Yeah, that's his biggest assets as a mangaka, the ability to go with the flow and make it look like he had It all planned out. Remember, this is serializes storytelling, and it must be able to last as long as there's interest in the story.

Sounds more like Elbaph was originally planned, Oda ended up taking longer than he expected and thought of writing around it but ultimately changed his mind and went with the original plan. It was mentioned too often to not go there and every time one of the crew said they wanted to go to a specific place they have gone there baring Raftel and the All blue for obvious reasons, one being the end destination and the other not being confirmed to even exist.

It's impossible to create videos with this amount of editing with this much quantity of videos released WITHOUT having a team or hired at least one editor for. Generally a one man team on UA-cam that uploads regularly, have low amounts of edits, not much production value involved or they're vlogging.

This stuff always makes me thing that Oda doesn't just plan every arc he will begin, but plans how to tie that arc directly with the final arc in case for whatever reason the Shonen Jump gives him a deadline so the story in any case will receive a proper end
I like to think when planning arcs he would ask himself "What would Luffy Do?" And knowing his own characters well he'd know Luffy wouldn't pass up Elbaph and so Oda is like "OK you heard the man, let's make and Elbaph arc"

Oda had the storyboard for onepiece mapped out before he started drawing it, he's added to it and changed it, but he's had everything he knew he NEEDED for his story already planned out, even with these changes he makes it fit because he knows the connecting threads he has to attach

I'll have to disagree. That guy and that guy fighting 100% happened. Oda was referring to huge battles that happened in Egghead. Law vs Blackbeard, Shanks vs Kid, Kuzan vs Garp etc. Same with the Lurking Legend. He was 100% referring to Imu. BTW. Even if Oda didn't plan to have an Elbaf arc, that doesn't mean he didn't have plan for giants and Loki. He might just put any plot points that concern them within the Elbaf arc now.
You’re giving Oda’s planning too much credit. I’m not saying he’s not a master planner cause he’s definitely planned a lot of stuff way ahead. It there’s almost equally many things he’s had to improvise, sometimes almost at the spot. Some examples: The 11 Supernovas, The Seven Warlords, Vivi (I think 🤔). This isn’t a bad thing per say, I was reading a thread on Reddit discussing how much they think is planned and how much they think is improvised and the most answers that o agreed with are those that said thing along with him planning enough ahead and then leaving gaps to be able to go back and change stuff or fill in stuff he hasn’t decided on yet. Sorry for messy comment but basically I think he plans most but leaves maybe 10-20% up for improv in case he feels like he would like to either change stuff as he goes along or change stuff later on.

I think Nami and Zoro's backstory were pretty much left on the cutting room floor. Hers was supposed to be linked in a movie, it was confirmed. Everyone was anticipating Zoro's during Wano, and there are a few glimpses of a potential of one, but it never got realized. Makes me think that Oda just decided to scrap it. He did have a good reason for it (at least when explaining Nami's) as it didn't really serve any purpose for the larger story he was telling. I wonder what else he could've potentially left as well tho.

I see the "free for all fight" message fulfilled in Egghead because we had often pairings like Kid vs. Shanks, Law vs. Blackbeard, Garp vs. Aokiji, Blackbeard vs. Boa vs. Koby and so on in this arc. And I personally think that Loki looks like his silhouette in his devil fruit form.

I could see Elbaf not being planned contributing to some of the consistency errors in that one chapter. He might have still been working shopping character designs up to the last minute and didn't have enough time to go through everything and clean it up properly.

But,from the point of view of the Straw Hats, they didn’t choose to go to Elbaph to accomplish a specific goal. They went there because Dorry and Brogy invited them and they wanted to visit. Ever since Law left the alliance, we are pretty much going with the flow. Only Robin has a goal : go see Saul, which she learned was still alive two weeks ago I believe.
That's what I think too. The recent leaks for the upcoming chapter hint at more Shanks lore, so it wouldn't surprise me that Oda is using Elbath to spread out more of the vital backstory of the world before hitting into high gear for the big finale.

