Klaus Doldinger's Passport live at Montreux Jazz 1980 with guitarist Kevin Mulligan, keyboardist Hendrik Schaper, bassist Deiter Petereit and Don Ellis drummer David Crigger
have seen them live in 1978 for two times...was in a little german town called Gronau-Epe . there they were live in the Aula of Carl-Sonnenschein Realschule! They played in this small hall for only 300 persons! But they always give all !! fantastic musicians!!!
What an amazing group! They never toured in my country of Canada; Canada's loss! I have listened to them a million times on record, and always a great experience. Passport rules!
I was at that very concert (1980 Montreux) - the same night after Passport Van Morrison was next (with Pee Wee Ellis and Mark Isham as a horn section) - and then B.B.King with his large band. After his set B.B.King invited Doldinger, Ellis and Isham up for a long wild jam ..... quite a night ! Montreux always takes place in July for about 2 weeks+, the same year I also saw Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Stanley Clarke, and many more.... I went there every year from '80 - '88 until I moved to NYC.
I’d be willing to say your one of the luckiest people in the world to have seen this with your own eyes and heard it with your own years. This piece is otherworldly something that no human could have curated. Me and my friend listen to and watch this very often and talk about getting to see this live I’m so glad to see you post about it. God bless Klaus Doldinger and Passport. I have been doing my best to pass this on to the next generation as should all.
In 1976 or so my brother brought home an unreleased album by Passport. We loved it so much that the groves turned white from playing it so much. Kat from Katmandu was my favorite.
Passport were the greatest german jazz-rock/fusion band till the late 70ies when leader/composer K.Doldinger decided to take a more easy-listening/muzak path... Cross Collateral (1974) was their masterpiece and artistic culmination , any videos of that period would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for this wonderful post.
Timeless! Left Passport behind during international move 25 years ago, and I am right back there again! ...well, just for a few minutes anyway (don't have any of my original recordings!)
Eccezionale...non ho parole!!!Musica sublime che mira allo spazio e all'alto...è una ricerca del divino o Zeion!!!!enti astratti ridondanti permettono ai nostri sensi di subire effluvi di atomi!!!
I think they were the last great jazz/rock fusion band. Smooth jazz can be repetitive and tepid. Jazz/Rock was progressive and challenging i.e. Weather report,Return to Forever, Tony Williams, Mahavishnu. I'm a Black guy from Tennessee and I love Passport.
wowh... to relisten it after nearby 30 years gone still blows me away. So cool... Heavy guys all, groovy base, pushing drums, smoothy keybords with Hammond sound and flying away Sax. This clip let me feel old (28 years gone?? - Where ??), but the sound and melodies refresh heavily... Thank's PPFan, thank's Klaus & Compagnions.
the 70s was a GREAT time for jazz i personaly think the "fusion" music "revolution" is much like when be bop happened:the excitment and fresh ideas..... .....i am glad to have had it revealed to me. the people who condem are missing some GREAT music
NO LIE....I just heard "soul Town" on OCEANS 13, and it was the best thing since PINK FLOYD. So I went on the internet and apparently this Klaus Doldinger guy is quite famous. LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY.
Great song!!! I love Curt Cress’s playing on that…phenomenal cymbal work on those 70’s era Paiste cymbals. Great band!!! Klaus Doldinger is a fantastic player/composer. 87 years young and still playing great!!!
Fantastic soundtrack of Derrick "Solo für Margarete" ❤

The era of Passport with Kevin Mulligan passed too quickly. It's a joy to see this band with him playing, after all this time !!
i just liked seeing his Irish name stick out from the German ones.. lol

3.30 changed my life.
I picked up a copy of Garden of Eden at a clearance sale years ago for pennies. It was signed by Kevin Mulligan..... Now it's PRICELESS !.

I probably owned about six or seven of these guys albums... They had some great musical phrases to steal
One of best instrumental compositions from the 80s. Highly dynamic and still damn fresh.
Derrick: Solo für Margarethe. Tatort Essen: Schlussfahrt
This song sounds great with this live setting and lead guitar. Superb!
if only ppl today made stuff like this, for this is the artwork of a genius. GENIUS!!!
