Another thing that can affect your “curl pattern”: how much time you have to dedicate to your hair lol having a 6 month old and being in the winter in New England.. my 3a hair is a 2b right now. And that’s ok. I was freaking out for a bit thinking I was losing my curl pattern. But you know what? It changes. I don’t have the time to do the whole routine that would keep my hair curly in the winter, and that’s fine.
Thank you for this video! So many groups say “you need to curl type your hair with no product or styling” and I’m like..... my hair is poofy and not in much of a pattern if I don’t do anything to it?!
Literally the same for me. I can't just "not do anything" to it because then it just becomes poofy and hardly manageable meaning I have to brush it and that just makes all even worse
the truth is you don't need to type you hair at all. Really there are just 3 broad categories: those with gentle waves who find it hard to hold a curl for days; the big bunch of us in the middle with standard curly hair who've had a lifetime trying to manage the frizz and difficulty getting a good haircut; and the people with very tight coily or kinky hair and their main issue is dryness and fragility. Subtypes don't matter.
I SO agree with you! The more I learn the more I realize my hair type is the least beneficial bit of information that I have been using to help get my hair healthy!
I feel the same because being mixed with 3 races, one part is straight, another is tight curls, loose curls, big wavy curls. Overall I just get confused 🤷🏽♀️ but I agree with you 💯
On any given day, I have at least 3 different curl patterns. So much variation that I usually use different techniques on different parts of my head! And I TOTALLY agree about learning ingredients!! I obsessively Google ingredients, ingredient combos, etc.
2b-2c here 😆 But something you said about your curls in the winter has actually made me realise something. For months I've been trying to replicate my hair from a wash day back in August, but the autumn and winter here in Scotland are pretty cold compared to the summer, so if the weather has an effect on the way your curls go, then I won't be able to have the same results in January as I had in August 😯 Thanks for that comment and the visual as well!
From another “2c-3a” curly girl - Yes ma’am!!!! I always tell people to focus on their texture/density/porosity FIRST and only use the typing system to clarify their expectations of their results. Nothing. Further. Yet another fabulous video, Britt!! 💛
Love this. I'm a wavy and on any given day it is 2a to 2c, and usually a mix. Knowing that has never been real helpful. And with wavies there is a real sense of "do I really have curly hair" when we have 2a days, and it just seems like an arbitrary benchmark. I have curly hair when my hair is curly. 🤷🏼♀️ Ready to let go of the type conversation.

Good points made Brittany. I have to say that at the start of my journey all everyone seemed to talk about was curl patterns and I found it hard as I was a mixture of several depending where on my head you were looking. I think the thing that really helped my journey was not my curl type but just understanding the condition of my hair and what it needed. Whether it was dry and needed moisture or protein etc etc. Like you say the best way to find out is just to experiment and learn. I found It really helps if you can get small sample size bottles to try products , while you are learning, as this helps avoid lots of left over products as you experiment. I wish more companies did them. Thanks for the video.Your hair looks lovely.😀👍
I always feel like a damn unicorn because I have wavy hair but it's coarse, high density and low porosity. Lightweight wavy products do nothing for me.
You are not alone! I did hair for 20 years and had a lot of clients like you. I also have coarse, thick hair. It used to be wavy but is getting curlier with age. We exist! Just not many on UA-cam. Also, I often say using a lightweight product on coarse, thick hair is like trying to hold back the ocean with a dam made of tissue paper. Not. Gonna. Work!
Wait. This sounds like my hair. My hair is wavy! But some of these were the UA-camrs I follow just don’t work because I’m pretty sure I have course here. How do you know if you have coarse hair?
I’m Latina and my hair matches none of that or several of that depending on the day. I tried to follow the curly girl method and it was not working for me. Also I could barely afford some of the products. Then I heard “oh, you wash too much” and my hair felt super weird and it didn’t look healthy at all, but I was told “no, you need to do it for a long time because you hair needs to cleanse from all the chemicals you have been using. It needs to get bad before getting better”… I did it for over a year and my hair never got better, I even stopped using product altogether thinking that it would help. My hair got dry and would break up easily. This is to say, I went back to doing what I had been doing all my life. I started washing my hair every day, sometimes I don’t use shampoo and sometimes I deep condition, I went back to using my silicone products and guess what happened? My hair is back to being nice and wavy, sometimes curls show up here and there, but mostly… my hair is back to being healthy. I started following my hair needs instead of listening to people who has no idea what they are saying but still say it because they heard others say it and somehow it worked for them… not thinking that it might not work for everyone.
