I believe that each regeneration of the Doctor is almost a different person, and have different soul mates. For 10, it was Rose Tyler without a doubt. For 11, I think it was Amy Pond. It's so heartbreaking because the regenerations almost never last even as long as a human lifetime, and they always end up losing them.
I almost completely disagree, although I loved 11 and Amy, all the doctors brought something new to the table and I think it's just a matter of 'pick your favourite personality' and all the companions also have different personalities which give a certain uniqueness to all the companions. But I guess it also makes sure the series doesn't get too boring after viewers have watched the same faces for too long. (sorry for my essay looking comment. x )
i agree, though i understand why they did what they did as it was Karen’s decision to leave, had she not 11 and her would probably have gone through season 7 together too
watched The Angels Take Manhattan for the first time yesterday... Haven't cried that hard in a couple of months. Horrible, why do they have to do that to us??? I am so sad :(((
