- This garden in Canada video looks at how to heat a greenhouse in a cold climate. It also looks at the other aspects you need to consider when using a greenhouse. We will go over whether or not you need to use additional lighting in your greenhouse. All the way to hotter water properly inside of your greenhouse with the smaller containers.

I am FINALLY outside. The ground is still frozen but at least I can start organizing the yard after the winter destruction.
It helps to insulate the lower outside walls of GReenhouse to retain heat. Maybe not south side. I do North and west side. Early in the season I also divide my Greenhouse in half using Greenhouse plastic or even clear shower curtains. This is so I’m only heating half my GReenhouse until I either need the whole thing for plants or until night time temps are warm enough.
For best results, extend the perimeter insulation a couple of feet down into the ground

My hubby put this one together. You should get one of those plastic ones, my grandma used one for years and it was very simple to setup, light weight, everything.
Nova Scotia 6b way down on the south coast here. Garlic is up 4”. Planted out kale, lettuce and multi sown beets, white turnips and direct seeded broad beans and peas

have you ever thought about a thermostat for the heater over night? before i moved to florida i used a digital thermostat plug for the heaters, much more reliable than the built in on heaters, specifically space heaters

I've been clamping down on our plastics use too. It's an effort.
On the Joe Gardener podcast, it was mentioned that reducing the day/night temperature differential with make stocking tomato plants and decrease the internodal distance.

Interesting information on temperature differential. I think that temperature differential was one of my problems during the winter. I had poor heating which caused big swings in temperature from day to night. I didn't expect so much useful information in this greenhouse video. Spectacularly insightful content, as usual!
I finally got one loofah to root so far out of 15 attempts. I wasn’t snipping off the seed shell and got aggressive with one and it’s the one that sprouted and 🤞is still going. Thank you for informing me

I love your greenhouse! So exciting that you have that space to use right now in April😍 Hopefully one day I can have one of my own. Also that Max-Min thermometer is genius! Really interesting when you talk about how lower (P) is ideal when fertilizing seedlings as it’s true they don’t require it nearly as much as (N) or (K) at this early stage and too much of it imbalances their nutrient intake. You have reminded me to be more mindful of which fertilizer to use for seedlings and to know when in the growth cycle is a time to switch to a balanced or a higher (P) one👌🏻

FYI-that looks exactly like one of my greenhouses, a 6*8ft that I paid 580ish for from home depot. It's on its 3rd year and it is a fantastic affordable unit. Strap it down well if you get wind because the whole thing will up and land in Oz if you don't. I actually purchased another just like it only it's a 10*20ft.

It was 80F in western MN yesterday- absolutely unheard of for April- last year still had a foot or more of snow- what can I say, I love El Ninos in the North! Unfortunately La Nina is coming back in the summer
I just prepped my greenhouse today. Don't have any heat, but I may consider heating it.
PS. I learned some more about the NPK fertilizer info on keeping the P lower then the K. with the reason why. Thank you for this. Now to adjust my seed starting fertilizer routine.

It's far too small to fit a heater or a grow light though, so I just keep mine inside right against a south-facing patio door. I'm planning to bring it out of the house once the risk of frost is completely gone.

Would you mind recommending it tho? I’m rocking a 200$ plastic tarp greenhouse from Amazon. It’s certainly great for what I paid, it’s HUGE. But there’s not good sealing for the winter time and this thing will eventually deteriorate in the sun, I’m sure. But I can’t afford a $2k greenhouse so would love to know how this works for you in a few months.

Just read an AP gardening article by Jessica Damiano, based in NY. JD suggests applying mulch in late may when soil has warmed up. Else, mulch will trap cool temp in soil, and prevent roots from awakening. This concern is new to me. What are your thoughts on when to apply mulch? I’m in 6b.

don't know what you're hunting for but i have some rather tropical house plants that survived the cold in my green house but tthe neighbor said they looked sun burned. the leaves turned a shade of red. i know it's not sun burned because they were on the shay end of the house with the aloe vera that also got the red tinged leaves from being just a little too cold durring the winter blast back in january. (i don't want to heat my greenhouse with electric heat again. the elec bill is dificult to pay after that effort) hopeing to find a different way to heat...
Is it a natural red? or something that looks off? it could just a a normal colouring because of extra light.
Do you happen to have a magidome video, or even just one that shows how you used the space inside it? I *almost* purchased a kit this spring, but I'm torn. I feel like the building takes up a rather large footprint compared to the actual usable space inside it.
Yes that’s correct lol. That’s why I just went for straight sides my dome I essentially lifted it into a box frame but still too awkward.
What are your thoughts on sunken greenhouses in cold climates? Do they have any benefit over a traditional greenhouse build at ground level?
I am in Northern BC and we can have some long winters. I don't intend to grow in my greenhouse year round but would love to be able to extend my season for warm weather crops.
If I did down for my greenhouse, I can use that soil in raised bed outside the greenhouse! (Raised beds to keep dogs out of the garden)

I’m guessing you got the outsunny greenhouse. I was debating the Canopia. What made you pick the one you did? I have the 4x6 poly greenhouse with the green metal frame but the cover is toast now.

I have a small greenhouse like the second one you had. For heat I use an old crock pot but what can I do about condensation?? I have a heater like you have but it sucks the electric and raised my power bill a LOT!!
Condensation the only solution is opening things up, fan to move air and keeping the water off the floor.
I'm looking for an offgrid way to heat a greenhouse? Any suggests? I saw someone use a fish tank heater in a large metal drum of water to radiate heat, but wonder about condensation.

Hi neighbor,from Alberta zone 3 as well. Firstly your videos are all amazing and very helpful. What do know about hydroponics? As far as fertilizing the water, so much confusion with A and B fertilizers. My husband is building me horizontal one as the tower one take too much space. I’m mainly doing lettuce and herbs as I’ve given up my battle with aphids out here. Thanks for your knowledge or giving me some sort of direction

If you are just growing leafy greens and herbs, the easiest option is to use General Hydroponic MaxiGro. Its a dry one part nutrient that costs around $20 a kilo. Mix at 4.3g per gallon of water, use half strength for young plants. Adjust ph to 5.8-6.0 and you are good to go :)
I have a question. What is your average summer night temperature in Saskatoon. Here in Red Deer our night temperatures are seldom above 10°c
We are around 8-9 but keep in mind it’s just the temp that’s around the plants that matter. So higher planting density, covers, mulches all help warm up the space in the immediate vicinity.
In Canada you will never get this perfect unfortunately and that’s why commercially we use greenhouses. But good rule of thumb is above 10
What are the benefits/differences with having a greenhouse to start plants vs starting them indoors?
Not here long enough so not sure if you covered GDD. Still looking for a good tracker of that, since I'm lazy and don't want to do the record keeping :D

i had shelves too close causing shading issues. that with two weeks of rain and clouds caused my peppers to grow high fast - a little leggy too. can they be planted deep like tomatoes?

Some aren’t too big but some are huge. They are in 16 oz cups. The bigger ones are 15-20 inches not counting the cup
Previous years, the only peppers I grew were bell peppers. They took long to germinate and just as long to grow. So this year I started them earlier. but I also included other varieties that germinated fast and grew faster.
I'm about to start my garden, but we need to put up fences against cows and deer. It's at least $500 just to fence a 50x50 foot garden 😭
