4:07 Lions did exist in Europe, but it was around the time of ancient Greece. The Greeks thought that they were cool, so they made several lion statues. Rome conquered Greece, saw the cool imagery, started making it's own lion statues, and we know how much Rome affected European culture.

FYI people, Lions were widely spread in greece, bulgaria and western balkans in the time of Pericles, some 2,6k years back. If you would go little further in time you would see lions in France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Balkans, Czech republic and Slovakia. Basically whole southern half of Europe in time of bronze age.
Lions were exterminated in continental Europe around year 100 BC, although in some parts of Caucasus there were lions until 10th century AD. According to Herodotus, lions were pretty common in grece in his years (480 BC), Aristotle (330 BC) states the lions are pretty rare in regions of modern Grece. Eurasian lion population in europe was, no surprise, hunted down into extintion (mostly because of hides and sport, hunting lions was true sensation of the day).

And also the remants of the most european lions are now extict in the wild which only exist in captivity, the Barbary Lion.

@@astrawby no, Egypt was a well established nation with connections to European countries waaay before the Romans ever expanded. The lions used in the Colosseum were North African lions. They went extinct too but it is known that they lived in atleast Palestine during the crusades.

@@arch_2932 From what i remember the Eurasian lion was a rare compared to their African counterpart by the time of Roman dominance in Europe, so they preferred to use those in the arena. The lions in Caucasus wasn't rare, but being located in the mountains, and being further from Rome, they probably wouldn't have bothered, same goes for the ones in India, would have been too difficult to get them to Rome.
My professor used to use Lions as a good example of why ancient sources suck for factual knowledge. While the descriptions were usually correct, they always thought that their own lions were superior (they thought elephants could reach the age of 500 years, and that they belonged to the same race as unicorns and dragons). But it's relatively certain that most lions used in the Colosseum by the time of Nero were African ones from Syria and Egypt, as those areas were Roman provinces by that time.

There is evidence of lions in parts of Europe up until 1 AD. I think the symbolism of them comes from Greek and Roman culture. They were hunted for sport and were a symbol of power. The Greeks in particular were obsessed with them and there are references to them in a lot of Greek literature

Lions were present in Europe in ancient times. They were also present in Europe during the Roman empire. Particularly the Barbary Northern African lions that were taken by the Romans, as it was a province of the empire. They were the largest and most majestic lions. Unfortunately they are extinct today. They are the ones which most European lion symbolism is based on.
