    Today we are working on Trevor's Jeep, his radiator has a leak and we are trying out the Mityvac coolant pressure tester. this is good for looking for leaks in the coolant system. it is also really good for looking for headgasket issues that a person may suffer. Trevor's jeep with the bad radiator did have a coolant system leak but it past the head gasket test.

    When pressure testing for a blown head gasket how much should the pressure jump when revving?

    when engine starts,coolant pump will built pressure as well.I think the meter will raise up.

    What if you saw oil in the coolant...you suspect head gasket leaking between coolant and oil passage....
    Could you remove all coolant from system and then pressurize it and listen for air in the crankcase? Or vice versa and pressurize the crankcase with coolant in system and look for bubbles?

  • @jasont1917
    @jasont1917 5 років тому +3

    I don't see how that test could work on checking your head gasket unless the thermostat is open. If its closed you just reading radiator pressure.

      when they open the cap to put the kit in the radiator its steaming so probably thermostat is already open

  • @retiredppd
    @retiredppd 7 років тому +3

    Another way to check for a blown head gasket is to run it with the engine with the cap off and look for bubbles coming up from the coolant. Also on a cold engine if you start it and the radiator hoses pressurize within a minute is a sure sign of a blown head gasket.

      +retiredppd that and if your exhaust is pure white and the oil looks like coffee

    • @MystikalDawn
      @MystikalDawn 7 років тому +4

      we were always told to shy away from the coffee looking oil as an indication for an internal coolant leak, mainly because if the customer only does short trips and the engine doesn't reach normal operating temp it can cause condensation in the oil.

      jerry bskorner I drive a 2004 Honda civic. I was driving back from Washington to California and my car started to slowly overheat so I pulled over. popped my hood and coolant was everywhere! I refilled it and my car was fine and was able to drive it over 400 miles until I got home. any ideas what the problem could be??

    Head Gaskets. I get some white goo on my oil cap. Might be a head gasket. But fuck it I have over 1 000 000 kms (600 000 miles) so I am not to worried about it. I haven't noticed any low coolant so if it is leaking it is a small one. As for oil Oh man that is a whole other story. I have to put about three litres in the old van between oil changes.

    • @SteveRobReviews

      Exactly... did this exact mistake, while I ran the test it held the pressure for a full 10 mins, went for a drive over 50 mpg with a faulty temp gauge and ended up taking off the head again and redo what I initially came to fix+the pressure leak from the cylinders made my radiator give up 😂

      Can you please explain that.
      My Honda Civic always has low coolant and overheat. No leak , holds pressure upon cooling pressure test, passed combustion test ( blue color liquid hasn’t changed)
      The only problem is the coolants always always gets pushed to the overflow and doesn’t drain back to the radiator.
