    YOU, Sir, are a lifesaver! I was having MIDI issues with my K1, signals getting crossed when multiple keys were pressed. Someone online suggested replacing the internal battery with a new one, which I did along with a battery holder... and all my sounds were lost. This was a year ago or thereabouts, which meant I had a dead board since I couldn't even use it as a controller. THIS WEEK I discovered the problem wasn't the MIDI interface, and wasn't the K1, it was a combination of both... so I swapped interfaces. I'd tried using MIDI-OX before with no luck, but your video outlining all the settings made it all work. Yay! Thank you!

      Hi Greg, I also lost all the internal patches. So I downloaded them from www.kawaius.com/Downloads/download_archive-2.html but am having trouble transferring them. Midi-Ox says it sent OK and the K1 midi indicator square flashes but alas, no patches. What settings did you use on your K1? (rcv channel, omni, etc) Thanks

      It's been a while (7 months according to UA-cam), but I used the exact settings the OP used. I don't even remember the steps at this point! :) As a side note, they didn't get retained by the K1 after I unplugged it, so the battery doesn't seem to work.

    Finally, I was able to upload the patches! It all depends on the sysex configuration. For communication to work properly, huge delays are needed. You should make adjustments until the left upper square flash when sending patches, it means correct reception by the device, which is crucial! In my case, Low level input buffers: Size 1024 Num 32 ... Low level output buffers: Size 2 Num 2 ... delays both 200ms, Higher values stopped the transmission. Give me information if for someone it was helpful. Greetings from Poland.

      that's awesome, glad you got it all working. My older K1 I used to have to mess with the buffer settings to get it to work, but my current K1r it works with the default settings. I'm not exactly sure why.

      @@demonicsweaters Maybe they did some improvements, my old K1 demand sending byte after byte with pauses. I don't think the problem was the interface or the computer with the program. I connected the oscilloscope to the input and the transmission was always visible at each buffer setting. Anyway i think that it might be a clue , extremely slowlest possible transmision to the keyboard. Entire upload takes about 10min but it works.

    I really wish there was a decent patch librarian for this to make it a bit easier. I can transfer bulk patch banks but I'd really like to be able to send a single patch, listen, save it if I like it, and repeat - essentially having all the presets I want saved onto it. MIDIQuest has a librarian/editor but they can fuck right off with the price they are asking.

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  7 років тому

      You can send a single patch with midiox. It has to do with the type of sysex data you send. I don't have my K1 anymore, but I used to do this all the time. You need to look at the K1 Manual to see which position in the hex file designates patch only. I would keep tons of files just in a folder then transfer them to my K1 when I wanted them.

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  7 років тому +1

      If you scroll to the bottom of this manual, all the sysex detailswww.kawaius-tsd.com/OM/K_SYNTH/K1WAVE~1.PDF look for the ones that say "one single data" and "one multi data"

  • @jaygeedeepbro
    @jaygeedeepbro Рік тому

    The hexidecimal thing for where you are sending the patch is a little different than how you explain it in the video:
    A1-A8 is 00-07
    B1-B2 is 08-09
    B3-B8 is 0A-0F
    C1-C8 is 10-17
    D1-D2 is 18-19
    D3-D8 is 1A-1F
    Haven’t looked at the hexidecimal system for the lower case single banks or the multi patches yet but hope this helps!

      there should be a way. I don't have a modern Mac to try it with, but I'm told that Wine will run on the newest Mac OS, and if it does you should be able to run midi-ox in Wine on mac, since it works fine in Linux. Or another option would be to find a program the runs natively on OSX that can send and receive sysex data. Something like this should do the trick www.macupdate.com/app/mac/28692/sysex-librarian

Can you just use this for data transfer to the synth, no midi interface or expanded soundcard or anything?. If so is there a particular input on the computer you use or just any usb slot. +mathew smith yeah well the USB to midi cable is actually a midi interface. All computers have midi support, Linux, Mac, and Windows. Just make sure the cable is compatible with your OS. Most of them out there will work in Linux and Windows. Mac can be a little more picky.

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  9 років тому

      Yeah, that's exactly what I did with the K1, I got this patch bank from ebay and was successfully able to transfer them with MIDI Ox. As long as the O1Wfd can receive sysex data, you should be able to do it. I would start out with the same buffer settings I suggested for the K1, since the 01W is from around the same time period. But you're going to need to find the midi specifications in the manual to determine the specific info you would need to change to write to certain patch banks etc... It should be totally possible though.

I have to do this otherwise the data does not all get through to the K1 successfully, e.g. some patches or even whole banks can be missing. @@jaygeedeepbro Without going into my studio and checking, I forget exactly which way around it is. You will not do any harm by trying both ways though, you either get a successful syx exc dump or not. Other than that just make sure you are sending and receiving on the same MIDI channel in the K1 and computer interface settings.
      Another method that is easy, is to convert the syx files into MIDI files and then import, open and play in your DAW sequencer to your Kawai K1. Make sure to keep the song tempo slow, e.g. 80 bpm to avoid any data loss. I looked just now and saw a simple free software program to do this, callled Sysex to Text which does three different formats.