To play devil's advocate: - Oda is always wrong about how long it'll take to complete the series, so using that as a measurement of how much we have left is a bit iffy at best - Oda's quote isn't necessarily saying that "Elbaph wasn't planned at all". The way I interpret it, he could also be saying "Is there a way to skip the island but conjoin the plot elements elsewhere instead?", which feels like a way to cut corners while still having what was required for the story. Sort of like a back up plan to try and save time if he could. Ultimately, that idea was scrapped and he went through with Elbaph anyways, but there's some room to doubt that it wasn't at all planned.
This situation with Elbaf not being planned reminds me of the late Akira Toriyama and him not planning for there to be a Cell Saga or even Androids 16, 17, & 18! If you read the English localisation of the chapter from the Trunks Saga where Future Trunks reveals the identity of the Android that will appear in three years, as 19 & 20! This is not a mistake by the localisation team but a lingering plot hole from the original Japanese manga! Originally, Toriyama had planned on 19 & and 20, being the Androids that Future Trunks was warning everyone about instead of 17 & 18! However, his editor was critical of their designs, and thus, Toriyama created 17 & and 18, adding 16 for some added mystery and eventually creating Cell cause his editor was still not happy! This means the Cell Saga and even Krillin's relationship with 18 wasn't originally planned by Toriyama!

I think "that guy vs that guy" was oda saying there was gonna be a lot of fights going on (black beard pirates vs garp and kobys group on hachinosu, and sabo vs imu and the elders on mariejois, black beard vs law on winners island, and shanks vs kidd on elbaf)
Oimo and Kashi arent exactly a plothole. What could have happened is they thought "yknow while we're over here in this half of the sea, lets go make sure the captains are ACTUALLY alive." (an excuse for wanting to see them after 100 years) and proceeded to check up on the captains. From there, any number of things couldve happened, and the plot hole is gone. They likely still fought, and they might have heard about what happened with loki and paused the duel went to go secure their homeland. From there, they met up with shanks and learned about luffy's whereabouts.
Well that guy and that guy could be so many things. Luffy against the Gorosei to free Vegapunk from his government slavery. Marines against BB to free luffy's wife. Garp versus BB crew and his old pupil to free his new pupil. There is a lot of that guy vs that guy in one piece recently and just before Elbaph.
He probably went back on it with how asked for elbaph is. Ever since dori and broggi appeared its been anticipated I feel like. We just hit a bunch of plot points in the way. I suspect it's has a rough draft of plot points on how to get to the final arc of the story rather than having it all thought out how its supposed to be.
I don't think the Oimo and Kashii thing is much of a plothole at all. They could have gone to Elbaf and then later decided to visit Little Garden, they might have even already been on the way there when that cover page with the newspaper happened
You don't think THAT guy was covered in Egghead? There were so many faceoffs on and off of the island, and we saw established characters fighting based on recent events, and the matches were welcome surprises. That's how I've interpreted Oda's tease for the future you mentioned.
I noticed how Liam keeps saying the “that guy vs that guy” fight never happened, when I feel like law vs Black Beard, Kidd vs Shanks, and ESPECIALLY Garp Vs Kuzan could all qualify as that.

I think during little garden Oda had planned for it to be a location for the straw hats but with the way the story had gone and even the last 5 years he probably figured he wouldn’t. Elbaph is probably the one island in the entire series that was shown with accuracy (with sillouettes of the tree and even the waterfalls) that he’d completely drawn out but decided to show it with big mom and shanks without completely showing us everything because of the slight chance that we might see it. He even admitted during egghead that they’re pretty much going to have to go there now.
I've been thinking for a while now that there's no way we are on the last arc with everything that still needs to happen and the plans being revised might suggest it won't be over anytime soon!
I feel like a lot of this stuff could be revisited in movies and spin-off stories either written by oda himself or handed off by him to other mangakas he trusts. The man has been drawing nearly non stop for almost 30 years now. But there still feels like there’s so much one piece left to tell even once the mainline story ends.

