    I'm wondering what they do for anti corrosion efforts. Wash them each day? How many parts replaced with stainless. With Naval aircraft that fly low over the ocean, they often have what they call a "bird bath" at the field. It's a bunch of water jets in the concrete that shoot up, and they roll it through after each flight.

      Ships use something called "sacrificial anodes" to reduce corrosion. They are basically large chunks of a metal that is more reactive than steel and get corroded before the hull, and are designed to be a lot cheaper and easier to replace than structural metal. However, as far as I understand the concept, the metal ions basically form an electric circuit and a part of that is completed over the water. Whether it also works on a land vehicle that is much less wet, or at least not partially submerged, is a good question that I'd also like answered. Speculatively, it might work by completing a circuit with the battery/ground terminals? The region looks very dry, which helps slow down corrosion. Either way, the machines certainly don't get any better working in salt... I imagine the mine is very good friends with their welders and Cat dealer, haha.

      From my experience, companies that use machines near the ocean or in high-corrosion environments, have the cost of replacing the machine after a few years built into the cost of the product.
      I talked to a foreman with the company cleaning up Oak Ridge National Laboratories' nuclear waste site. They said that the stuff they were digging was so radioactive that they buried 2 brand new Cat 320s after 2 weeks. Then bought new ones. One of the haul truck drivers also said that the company replaced 100 dump truck's worth of tires after a month or two because of the same issue.
      Comes back to being built into the cost

      Nothing mate, I used to work at a salt mine and send the dozers for full rebuilds every 3 months

      I race at Bonneville Salt Flats just down the way from this video and what we try and do is treat as much material as we can in advance, then wash and scrub the rest when we finally get home. Some parts are sacrificed, I just replaced the complete brake systems on all 4 corners of my 2 year old Duramax GMC because everyday driving on the Salt, while racing, completely fills the wheel well all the way to within an inch of the tire. With the tractor shown here there is probably a million dollars in parts sacrificed, but if the miner can bring in more products for less money, like anything else, 2 thumbs up. When the wheels fall off my truck every 5 years, I buy another because I race, that's what I do.✌😎

    Seems like a good match for these scrapers.. no need for a push cat nice big loads, easy loading, honestly could use some greedy boards

      I just recently did some welding on this sight and there were dealer mechanics there everyday and a boneyard filled with quite a few newer series dozers, loaders and artic trucks just corroding away

      salt is only corrosive if its wet and well yes i get that salt looks very wet.. just saying lol salt needs moisture to corrode

    Can't see anything when cutting, they are too light for cutting heavy clay . Unless it has a HUGE drop center cutting edge . But then your cuts look like v ditches......
    I guess that's why motor scrapers have offset cabs + weight for down pressure when cutting.

    Wouldn't it be better to have larger side walls to, ya know, like, not have stuff spilling out?

      Adding hungry, greedy boards or extra side walls to contain more payload may affect the structure of the scraper itself. If they wanted more payload the customer might look at purchasing bigger machines if necessary. The tires may also be affected as manufactures have quality guidelines on pressure and payload while covering certain distances. Probably the reason why the truck is towing two scrapers, its within the parameters of the machines capabilities under load. The spilling out over the sides is an indication the bowl or scoop is fully loaded and can be picked up on the return cuts. This all depends on the density of the material too.
