I don't get that appreciation shit... No one literally no one except for rare exceptions like police or medical personnel when they save your life do they ever get thanked. This dude is an asshole, like too many people nowadays... He gets it rough from people so he gets an attitude and takes it out on others... and the cycle perpetuates.. Like he doesn't seem to think there's a problem with collecting garbage at 6am, among other things... he has zero self awareness. I mean shit we all want praise but what he does just isn't any more important than any other job in the grand scheme so why does he deserve it, when the rest of us don't.

Still I was bullied. Then my parents found church that would pay for private Christian school. And after first year. The school itself gave me free tuition. Most white Christians. But super nice to me. But after school, went back tp Brooklyn with my oldest sister. Went to westley community college. Then went back to Florida for University of Florida. Met my husband there.

Freakin loved it. I worked as a garbage girl. Craziest thing is I worked garbage, but met my husband who was in Navy in manhattan during my dream job. Fyi. It was job during uni. Met my husband at down town frankos. I was embarrassed to say my job to him, but said the truth. He kept in contact. Moved in with him to become a deputy sheriff. I quit. Got accepted to pharmacy school surprisingly. Lived poor af. While my husband deployed. It took my 3 tries for pharmacy. Finally got into UF jax. Now we make decent. My husband is out of military. Now I’m paying back the favor being his sugar momma. While he uses his GI bill. But i do miss city work. Being a dep.

My Dad was a garbage man, my 2 uncle's are still in the trucks. They had their own company for a while, then Waste Management bought them out and gave them jobs. They are going on 30 years with WM. They both run front loaders now. But I remember being a kid working with them in the summers as a thrower. Fun job hanging off the back of the truck, sucked some days but that's most jobs! Respect 🙏🏽
Love those garbage people! One of my exes family owned and operated a waste management company.. they were such great people, worked really hard and played even harder. I miss them more than the ex.
I have a friend that's a garbage man and he works 6 days a week and only gets x-mas and New Year's Day off and works 10 hours a day in Broward County, FL. Sorry but I am not buying his 2-3 hour days.
I respect this man. Dude has done more to serve my hometown and keep the streets clean in his 20 years of service than most will their entire lives. Mr. Owen has certainly paid his dues and earned his retirement.
theo, the interviews you do with regular blue collar workers like most of us here in the comments are the best man. you dont see someone as well known as you giving attention and props to the people that keep the cogs turning in this world. you have a young audience and hearing information like this may incourage them to persue a job like this or the other jobs you've spoke about

It’s every country. But i do agree. To make the greatest city, most popular city on earth requires men like this. I actually did trash. Was a deputy sheriff in Duval. My husband convinced me to go through pharmacy school so I quit. My husband was military and at time we were poor af. While I was trying my best. Dollar tree food. But. We did math. Working for VA. My husband retires mil at 38. Gets JSO. I retire from VA also do blended retirement for JSO. So we both double dip, pay off our homes. Bring in 6 figures yearly at 65 no issue.
Respect to all the service workers out there. You can see how fast his emotions kicked in when theo brought up 9/11. That was 22 years ago. Never forget.
My dad was a garbage man in NYC for 30+ years and I currently work in sales for a private sanitation company in NYC. Sanitation services are soooo important in a big city and the guys who pick up the garbage tend to be super underappreciated. This episode was so awesome to listen to!! I often think about the human history that is lost because historians only discuss people “relevant/significant” to current society. Conversations like this help ease my mind as I realize there are still people interested in and documenting the life of the average or unnoticed people in society. Wayne was such a great guest. I love that Theo does these. I’m a native NY’er and we love our sanitation workers. It’s crazy how technical schools, civil service jobs pay more than 4-6 yr degrees. My husband went to tech school and he started at 6 figures and my 6 yr degree started nowhere near that.

I volunteer to pick up garbage around the city and our apartments. This was a real eye-opener. Sadly, bottles are not recycled. I really respect this guy for what he has done. This job is hazardous waste, ( think needles, foil with fentanyl, adult diapers with pooh poop on them, shards of glass, pee in water bottles, used condoms, etc etc). My granddaughter loves the garbage man, she greets him often. One time he even came back with a gift for her. You guys have one of those jobs where no one really notices until it starts backing up. Thank you for all the hard work, good luck with your future.

As a guy who works at a city transfer station, I love listening to these episodes at work. Theo is a man of the people. He gives us normal folk a spotlight from time to time and he’s great because of it. Unrelated- it is a crime against humanity that Theo and Bobby Lee don’t have their own show together. They are a match made in heaven

Grew up in Chicago, my Dad would put a 6 pack on top of heavy item's, we all respected the garbage man. My grandfather used to walk the alley's looking for lawnmowers, and small engines to have me rebuild.. much respect!!

This is awesome. I work in campgrounds cleaning garbage and outhouses. It's nice to hear someone else's positive perspective and proud to talk about it publicly. I know the feeling when someone asks you "So what do you do for a living?". NYC Garbage Man articulates it well. Be proud of what you do, it helps your community.

