I like these type of vids because it does one thing. Gives, honest, real life workings of normal people, doing a normal business and shows the shitty attitude that the British public has towards, not just car dealers but the whole service industry. Normal down to earth people, trying to do real normal work. We can all see it isn't a shitty back street garage, sales place on a main road. The setup, the money put into it show you are genuinely trying to be on the same footing as main dealers. In fact, the fact that this is a family run one, and not a cooperate run must sell 60 units a month dealer. Means you are probably getting better work, and more care towards a car that anyone could buy. I've had dealings with main dealers and some of the communication and shoddy work is shocking! Well done guys, all hard working, genuine blokes. Wish you the greatest success.

Commercial property agents dislike the motor trade. Banks hate the motor trader. Punters. Tend to Dislike car traders and garages. At least we’re not conning estate agents. I do think we should be ice cream men knocking out 10p cost Whippies for almost a fiver !!! They aren’t universally disliked. Either. And don’t get many a come back. I think you’re right about those MOTs Joe if it’s costing you money loose it. Plus you loose the hassle maybe baby steps, keep the servicing and maintenance for now but it sounds like getting rid of the MOTs would release some of that pressure.

General principle is to focus on your core business and the skills/people to grow it. Your focus looks to be car sales and as a small business do you really want a team fixing and MOTing cars when you could contract that. If you really think you want MOT/servicing business, have someone else focus on that.

Just wanted to say that I use a local mechanic that uses a separate garage to do MOTs. He charges an extra £30 for his time taking cars to the test centre and I think it’s well worth it. If it fails on something small it’s sorted the same day where as you’d have to take it back for a retest etc. I don’t understand people’s mindsets wanting something for nothing. I watch your weekly’s every Sunday night and it’s a real insight into the industry- I’d always quite fancied running a small sales/garage but not so sure now 😂 fair play to you though, chin up and all be well I’m sure 💪🏻🙌🏻

Your absolute integrity shines through. Your customers are so lucky. The problem is that to those people who don't have access to a second car, when they have an issue it's a catastrophe. The car has probably taken up most of their available funds; then being late for work and losing pay (could someone explain this concept to Jordan ? sorry, only kidding !!) school run, elderly parents etc, sadly the stress comes through in their panic and aggressive attitude. Not excusing such behavior and I know you know all this. Certainly clearing the workshop backlog and creating some slack will give you a massive breather when inevitable issues do arise and take the pressure off you and the team. Maybe nominate your senior technician to handle warranty in the first instance, freeing you up to do what you do best....... Sorry, not telling you your job, but now I've typed this I shall leave it here.

Love the content, as we get to see the every day of running a car dealership. Also looking forward to the collab with Chops Garage. Maybe stop doing MOT's for the short term, then long term, once you have a unit or a bigger space you can then have 3 or 4 bays just on Mot's, and 3 bays for mechanical work. You will be fine, be positive always. People nowadays have no patience, no people skills, and just want to blame other people for whatever is going wrong in their lives. You have always been honest with these videos. Keep up the good work. Hope Toby moved okay

I get round this MOT fee malarkey by charging £38 for a pre MOT check.
90% of customers opt for this.
Advantage being they get a clean MOT as I've got to know over the years what my tester looks for, so we carry out any work before the test.
If the list is too big at least they get pre warning and have a bit more time to decide what to do whether to go ahead or scrap or sell for parts ⚠️

Feel for you Joe, dealing with the general public might be one of the worst parts of any job. Trying to run your own business and trying to please everyone must be that much worse. I work in a small workshop in a factory and my "customers" are engineers, workers and some managers and that's bad enough as it is - bearing in mind these are supposed to be mechanically minded people who should understand things take time - nope. I don't think I would last in any hospitality or customer service focused job, my patience these days is way too thin!

Wow- that was some watching and it sort of gave an insight to car dealership , fly on the wall style. Not all a bed of ‘WOSES’ as the say in my part of the world. I understand we all need to make a living and I know employing humans is hard work. For my own experience, car dealers have alway tried to rip me off and even LR Warranties are not honoured even though the words say otherwise.. Barrett’s of Ashford put my ACE bar through but a year later, not my wishbones. They said ‘ we have put too many through and they are knocking them back’.
FYI- LRwarantee was £1200 a year…. So not small . To use your phrase- ‘Not my problem’.
    Still,
10 years on the L320 is still fulfilling its £30k point sale price- it seemed a lot of cash that long ago….Maybe I expect too much.

A customer of mine ran a small car sales and repair for many years but in the 2000s he gave it up as he said regarding warranty claims every customer is your boss for 3 months. A chap drove 60 miles back to his garage because a small bulb had blown. It actually cost the customer more in petrol.

It seems most mechanics are going through the same scenario as you. Mechanics should be doing really well but there is something going wrong with all all of them. One thing I have noticed is they all don't have enough ramps to work on. One needs double the amount one thinks they need because you must now realise that getting parts is not that easy. Japan started it with their just in time business which is great until wars begin and now part making has to move to other countries. You strip the vehicle down on the ramp and then can't get the new part so one has a dilemma. Plenty of ramps then you leave it till the part appears. If you need the ramp then one puts it back together and moves off the ramp to store it somewhere which ends up being double work for same money. 🤔🤔

I really hope you get out of this hole, profit doesn't come easy especially with the outlay you have. When I looked to expand a few years ago I had lots of people say to me you'll work half a day more per day by employing people for very little reward. I don't know how you manage buddy but keep that chin up and stay on the right path

Stress🤯With two full time valeters and mechanics now with no outside work cars should be leaving you in pristine condition, Maybe cut down on the warranty claims get them to get busy and less standing about get them all a locker to put their phones in when working when I served my time in the motor trade would have got my arse kicked if using a phone and standing about with hands in my pockets a big no no. Hope they appriciate how decent easy going boss they have

You should stop buying in older Mercs and the like - huge potential for big warranty claims + you can't carry an excess on the payroll for long - but you already know that. Any job where you deal with Joe Public means you're going to encounter some of the scum of the earth, more so if you are a cheaper option in any business. It does make for entertaining videos though.

I agree with that, tbh he's buying what he wants to run himself, then obviously not liking it when it's big bills, I've got a few lumpy cars parked up and I'll loose 1000s,your customers on big mercs, audi, BM, s are a nightmare, they're basically using you to run their car at your expense for a few mths, you go to the auction tho and your tempted, I can understand it...

  • @roystonvehicles9129

I try to just stick to Internet sales that we ideally deliver, you do get a lot less comebacks, I was the friendly local garage but local people are a nightmare, bought discs and pads for a BM last year for a job, customer didn't like the quote, did at first then it's too dear, I sent em back, a few mths down the line he's calling for a wheel bearing doing like nothings happened, I just fu**Ed him off, if you do work maybe just do a service, discs and pads, no big jobs.

Why would you fit a brand new engine? He has no legal right to that plus that car with a brand new engine would be worth more than what you initially sold it for. Situations like that just issue a refund.

I would 100% get rid of the mechanical side and MOT and just stick to car sales .Dealing with the public who want something for nothing and there lives are so empty they have to winge about everything are not worth it. Keep doing what you’re doing

Even I’m shocked doing it all. Car sales is often on the side of repair garage cum MOT station business. Not incorporated as one all too often. Cars make more money. Stand-alone. Just keep the mechanic/s and workshop