What I’ve noticed is that porosity and humidity are the 2 factors to determine what products will work. My little one has what ppl will say is 3a-b But she is low porosity. We live in the south where it’s almost always 80-90% humidity on a everyday basis. So silicones and humectants actually work on her. However my niece who lives in Arizona and she is high porosity and those products would cause her hair to be big and frizzy with humectants. So...... it all about the individual factors of ones hair and trial n error
I'm so glad you are talking about this! I was so confused about the importance of curl type when I first started my curly journey. And the girls in Facebook groups would be quick to correct you if they they thought you were wrong about your guess. 🙄 Also what you said that is never discussed is how your curl type will change and likely get tighter as you stop straightening. Another great video. 👍👍❤
Even though it has been 8 months since I started valuing my hair texture... I feel like I am still transitioning and have made many mistakes. I treated my hair bad nearly all 41 years of my life. I actually removed myself from many FB groups because of toxic responses to people (myself included) and what they perceived their curl types to be or where they could be in the end. This video is a breath of fresh air and I genuinely appreciate it.
I only know that I like the way you express yourself. I live (am from) in Spain and I buy products via amazon.es so the prices are pretty high that's why I only buy "good" shampoo, conditioner and leave-in to treat my wavy hair (which turns on curly at the bottom as days pass. Yep, multitextured here too). Oh, also, coconut oil the day before I wash my hair (cause I have it colored and I guess more damaged than a virgin one). I only scrunch my hair with a microfiber towel. So my care is pretty less complicated and I don't know the potential of my waves. What I know is that my hair doesn't like thick masks.
It looks like I'm blaming. I like my wild hair and although I know the best brands, I am happy to find out how my waves will behave each time I wash my hair. It's always a surprise ^^
I follow you because I think our curl type is similar, but you are mainly my inspo to keep going with my journey! My hair quality and the climate I live in is very different to yours so we haven't got that much else in common haha. Great video, thanks for spreading good info!
I find it interesting to know curl pattern because it’s interesting to see how different products and techniques affect how hair looks. I also follow several curly girls here on UA-cam because there is a difference of opinion on ingredients but there is also different curl patterns. And as I have both waves and curls any where from 2b to 3b I can’t watch just one person. I found out that I prefer combining different techniques rather than just using what one person does. Granted at this point I’ve only used techniques and a few recommended products as I tend to wait until I run out of a product before buying a new one. Also following multiple people means I get a more sources for information and one person might say something that just works when others either don’t explain it in a manner that clicks for me or they didn’t think to approach that topic. So I tend to follow multiple people for a variety of things, hair care and skin care especially.
Hair length (weight) affects curl patterns, too. My hair was 3b/3c.....now that it's waist length, my curls have stretched from the weight of the length and are now a mix of 2c/3a. I care more about my hair health than I do about the actual tightness of my curl pattern.
I'm thinking of going to the barber and getting the big chop to let my natural hair grow, but yeah due to chemicals such as relaxers,, i really can't tell what my hair type is. but I do see healthy hair growth close to my scalp.
I love this 💕 I didn’t think that curl typing was important to begin with and I still don’t. I’m mostly 2c/3a but all of my waves/curls spiral when wet and then gets somewhat stretched out while dry. My hair doesn’t look anything like yours 🙈
I think there is still some merit to having a curl typing system, even if this one was created as a marketing tool. Being able to have extremely straight hair (which is often not white people’s hair) on the same spectrum as kinky curls is odd and flawed in just the 4 tier system. However, being able to distinguish curl types is useful. While I would take advice from you, someone with 4c hair might value the distinction to find more particular suggestions. Not all curls are the same is what I’m trying to say, so having some words to distinguish them (maybe waves, spirals, coils, etc) is still important (in my opinion).
Yep I’ve found the biggest factor has been whether someone dyes their hair or not. I was trying to follow all of these girls with balayage and ombré and highlights because their curl pattern looked similar to mine. Took a while to realize their hair needs things that mine just doesn’t, I appreciate product recommendations from people with their natural hair colour like me! Took me months...maybe a year to realize that lol
Yes. FB curly groups are full of women stressing about their curl types and spending vast amounts of money buying overpriced cult products when what they really need to be doing is STOP BLEACHING THEIR HAIR. Part of the problem is that Lorraine Massey continues to advocate permanent dyes and bleached highlights because she is a HAIRDRESSER not a trichologist and that's how she makes her living.