I'm from the UK. I was a bin man at one point. It paid okay. I learned some things doing that. About society. Poverty and wastefulness. I learned that poor people (I grew up poor) waste a lot more than people with money. There's a lesson there. I love the fact you're interviewing 'real' people' Love you, Theo!!!
Weirdly enough when I was broke, I would waste money until I was back down to 0 again, everytime, no idea why, I'd just fins things to spend it on. When I got money, I spent less and kept a hold of a lot more of it.
You are correct. I currently drive a recycle truck in the UK and when I do the poorer areas the amount of shit they buy is unbelievable. When I do the wealthier areas there is not even half as much to collect.
I have come to the realization (and most haven't figured it out) that it's not that poor people make bad decisions. It's in fact the opposite. People that consistently waste and make poor decisions become and stay poor. It's the same/opposite for rich people.
I love some things about being over 70 and single and waking to UA-cam auto play is one. Occasionally a hit like this is on. Honestly my favourite podcast episode ever. I worked briefly as a garbage sorter as a recycling plant, and we sometimes envied the guys on the trucks. Still a tough job, but they saw the city, fresh air, and we stood on the line sorting the crap from the recycling. Love ya fellas

As a NYC civil servant, I appreciate this interview. i don't work for DSNY but I'm one of the mechanics that repairs and maintains the largest municipal fleet in the country. We certainly have stories too.
It's crazy to compare his comfort level from the beginning to the 2 hour mark, Theo is really good at making people feel welcome, and comfortable enough to truly let their inner goofball out.

These types of episodes are always a million times better than any comedian or celebrity guests. Theo can just connect with real people on another level and it’s always really interesting to hear how his mind works and comes up with great unorthodox questions for these people who seriously make the world civilized and livable. I’ve listened to every one of them as soon as I seem them drop. Can’t get enough of the Normal People series.

What he said about keeping the truck clean and fresh at the end of the day is so true! You are the space in which you keep. There's a stigna that truck drivers are dirty, and some are tramps, but the majority of us have pride and keep the truck smelling fresh and gleaming

The fact this dude tips his guys makes him a great supervisor. I'm not a supervisor, but I take care of my crew like I am one, and in turn, they're happier workers and take orders better. I only buy lunch/dinner from time to time, but I've been contemplating giving them $100 each at some point and Christmas is the perfect time. Thanks for the idea. Dude these are the best interviews. Regular people are so much more fun to listen to than a celeb whos trying too hard to come off a certain way.
I don’t know about most fun but they are more interesting. Some of the comedians are actually good at being funny believe it or not.
This isn't a regular dude. Regular dudes are trying to get his job to this day. Regular dudes are at some random warehouse knowing good and damn well they gonna work till the day they die. This dude has a retirement plan 😅😅😅
And Theo kills 'em! He has this astounding ability to talk with strangers like he's known them for years AND talk with people he's known for years as if he's meeting them for the first time. It does something magical in the atmosphere of the interview.

Freakin loved it. I worked as a garbage girl. Craziest thing is I worked garbage, but met my husband who was in Navy in manhattan during my dream job. Fyi. It was job during uni. Met my husband at down town frankos. I was embarrassed to say my job to him, but said the truth. He kept in contact. Moved in with him to become a deputy sheriff. I quit. Got accepted to pharmacy school surprisingly.
Lived poor af. While my husband deployed. It took my 3 tries for pharmacy. Finally got into UF jax. Now we make decent. My husband is out of military. Now I’m paying back the favor being his sugar momma. While he uses his GI bill. But i do miss city work. Being a dep.

Theo understands what most other Podcasters don’t. Every day average people can turn out to be extraordinarily interesting and entertaining guests. This garbageman is definitely one of them.
Theo is in his own genre of podcast with regular blue collar people like this. Working class finally getting some respect, wouldn't expect less from a southern man.
I love that Theo does these. I find them way more interesting than listening to a comedian who's just doing the rounds to promote their new special.

My Dad was a garbage man, my 2 uncle's are still in the trucks. They had their own company for a while, then Waste Management bought them out and gave them jobs. They are going on 30 years with WM. They both run front loaders now. But I remember being a kid working with them in the summers as a thrower. Fun job hanging off the back of the truck, sucked some days but that's most jobs! Respect 🙏🏽

I have a friend that's a garbage man and he works 6 days a week and only gets x-mas and New Year's Day off and works 10 hours a day in Broward County, FL. Sorry but I am not buying his 2-3 hour days.

It’s every country. But i do agree. To make the greatest city, most popular city on earth requires men like this. I actually did trash. Was a deputy sheriff in Duval. My husband convinced me to go through pharmacy school so I quit. My husband was military and at time we were poor af. While I was trying my best. Dollar tree food. But. We did math. Working for VA. My husband retires mil at 38. Gets JSO. I retire from VA also do blended retirement for JSO. So we both double dip, pay off our homes. Bring in 6 figures yearly at 65 no issue.

My dad was a garbage man in NYC for 30+ years and I currently work in sales for a private sanitation company in NYC. Sanitation services are soooo important in a big city and the guys who pick up the garbage tend to be super underappreciated. This episode was so awesome to listen to!! I love that Theo does these. I’m a native NY’er and we love our sanitation workers. It’s crazy how technical schools, civil service jobs pay more than 4-6 yr degrees. My husband went to tech school and he started at 6 figures and my 6 yr degree started nowhere near that.