I'm pretty sure the free for all battle refers to the individual battles we just saw on the egghead arc, with law vs blackbeard, kuzan vs garp, shanks vs kid etc. I completely agree there is evidence that Elbaf wasn't planned for some time, but I think you failed to mention Oda's plan in early One Piece which I believe did include Elbaf, aswell as the deecision of including it probably taking place before Jump Festa 2024, because the "I don't think I can stop Luffy" seems like a pretty big "Elbaf yes" to me

Sure we didn't get an entire fistikuffs scene playing out but it did very much happen. "That guy and that guy" was most likely Rocks and Roger. And I think Oda made a big mistake in not taking the opportunity to make Elbaph an even more unique arc by breaking the structure pattern and actually have no antagonist at all. It could have been centred around vibing around, getting stronger and finding out more about stuff like the Nika mythos and other stuff this ancient civilization might offer. The fandom often expresses how disappointed they are with the lack of "crew just having fun", and this could have been Oda's last and only chance to make an entire arc with that vibe. Everyone on the island should already love the Straw Hats after all, both OG and New Giant Pirates, everyone worshipping Nika and so on. To actually have an antagonist is what feels off here. It could have been an arc made for the crew to actually learn new stuff, not just "next guy to punch".
this is the first arc im actually gonna fully experience in weekly fashion, i finished catching up with the anime and manga right around the time of the 5 elders appearing on egghead in the manga, so ive only experienced like 1/4 of egghead in weekly.
I love to know this, Elbaph was already making me feel that OP nostalgia. With the og crew, the adventurous feeling, etc. And now that I know it wasn't even planned, it triples that feeling. I loved Egghead, I've been loving everything new, but it has made me feel exhausted lore-wise. I feel like we needed a break from all the end of the road vibe, and to go back to the goofy pirate adventure we love. I have no doubt Oda will masterfully tie Elbaph together with everything else and once OP is done, people will go back to it and admire its foreshadowing and great writing, but I am all for an "improvised" arc full of adventure.
The big mom pirates needed katakuri, because he represents a darker and more serious take on a big mom pirate everybody else is more flamboyant or colorfull, they also get worked up very easily while katakuri is calm collected and serious about protecting everybody
I remember making a timeline prediction of all the arcs that would be in the final saga and Elbaf was on that list, but not Egghead Island. This is my new updated final saga list following that including the two arcs we have so far: - Egghead Island - Elbaf - Return of Rocks arc (NEW) - Lodestar Island - Raftel/Laugh Tale (throne wars) - World Government war (final war) - Epilogue I also previously predicted that One Piece could end as early as 2023 (boy was I wrong lol), but have now changed that to 2026 or 2027 to fit with the 30th anniversary of the manga
I guess most of us figured that Elbaph would happen just because there are so many references to it that we assumed was foreshadowing, including Usopp's desire to go there. But if the first few chapters of the arc are any indication, I seems clear that there wasn't really a plan on how to get there and Oda was coming up with things on the fly, which got a bit confusing.
The characters demanded he go, so he did. I'm willing to overlook that silhouette as a memory that might indicate Loki went through a Big Momification from childhood to adulthood, which suggests he'll plump up again when he reaches middle age. This will be immediately disproven when we get a childhood flashback of Loki in the final conflict of the arc. I can also overlook a tiny plothole. I mean, "after" covers a good length of time, and it's entirely possible that whenever they sailed by to "get a glimpse", they really didn't intend to interrupt anything, but caught sight of the two captains waving their broken weapons to catch their attention and then explain hey, we gotta go for silly reasons straight out of Dragon Ball but we'll be back!
I feel like Oda originally planned for the Strawhats to have their adventure in Elbaf, especially with all the hints he left in Little Garden. It's just that series has gone on for so long that he considered skipping it at some point, but ultimately couldn’t because of all the fan expectations. lol
I love the fact that Oda said he couldn't stop Luffy from going to Elbaph. It shows how alive the story is in his head and the lenght he goes to make sure Luffy is telling his own story. I can't imagine a way a character would convince the straw hats NOT to go there, Oda write his characters in such a honest way even he can't control them
i think oda probably always had a vague idea for elbaf since he introduced it, but then somewhere between dressrosa and wano he decided he might skip it to streamline the story. but then, after finishing wano and going into the final saga, he realized he should go ahead with it anyway. just seems like there's TOO much set up for him never having intended to go there. makes more sense to me that the idea for not going to elbaf was his plan from like 2018-2022, but then somewhere in egghead he changed his mind.
I can buy that there was no plan for Elbaf at the time of Little Garden, since it didn’t seem very plot important and seemed to be more of a lore dump explanation for the giants and their culture, and their influence on the Strawhats. But I don’t think it’s really a RECENT decisisiom to go to Elbaf, since it seemed like it may have been on the cards for Water 7. I don’t remember the exact details, but I think Oimo and Kashii even offered to give Usopp a lift there (when he was still seperwted from the Strawhats) when they got a ship together, and he said that it was ok because he was going to make it there himself. Of course this may have been just a thing, or maybe a location for the epilogue or a cover story, but that’s when I thought that we would probably see Elbaf at some point in the story
So either Oda is a an absolute genius of an improvisor who can make new interesting and well connected plotlines to the overall story on the fly, or he is playing chess while we play checkers and he do indeed have a more well thought out plan for his story than we thought before yet in all interviews and such he deliberately misleads us and make us think certain events will happen when they not and certain times for the Manga to end are set in stone when they are not. either way, he is a genius to pull it off.