I normally say that it's a 2C/3A, because my hair it's between tight waves and loose curls But like, the right side of my hair forms ringlets, but the left side forms tight waves (and some loose waves, not common, but it happens), so I feel that I can't make a decision when my hair is so divided (literally) about it...I'm literally running on trial and error, because my hair just doesn't behave like someone else with a similar pattern, I watch videos from all the patterns, and try things from everyone Also, everyone has a different perception of how a type looks, I watched a video of Lana Summer where she was talking about a tiktok that she made, and a lot of comments were telling her that she doesn't have curly hair, that her hair is at most a 2B, and I was in there like "if her hair it's a 2B, my hair it's freaking straight"
How funny! My right side also tends to form ringlets, and on day 2 those singlets actually tighten even further, while my left side which has looser "loopy" curls can sometimes fall a bit on day 2, bordering on waves. I sometimes try to flip my part the other way, so I can bring some ringlets from the right to blend with the waves on the left, just to be more balanced and not look like I maybe only styled one side of my head lol. But my hair is stubborn and I can't always flip my part when WET, let alone dry.
i´ve been on thi "journey" for more than 3 years, i thought i had everything mastered but no haha my hair has been acting up for the past 6 months and honestly i dont know what else to do its really frustrating because i was so used to seeing my 3a-3b hair flourish and know its kinda 2b maybe? idk i just give up lol it´s been in a bun most the time
Might be the water in my country they added more products into the water of cities and even small villages, my hair have also been acting up like crazy, since the beginning of the pandemic for me they were wonderful and suddenly a mess, something like two weeks after the beginning of quarantine they began to slightly get strange and looser until complete mess.
I get a different 'type' depending on which chart of photos or drawings I look at - I also have a combo of 2c and 3a. Lorraine Massey doesn't use the Andre Walker system anyway, she made up her own 7 types. Either you have curly hair or you don't and it's no hidden secret that you didn't know you had. CGM facebook groups get too many people with straight hair thinking that cgm is a way to make straight hair curly. Confusion over typing is causing way too much unnecessary anxiety. It is also causing a weird kind of competition.
If you want to know which curl type you have, it's best to determine when the hair is not styled. Just washed and dried. Because with styling you get different results with different techniques. I think, knowing your curl type can be useful, because wavy hair is more easily weighed down in comparison to type 3 or 4 curls👀
I wouldnt say thats accurate, either. My hair is far more wavy when unstyled - I don’t think anyone would classify my hair as being mostly wavy. Moreover, there are plenty of curlies with super thick, coarse wavy hair that *doesnt* get weighed down when using lightweight products. While yes, it can be a good general guideline, my curly journey would have been the same without it
@@brittcurls Okay, now I'm very curious about your unstyled, airdried hair haha🤭 My hair is barely wavy, but does not even come close to your curl pattern when I style my hair😬
Hahah! What an awesome video! Why do we need permission to experiment? It’s the fun part! It’s so true. Most product curries have recommended just weren’t the holy grail for me. Play with your hair, products and application techniques
My curl type is actually 2c-3a, really! 🤣I’ve been following the CGM for years. My first products were Vo5 Strawberries & Cream conditioner, Suave Naturals Coconut conditioner, and LaLooks hard hold gel (which I still use btw). My first influencer was Sarah aka Waterlily on UA-cam. And now I follow anyone who talks curls! 😂 Adding you to my list.❤️❤️
2c to 3a because I have dye damaged it is transitioning from mostly 2c now going to to 3a. I'm new and still learning about my hair mine love hydration but not too much protein.
I still think in our head we're going to type ourselves and each other. When my kids were in grammar School in the '90s they came up with changing the grading system( it was short lived) from A to F, to C-A-N = consistent, at times and not yet. In our minds we went with: okay so C means A, A means B-C N means D-F I agree that it's not cut and dried, so to speak, when it comes to hair types but it is certainly a reference point.
0:08 i think you're supposed to type yourself based on what your hair does when you don't use any styling methods and re: people saying they don't have any typeable curls/waves when they don't use styling methods, it's just a "frizzy mess": you probably do, they're just harder to identify visually, but if you take a single curl and hold it up you can tell. if there's legitimately no curls/waves when you don't style then you're either doing something that is technically styling because it morphs the curl pattern (blow-drying/diffusing improperly, combing while damp or dry, towel-drying) or you're just not curly/wavy
I am 2b-3c 🤪. I started following you because I was learning how to use the denman and your side to side styling really helped. I just love your content. I have thick, dense hair and my guess is you may have finer hair than me just based on when yours is wet (I may be wayyyy off). Regardless...I watch you every week!
Another problem is if you’ve started CG (or similar) not too long ago. Your hair is still changing - I only started last month and it’s getting curlier by the week! So I could identify my hair as a 2b, but that probably isn’t its true curl type. So I don’t pay attention to what I think my curl type is. I have no idea what it is and I don’t really want to know!
I'm a Caucasian Woman with mostly 3C (very damaged) hair...I honestly haven't run into another person without recent African ancestry with my curl pattern in real life, but would love to know if there's any content creators with similar hair to me? Also my hair hates Coconut & Olive oil, seems to like Argan oil & dare I say it Silicones. Any advice?
