Nice video but I really miss how to setup a dashboard using the button card. I start with an empty dashboard and click on the three dots to manage dashboard. I click on Add card and get an overview of the standard HA cards. Scrolling down I see “Custom Button-Card”. Clicking on this one I get an empty input screen. I was expecting to see icons to choose from. This video is too many steps forward in how to use the Button Card from scratch!
Thank you for the explanation/examples of custom button cards in HA. Great video to get you up-and-running. I think a video going through the documentation would also be helpful. I had to read through a lot of this multiple times before it started making sense.

But, I have questions. Button styles do not change and cannot be changed (height, color, transparency). I will say that I have written in the configuration.yaml file frontend: themes: !include_dir_merge_named themes and it costs custom theme .. Maybe it affects the change in button styles? I commented out this line, set the default theme, but still the styles did not change. Question: what should be done to change button styles (color, transparency, size, font number, etc.)? Thank you

Thank you Chris, very informative video. I have created several buttons using the info here. Can you change the font size of an entity value, for example the the value of a temperature sensor readout (eg 73F)? It would make those types of buttons more readable. Thank you.

I am very new to all of this, but I was wondering if I crated a custom button that was just to use the call service "Notify.alexa" what you would do to add the message and the data set to TTS. Example with Regular Button option the yaml looks like this: show_name: true show_icon: true type: button tap_action: action: call-service service: notify.alexa_media_astra data: message: Hello Shawn data: type: tts target: {} entity: media_player.astra How do I integrate the same functionality within the Custom-Button? I could not figure out from the instructions how to incorporate the data "message" and "type" in the coding. Thanks
For that you need to use "service_data" instead of "data". E.G.: ... tap_action: action: call-service service: notify.alexa_media_astra service_data: message: Hello Shawn data: type: tts

Great video as always. A quick question: what should I do to add an icon state depending on a different entity? My oven has a state sensor which i use to identify states and change icon design, but it also has a door sensor which I would add as a trigger for a different icon. Is it possible to add another entity's status in order to cange the icon appearance?
I think that using a helper and changing that helper via automation and then using that helper's state as a condition for the button. That is a first thought. Someone else might have a more elegant solution.
For the flashing gate buttons, I have a separate sensor for the garage door than the device I use to close the garage. How would I have the icon/color of the button change based on the sensor, but have the button action control the opener?
@@mostlychris Yes. So I have a zigbee sensor to tell if the garage is closed or not, and I have a Shelly smart relay to actually control the garage door opener. I managed to figure it out, I had to write a script to open/close the garage door, and have a custom button set up to call that script. The entity associated with the button was the sensor for the door itself, so I could have the states changed based on the door being open / closed