Shoutout to ALL sanitation workers! Truly an underrepresented trade while being an absolute necessity for every aspect of our society.
As a normal dude with a normal job, it’s pretty cool to see some props given to a normal dude with another normal job.
I volunteer to pick up garbage around the city and our apartments. This was a real eye-opener. Sadly, bottles are not recycled. I really respect this guy for what he has done. This job is hazardous waste, ( think needles, foil with fentanyl, adult diapers with pooh poop on them, shards of glass, pee in water bottles, used condoms, etc etc). My granddaughter loves the garbage man, she greets him often. One time he even came back with a gift for her. You guys have one of those jobs where no one really notices until it starts backing up. Thank you for all the hard work, good luck with your future.
It’s weird that so many talk shows and media organizations only talk to the big names, as if somehow they have a better story to tell than guys who are working in the cruddiest, most interesting, most important industries in this country. Please keep doing more of this!

As a guy who works at a city transfer station, I love listening to these episodes at work. Theo is a man of the people. He gives us normal folk a spotlight from time to time and he’s great because of it.

Grew up in Chicago, my Dad would put a 6 pack on top of heavy item's, we all respected the garbage man. My grandfather used to walk the alley's looking for lawnmowers, and small engines to have me rebuild.. much respect!!

This is awesome. I work in campgrounds cleaning garbage and outhouses. It's nice to hear someone else's positive perspective and proud to talk about it publicly. I know the feeling when someone asks you "So what do you do for a living?". NYC Garbage Man articulates it well. Be proud of what you do, it helps your community.

I'm from the UK.
I was a bin man at one point. It paid okay.
I learned some things doing that. About society. Poverty and wastefulness.
I learned that poor people (I grew up poor) waste a lot more than people with money. There's a lesson there.

Weirdly enough when I was broke, I would waste money until I was back down to 0 again, everytime, no idea why, I'd just fins things to spend it on. When I got money, I spent less and kept a hold of a lot more of it.
You are correct. I currently drive a recycle truck in the UK and when I do the poorer areas the amount of shit they buy is unbelievable. When I do the wealthier areas there is not even half as much to collect.
I have come to the realization (and most haven't figured it out) that it's not that poor people make bad decisions. It's in fact the opposite. People that consistently waste and make poor decisions become and stay poor. It's the same/opposite for rich people.

I love some things about being over 70 and single and waking to UA-cam auto play is one. Occasionally a hit like this is on. Honestly my favourite podcast episode ever. I worked briefly as a garbage sorter as a recycling plant, and we sometimes envied the guys on the trucks.
Still a tough job, but they saw the city, fresh air, and we stood on the line sorting the crap from the recycling. Love ya fellas

As a NYC civil servant, I appreciate this interview. i don't work for DSNY but I'm one of the mechanics that repairs and maintains the largest municipal fleet in the country. We certainly have stories too.

I’m 40 minutes in and I’ve thought since the beginning he was very comfortable for a regular guest. Now I’m excited to see how much better it might get
These types of episodes are always a million times better than any comedian or celebrity guests. Theo can just connect with real people on another level and it’s always really interesting to hear how his mind works and comes up with great unorthodox questions for these people who seriously make the world civilized and livable. I’ve listened to every one of them as soon as I seem them drop. Can’t get enough of the Normal People series.
Drove garbage trucks for almost 11 years, this was hilarious. So many relatable parts of the stories.. we had “collectors” too, trucks looking like Sanford & Son 😂

These interviews are Theo's best podcast work in my opinion. Absolutely fascinating and these people all carry on a great conversation just as well as any famous guest.
What he said about keeping the truck clean and fresh at the end of the day is so true! You are the space in which you keep. There's a stigna that truck drivers are dirty, and some are tramps, but the majority of us have pride and keep the truck smelling fresh and gleaming
The private guys that do our block have a pretty well maintained truck, thing still looks almost brand new

I’ve listened to every single podcast you have put out within the past two years. might have missed a couple here and there. HUGE FAN!! I spend majority of my time listening to you and Joe while I make delivery’s all day. You two guys have pulled me out of depression in a incredible way so many times brother and I thank you for that! man theo and joe have helped me mentally in so many ways. just listening to them is such a good distraction from life man. i will always feel indebted to the both of them.
The fact this dude tips his guys makes him a great supervisor. I'm not a supervisor, but I take care of my crew like I am one, and in turn, they're happier workers and take orders better. I only buy lunch/dinner from time to time, but I've been contemplating giving them $100 each at some point and Christmas is the perfect time. Thanks for the idea.
Edit: I'm a custodian for schools, so I can definitely relate to this guy. I was just saying how much I love my job though it's a job that is looked down upon.

Shit screw what people think they don’t sign your paychecks. I like people who like their jobs because they are lot happier to be around in the workplace. I can tell who wants to be there and who doesn’t. I generally avoid with a negative attitude shit everyone likes a cool custodian.