This just makes me yearn for ALL of the things that ended up in Oda's rubbish bin. If he was fully prepared to ditch Elbaf as recently as last year, what else has he ditched without any fanfare at all? Given everything we *have* seen, it's hard to even imagine.
I think Nami and Zoro's backstory were pretty much left on the cutting room floor. Hers was supposed to be linked in a movie, it was confirmed. Everyone was anticipating Zoro's during Wano, and there are a few glimpses of a potential of one, but it never got realized. Makes me think that Oda just decided to scrap it. He did have a good reason for it (at least when explaining Nami's) as it didn't really serve any purpose for the larger story he was telling. I wonder what else he could've potentially left as well tho.

I really respect the love being given to Dawn&Dusk.
I see the "free for all fight" message fulfilled in Egghead because we had often pairings like Kid vs. Shanks, Law vs. Blackbeard, Garp vs. Aokiji, Blackbeard vs. Boa vs. Koby and so on in this arc. And I personally think that Loki looks like his silhouette in his devil fruit form.
Those are simultanious matchups not a free-for-all, the God Valley incident however was very much that.

I could see Elbaf not being planned contributing to some of the consistency errors in that one chapter. He might have still been working shopping character designs up to the last minute and didn't have enough time to go through everything and clean it up properly.

Honestly Rave Master (the comic Mashima-san made before Fairy Tail) does a decent amount of world building from what I recall.
I would have flipped if Oda decided to skip it. To be fair at the moment, we have no specific reason to come to Elbaf which feel so weird after three consecutive arcs with a clear goal all the way back to Dressrosa

But,from the point of view of the Straw Hats, they didn’t choose to go to Elbaph to accomplish a specific goal. They went there because Dorry and Brogy invited them and they wanted to visit.
Ever since Law left the alliance, we are pretty much going with the flow. Only Robin has a goal : go see Saul, which she learned was still alive two weeks ago I believe.

That's what I think too. The recent leaks for the upcoming chapter hint at more Shanks lore, so it wouldn't surprise me that Oda is using Elbath to spread out more of the vital backstory of the world before hitting into high gear for the big finale.
Loki may have been like the previously illustrated image of him but his DF changed him. Could be a good way to dive into what the DF's are and how they have personalities.

To play devil's advocate:
- Oda is always wrong about how long it'll take to complete the series, so using that as a measurement of how much we have left is a bit iffy at best
- Oda's quote isn't necessarily saying that "Elbaph wasn't planned at all". The way I interpret it, he could also be saying "Is there a way to skip the island but conjoin the plot elements elsewhere instead?", which feels like a way to cut corners while still having what was required for the story. Sort of like a back up plan to try and save time if he could. Ultimately, that idea was scrapped and he went through with Elbaph anyways, but there's some room to doubt that it wasn't at all planned.
You'd think since Usoupp was introduced that Elbaf was planned since damn near the beginning of the story.