    Greetings. You are pretty well trained on this stuff. I just loaded some 3rd party sounds with midi ox to my K1m and need the original sounds but cant find them. Is there a link for them somewhere?
    Appreciate and help.

      No, sysex doesn't work that way. It stands for System Exclusive. This means that only data from the specific device will work.

    My battery died. I tried this solution step by step as you said and still have only PC-SPEAKER like sounds. I'm sending syx - progress bar increases - and nothing is changed. I have Ebay style interface too . I think is working ok - i can see .pressed keyboard buttons on my notebook screen.
    Besides, i still don't know what is this "syx" file? Is this some kind of RAW data or only configuration file?
    I tried to download data from synthesizer - all instruments have lenght of 7 bytes...
    I don't know what to do next.

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  10 років тому

      okay, well it sounds like the interface is working. Did you go in and change the buffer settings in midi ox like I said in the video? Also, there is a setting within the K1 that I forgot to mention that enables it to receive midi data. Look at the manual in the midi chapter around page 40 www.vintagesynth.com/manuals/K1Synth.pdf to see how to enable it to receive data. Sysex stands for "system exclusive data" and can be any type of data the synth contains. Some synths can send patches, banks and settings all via sysex, the k1 can send and receive pretty much everything, you just change what is actually being sent by the different numbers entered in the hex values. All of that info is in the wave list that is linked in the description. Don't give up on it, you're close it sounds!

      +demonic sweaters I'm confusing after 1000 times triying to upload something. Maybe i'm doing some stupid mistake or it's hardware failure. Comunications works well in both ways and nothing is changed. Hmmm... Greeting from Poland.

    Great tip, do you know how to send midi files/sequences (not sysex) with midiox? I have a Roland MC-307 that needs an OS upgrade.

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  9 років тому +1

      Diablo Roberto, well if you're trying to upgrade the OS, it would most likely be with sysex, not a midi sequence. MIDI OX does not send Sequences. You would need just a regular MIDI sequencer for that.

    I just want to add that I live in England (UK) and my K1r rack module came with a totally different factory preset list, to the one on the Kawai USA website. It has taken me a couple of years to hunt down and find the right presets for my UK / EU model.
    Anyone interested in downloading this can find it here; the file is named "1308.syx" - www.sysexdb.com/synth_detail.aspx?dv=39
    The cardboard preset list that came with mine looks like this - i1258.photobucket.com/albums/ii524/Ego_Shredder/Kawai%20K1r/Kawai%20K1%20-%20Presets%20web_zpslyhtyfjw.jpg
    A word of warning; I also use MIDI-OX and it works perfectly, BUT I had to adjust the Sys Exc input and output buffer sizes to 1024 and 128 (the default is 256 and 32); I also doubled the output timing buffers to 120ms (default is 60). I have to do this otherwise the data does not all get through to the K1 successfully, e.g. some patches or even whole banks can be missing.

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  7 років тому

      oh really? I didn't know that about the UK version. Pretty cool! I mention in the vid as well about changing the buffer sizes too. I had to change mine as well.

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder 7 років тому

      Ooops I somehow missed that in your video, probably due to watching different browser tabs at the same time! (bad habit). When I did this I kept increasing the buffers until it finally worked. The default settings caused an entire bank to not be received. The settings you used still caused a few individual presets to not get through. Finally the buffer sizes I used worked.

      I wonder if it may also have something to do with the computer and midi interface used? Also, maybe there's a speed difference between the K1 and the K1ii, m, r, etc... just speculating here, but it could be. The settings in my vid always seemed to work for me. I don't have my k1s anymore unfortunately, but have been building a pretty great K1 soundfont which you can hear in a couple of my latest vids.

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder 7 років тому

      The K1 is of the generation of MIDI that was much slower CPU-wise. My computer interface is the best on the market, the Edirol UM-880 which keep rising in price on Ebay every year, although they were discontinued in 2003 I think. I've also got a Roland Super MPU64 and my main audio interface is an Roland UA-101.
      My music computer is an IBM Thinkpad Z61p (Core2 Duo T7600, 3GB RAM, 500GB SSD, Win XP Pro x86). I deliberately got a Thinkpad because they wipe the floor with any other brand and equivalent spec model, and are more compatible, trouble free and customisable. I run a 50 / 50 split of rackmount hardware and VST plugins, and most of the rack has a VST type GUI interface inside Cubase, using Yamaha Studio Connections.

      I'll have to check out your K1 soundfont sample banks! Sampling is something I never bothered to get into, although I once tried to use an automated solution called SampleRobot made by Skylife I think. Even though I used a really simple synth to clone, it just did not sound or play right so it obviously needed a lot more user input or something.

    Can anyone confirm that first letter should blink while receiving sysex? My K1 can receive command (playing on keyboard) from PC and then first letter becoming black. But when i try to receive sysex nothing is happening on the display. K1 it seems to ignore ONLY sysex files??? What the hell is going on? I see that i'm not the one and only with that issue.
