Very interesting video! Like the Australian charts, the ones from New Zealand contained a mixture of songs from the US, Europe and local artists. Thanks so much for your work!
Thank you not just for this video, but ALL of the videos you produce. Thanks to your hard work and talent I have discovered a lot of songs I didn't know before, and now enjoy. Thank you VERY much from an former radio disc jockey and diehard pop music fan in the U.S.
It must have been that the Maoris and Pacific Islanders have mostly contributed to many rap songs hitting top ten and reaching number one. I believe that NZ Europeans and South Islanders had much different music taste they probably listen to British music and some Techno and Pop music but mo match for these rap songs domination on the 90s NZ charts
During the 90’s, I knew of one song that reached #1 in NZ. It was Candle in the Wind 1997 by Elton John. It prevented Spice Up Your Life by the Spice Girls from reaching #1 and peaked at #2.
I'd just lost my daughter to cot death. I hated that song - it was picking at a deep wound I was trying to let scab over. Even hearing it here made my blood boil and it's been 36 years..
HELLOOOO DJ FRANCIS FELICITACIONES MUY BUEN RANKIN DE 97 VRY GOOOOOOD THE SONG THANKS FOR SHARING VIVA LA MUSICA GRACIAS TOTALES 💃💃💃🤗🤗🤗🤗🎼🎧🎵🎶🎤👏👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
At 6:05 finally, a song that actually came from NZ, The Mutton Birds "The Heater". Lived in Auckland '92-'98 and saw them play a bunch of gigs back then. Then Supergroove, Headless Chickens, OMC, and there's a lesser-known Neil Finn tune as well. Otherwise it's mostly from US/UK/EU and overwhelmingly boy bands, synchronized dance divas and rappers stealing someone else's songs. No surprise that the truly best music almost never makes the pop charts.
It's funny how some classics didn´t reach the topspot (or didn't chart at all) in the US due to Billboard technicalities or shit but did it in NZ: Niravana's "Smells like teen spirit" Aaliyah's "Are you that somebody" Shania Twain's "That don't impress me much" Backstreet Boys "As long as you love me" Fugees "Killing him softly" No Doubt "Don't Speak".
I wouldn't say it was the greatest era of music, but it's a matter of taste I guess. It seemed to be the decade of the 're-make' - how many songs in there were re-recordings/remixes of older songs??
Didn't mind some of these, when will you do the whole chart of New Zealand in the 80's from 1980-89?? Also this was when Milli Vanilli had their own voice on there and they provedb efore this song from the media in studio they could sing so what was the point?? They signed contract with Frank Farian thinking they were going to be singing on it as he though their accents were too thick at that time-RUBBISH totally disagree with him!
Please mate, you keep getting the "Baby Come Back" song wrong (07:13). The song was by Pato Banton featuring Ali & Robin Campbell. The band UB40 were not on the song, only those 2 members and nowhere was UB40 credited on the song, it only says "of UB40" on the sleeve. Pato Banton was the lead artist on this track, the Campbells only sang backing on the chorus. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby,_Come_Back_(The_Equals_song)#Pato_Banton_featuring_Ali_and_Robin_Campbell_of_UB40_version
Funny, I listened to a lot of radio in the 90's and I properly never heard half these songs...as someone replied, in the South Island we had different taste in music and it didn't include hip hop, rap and "boy bands".

They like their cover versions! 🙂

New Zealanders sure loved them some 90's hip hop.

Is Fantastic!And very interesting!🎸🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶🌟
I was born in New Zealand on 1994 the music I grew up with
During the 90’s, I knew of one song that reached #1 in NZ. It was Candle in the Wind 1997 by Elton John. It prevented Spice Up Your Life by the Spice Girls from reaching #1 and peaked at #2.
🖐🖐🖐 Thankyou for sharing.....great decade great memories !! Smiling from ear to ear ❤❤❤NZ
Wow my childhood just flashing past my ears 👀👂
Lots of R&B and Boyzone.
One of the best list ever created and throughout I remember 90%of the songs from when I was little.
Thanks for the vid! I was a small kid when that Red Nose Day song was everywhere!

You tha man!!! Thankyou for the awesome video !!! Loved the lil kiwis inbetween the clips too

I kept waiting for it to get better. Now I remember why I gave up on radio.
Big fan of your #1 singles videos! I'd love to see a German #1 singles 2000-2009 list sometime.
Excelente compilación, Francis.
Thank you! From a proud Kiwi
I love Milli Vanilli!
Super! The bird in the Background is cool.
"the bird" - it's a Kiwi, the national symbol of New Zealand.
Oh I did wonder why Break My Stride sounded different. Anyway, prefer the late 90s as usual.
Good decision, Francis! And again - the 1st half of 1990's beats the 2nd by miles.....
If you're from New Zealand do you remember the missing number one singles of 1965 from the Lever Hit Parade?
It has just started and i AM shocked.... I always thought Escaping was a Dina Carroll original song 😁
Nope, it was originated by a New Zealand legend (R.I.P Margaret)

Was there a reason Daddy Cools Eagle Rock had a resurgence in popularity?
Because of a big tv ad I believe. Can’t remember the product it was selling…
Mariah has 8 number ones include all I want for Christmas

My Heart Will Go On peaked #34 at New Zealand... so Worse!
U2!!!
Most of 1996 was pretty good
Can you upload the video of the shu bird without the songs in front of it I want to see it it’s so shu
Also, wasnt Beth Hart "LA Song" a #1 hit in 1999?
It hit number one in February 2000
The 90s when crappy hip hop started to become popular. Love the 70s and 80s with all the great rock music
And all the boy/girl bands started becoming popular also, killing the actually decent pop music from the 80's

All these songs show how badly NZ radio was captured by crap formatting.
Cool to see, but what a lot of boring songs... Lot of Rap songs which I really don’t like.. I’m curious at their 80ties number ones though!
80's number ones = ua-cam.com/video/wadp5ZYsvyA/v-deo.html
moins de choses (folklorique) propre a la nouvelle Zélande ( je préfère la compil année 80 s , beaucoup plus originale )
New Zealanders sure do love crappy covers..