This situation with Elbaf not being planned reminds me of the late Akira Toriyama and him not planning for there to be a Cell Saga or even Androids 16, 17, & 18! If you read the English localisation of the chapter from the Trunks Saga where Future Trunks reveals the identity of the Android that will appear in three years, as 19 & 20! This is not a mistake by the localisation team but a lingering plot hole from the original Japanese manga! Originally, Toriyama had planned on 19 & and 20, being the Androids that Future Trunks was warning everyone about instead of 17 & 18! However, his editor was critical of their designs, and thus, Toriyama created 17 & and 18, adding 16 for some added mystery and eventually creating Cell cause his editor was still not happy! This means the Cell Saga and even Krillin's relationship with 18 wasn't originally planned by Toriyama!
Dragon Ball was originally supposed to be just the Pilaf Saga. Everything after that was made up on the fly by Toriyama and his editors.
Elbaph definitely needed to happen. Especially since oda said he was inspired by his favorite anime Vicky the Viking which led to op and also ussop character is really tied to it
My only thought on how Elbaf could have been skipped is only if Imu did something "lulusia-ish" to the island with, ofc course, good context

I think "that guy vs that guy" was oda saying there was gonna be a lot of fights going on (black beard pirates vs garp and kobys group on hachinosu, and sabo vs imu and the elders on mariejois, black beard vs law on winners island, and shanks vs kidd on elbaf)
I mean, considering most of Oda-sensei's other improvisations have worked out famously, it's hard to believe Elbaf won't.
Oimo and Kashi arent exactly a plothole. What could have happened is they thought "yknow while we're over here in this half of the sea, lets go make sure the captains are ACTUALLY alive." (an excuse for wanting to see them after 100 years) and proceeded to check up on the captains. From there, any number of things couldve happened, and the plot hole is gone. They likely still fought, and they might have heard about what happened with loki and paused the duel went to go secure their homeland. From there, they met up with shanks and learned about luffy's whereabouts.
Well that guy and that guy could be so many things.
Luffy against the Gorosei to free Vegapunk from his government slavery.
Marines against BB to free luffy's wife.
Garp versus BB crew and his old pupil to free his new pupil.
There is a lot of that guy vs that guy in one piece recently and just before Elbaph.
He probably went back on it with how asked for elbaph is. Ever since dori and broggi appeared its been anticipated I feel like. We just hit a bunch of plot points in the way. I suspect it's has a rough draft of plot points on how to get to the final arc of the story rather than having it all thought out how its supposed to be.
I don't think the Oimo and Kashii thing is much of a plothole at all. They could have gone to Elbaf and then later decided to visit Little Garden, they might have even already been on the way there when that cover page with the newspaper happened

I think during little garden Oda had planned for it to be a location for the straw hats but with the way the story had gone and even the last 5 years he probably figured he wouldn’t. Elbaph is probably the one island in the entire series that was shown with accuracy (with sillouettes of the tree and even the waterfalls) that he’d completely drawn out but decided to show it with big mom and shanks without completely showing us everything because of the slight chance that we might see it. He even admitted during egghead that they’re pretty much going to have to go there now.
I've been thinking for a while now that there's no way we are on the last arc with everything that still needs to happen and the plans being revised might suggest it won't be over anytime soon!

The man has been drawing nearly non stop for almost 30 years now. But there still feels like there’s so much one piece left to tell even once the mainline story ends.

I'm pretty sure the free for all battle refers to the individual battles we just saw on the egghead arc, with law vs blackbeard, kuzan vs garp, shanks vs kid etc. I completely agree there is evidence that Elbaf wasn't planned for some time, but I think you failed to mention Oda's plan in early One Piece which I believe did include Elbaf, aswell as the deecision of including it probably taking place before Jump Festa 2024, because the "I don't think I can stop Luffy" seems like a pretty big "Elbaf yes" to me