My hair is wavy and fine (and long, past my butt). It hates coconut and olive oil but likes grapeseed, argan, avocado, almond, and jojoba oil as well as super coney conditioners. I can't put cones on my scalp (itchy), but my length seems to really like them. I have a different hair texture than you but I have dealt with a lot of damage and a lot of dealing with that is just being gentle and patient. Gentle products (or harsh products isolated to the scalp), gentle handling, protective styling, protecting hair at night, regular conditioning treatments, and living healthy in general all really helped me. I also have some white friends and relatives with very tight curls who don't have recent African ancestry. But I don't see any reason you couldn't look at black content creators for haircare advice. I like to watch the Deeper than Hair channel because she has a very soothing voice, but her advice and product recommendations may be more useful to you.
You have literally changed my curls they are some much better than before you I started watching you . My curl typed is everything from a 2b- 4c. Thank you for all of your advise . My hair loves protein too .

You are the voice of reason...terrific:)
How did I just find your channel yesterday?! So happy I did 🥰 my curls are similar to yours
i'm also 2c to 3a but it too me a long time to find that out because i was confused which one i was some days my curls were looser other tighter.
I normally say that it's a 2C/3A, because my hair it's between tight waves and loose curls
But like, the right side of my hair forms ringlets, but the left side forms tight waves (and some loose waves, not common, but it happens), so I feel that I can't make a decision when my hair is so divided (literally) about it...I'm literally running on trial and error, because my hair just doesn't behave like someone else with a similar pattern, I watch videos from all the patterns, and try things from everyone
Also, everyone has a different perception of how a type looks, I watched a video of Lana Summer where she was talking about a tiktok that she made, and a lot of comments were telling her that she doesn't have curly hair, that her hair is at most a 2B, and I was in there like "if her hair it's a 2B, my hair it's freaking straight"
@@VengefulAngeI It's always nice to found someone else who get's the struggle 🤣🤣
i´ve been on thi "journey" for more than 3 years, i thought i had everything mastered but no haha my hair has been acting up for the past 6 months and honestly i dont know what else to do its really frustrating because i was so used to seeing my 3a-3b hair flourish and know its kinda 2b maybe? idk i just give up lol it´s been in a bun most the time
Might be the water in my country they added more products into the water of cities and even small villages, my hair have also been acting up like crazy, since the beginning of the pandemic for me they were wonderful and suddenly a mess, something like two weeks after the beginning of quarantine they began to slightly get strange and looser until complete mess.
so informative!
Hi Alexa!! I keep finding your comments everywhere 🤣
*Great video!* I don't know my curl type, but I can post a picture on Facebook and have a thousand people tell me their thoughts on it! 🤣
LOL!
In our minds we went with: okay so C means A,
A means B-C
N means D-F
I agree that it's not cut and dried, so to speak, when it comes to hair types but it is certainly a reference point.
Please 30 seconds in and she's already busted the concept of curl labeling
0:08 i think you're supposed to type yourself based on what your hair does when you don't use any styling methods
and re: people saying they don't have any typeable curls/waves when they don't use styling methods, it's just a "frizzy mess": you probably do, they're just harder to identify visually, but if you take a single curl and hold it up you can tell. if there's legitimately no curls/waves when you don't style then you're either doing something that is technically styling because it morphs the curl pattern (blow-drying/diffusing improperly, combing while damp or dry, towel-drying) or you're just not curly/wavy
Yes, I would definitely like to get away from that chart.
Any advice?
Have you checked out Manes by Mell? They have two different patterns. Her sister is not as curly but I think hers may be like yours
I JUST STARTED THE VIDEO BUT FUCKING SAME
My curls and waves. Are all different
Is she still active on yt?
You have literally changed my curls they are some much better than before you I started watching you . My curl typed is everything from a 2b- 4c. Thank you for all of your advise . My hair loves protein too .
Hi I‘m new. First question: Why don’t you have more subscribers? 😍
Hi Britt... NEW SUBSCRIBER... 53 YO post menopausal... can we be friends? LOL... I don't have to do too much to get my curls... can be very wavy to very curly pretty easily (mostly wear it straight though with a LOT of work)... am wanting to "simplify" my hair routine (I have mid back length hair... LOTS of "thinning" since losing 70 lbs and menopause)... have been binging your vids and just LOVE your philosophy and techniques... THANK YOU for THIS particular video... I like a "rebel"... and someone who is not going to "follow the crowd" if ya know what I mean... anyway... rambling... going to try out some of the methods and products (i still can't quite understand plopping)... here's to trying right? :o) xo
Very good points in this video. I think my curl type is 2B - 3A...yip, multiple patterns.
I think I'm a 2A. Yap. Don't know why I'm here, I'd probably better straighten my hair -.-
I'm 1c/2a. I call my hair disobedient. It's never really straight but styled waves don't stick around.

Is usefull, instead, talk about porosity and density? This parameters can be more interesting?