Liam forgetting the God Valley flashback, which indeed was a free for all. Sure we didn't get an entire fistikuffs scene playing out but it did very much happen. "That guy and that guy" was most likely Rocks and Roger.
And I think Oda made a big mistake in not taking the opportunity to make Elbaph an even more unique arc by breaking the structure pattern and actually have no antagonist at all. It could have been centred around vibing around, getting stronger and finding out more about stuff like the Nika mythos and other stuff this ancient civilization might offer. The fandom often expresses how disappointed they are with the lack of "crew just having fun", and this could have been Oda's last and only chance to make an entire arc with that vibe. Everyone on the island should already love the Straw Hats after all, both OG and New Giant Pirates, everyone worshipping Nika and so on. To actually have an antagonist is what feels off here. It could have been an arc made for the crew to actually learn new stuff, not just "next guy to punch".

this is the first arc im actually gonna fully experience in weekly fashion, i finished catching up with the anime and manga right around the time of the 5 elders appearing on egghead in the manga, so ive only experienced like 1/4 of egghead in weekly.

I love to know this, Elbaph was already making me feel that OP nostalgia. With the og crew, the adventurous feeling, etc. And now that I know it wasn't even planned, it triples that feeling. I loved Egghead, I've been loving everything new, but it has made me feel exhausted lore-wise. I feel like we needed a break from all the end of the road vibe, and to go back to the goofy pirate adventure we love.
I have no doubt Oda will masterfully tie Elbaph together with everything else and once OP is done, people will go back to it and admire its foreshadowing and great writing, but I am all for an "improvised" arc full of adventure.
The big mom pirates needed katakuri, because he represents a darker and more serious take on a big mom pirate everybody else is more flamboyant or colorfull, they also get worked up very easily while katakuri is calm collected and serious about protecting everybody

I remember making a timeline prediction of all the arcs that would be in the final saga and Elbaf was on that list, but not Egghead Island. This is my new updated final saga list following that including the two arcs we have so far:
- Egghead Island
- Elbaf
- Return of Rocks arc (NEW)
- Lodestar Island
- Raftel/Laugh Tale (throne wars)
- World Government war (final war)
- Epilogue
I also previously predicted that One Piece could end as early as 2023 (boy was I wrong lol), but have now changed that to 2026 or 2027 to fit with the 30th anniversary of the manga

But if the first few chapters of the arc are any indication, I seems clear that there wasn't really a plan on how to get there and Oda was coming up with things on the fly, which got a bit confusing.

I'm willing to overlook that silhouette as a memory that might indicate Loki went through a Big Momification from childhood to adulthood, which suggests he'll plump up again when he reaches middle age. This will be immediately disproven when we get a childhood flashback of Loki in the final conflict of the arc.
I can also overlook a tiny plothole. I mean, "after" covers a good length of time, and it's entirely possible that whenever they sailed by to "get a glimpse", they really didn't intend to interrupt anything, but caught sight of the two captains waving their broken weapons to catch their attention and then explain hey, we gotta go for silly reasons straight out of Dragon Ball but we'll be back!

i think oda probably always had a vague idea for elbaf since he introduced it, but then somewhere between dressrosa and wano he decided he might skip it to streamline the story. but then, after finishing wano and going into the final saga, he realized he should go ahead with it anyway. just seems like there's TOO much set up for him never having intended to go there. makes more sense to me that the idea for not going to elbaf was his plan from like 2018-2022, but then somewhere in egghead he changed his mind.
I can buy that there was no plan for Elbaf at the time of Little Garden, since it didn’t seem very plot important and seemed to be more of a lore dump explanation for the giants and their culture, and their influence on the Strawhats. But I don’t think it’s really a RECENT decisisiom to go to Elbaf, since it seemed like it may have been on the cards for Water 7.
I don’t remember the exact details, but I think Oimo and Kashii even offered to give Usopp a lift there (when he was still seperwted from the Strawhats) when they got a ship together, and he said that it was ok because he was going to make it there himself. Of course this may have been just a thing, or maybe a location for the epilogue or a cover story, but that’s when I thought that we would probably see Elbaf at some point in the story

So either Oda is a an absolute genius of an improvisor who can make new interesting and well connected plotlines to the overall story on the fly, or he is playing chess while we play checkers and he do indeed have a more well thought out plan for his story than we thought before yet in all interviews and such he deliberately misleads us and make us think certain events will happen when they not and certain times for the Manga to end are set in stone when they are not.
