THANK YOU. So many people miss this simple statement. Most lyricist would say "We've got to carry each other" but Bono distinctly emphases how it an an honor to do so. As a closet empathist this song cuts deep
I am 17 years old and have been a major fan of U2 for my entire life. I love it that you react to this, cuz music this amazing doesn't deserve to fade away under this new generation. ❤
Interesting fact, the band was going in two different directions at this point in time. They could not agree on the sound moving forward for u2. Bono said that this point in time was the closest they came to splitting up. Then one night in the recording studio, the guitarist - The Edge - showed the rest of the band the riff he had been working on (the gentle one you hear at 4:25). It united the band together, and they have never looked back.
A lot of people think that this is a love song, but it's not. At the time that U2 were writing the Achtung Baby album in 1991, the were on the verge of breaking up. They were constantly fighting with each other, going in different directions. Thus song is a song about breaking up, about betrayal. Which is why it baffles Bono why anybody would play it their wedding (which many people choose to do). You gotta check out U2 - One live at Slane Castle, one of the best live performances of the song ever.
I've read "One" is a very popular song played at weddings. But... It's a breakup song. U2 did a version of this with Mary J Blige and it is also awesome. Thanks for making me smile again Silas.
I would not call this simply a breakup song. This is a song about damaged people and the toxic strain they put on other people when they try to manipulate others to quell their own pain.
@@AnthonyL0401 According to Bono this was written when the band was on the point of breaking up and this was actually a song to help the band members realise that they needed each other.
This is one of the best albums of the century, Achtung Baby. It was recorded in Germany, hence the name. Every song is nearly as powerful as this one, although this is probably the best. The preceding album, The Joshua Tree, is a close 2nd IMHO. You should review them both.
'The fly' 'Acrobat' 'Stuck in a moment' 'Original of the species' 'Bad' 'Stay (faraway so close)' 'Desire' 'Hawkmoon 269' 'Heartland' 'A sort of homecoming' 'Bullet the blue sky' 'Until the end of the world' 'Mysterious ways' 'Where the streets have no name' 'Moment of surrender' 'Raised by wolves' any one of these you won't be disappointed I guarantee it. This is just scratching the surface as well!!!
I love your approach to these reactions Silas - new subscriber! Keep it going with the U2 journey. They were one of the most important and influential bands of the 80s, 90s, 2000s and beyond. Unmistakable vocals, innovative guitar sound, and bold lyrics that challenged the human condition on all levels and strongly advocated for social justice and equality across the globe. Their live performances are epic. They made a big splash at 1985's Live Aid with their performance of "Bad" (a must listen!). They also documented their 1987 Joshua Tree tour and released it as a full-length feature film called "Rattle and Hum" which was shown at movie theatres across the country. They've never been satisfied with status quo and have changed with the times which helped with their longevity. A lot to explore with this super-group.
Excellent reaction video to a spectacularly brilliant song, my friend. I would humbly recommend a generally lesser known gem - U2's *Please,* off of one of U2's most underrated yet greatest albums ever released; U2's PoP, alongside their hugely magnificent "PoPMart" tour.
U2 always come through, they are spectacular. I suggest Pride (In the Name of Love), New Years Day and Zoo Station. But honestly you can't go wrong with any of their songs!
Well done "riding it out" as you said and not pausing. It's so important to let the emotion of a song build and pausing gives you relief from that. You only get one first listen and great to see how often you make the most of it!
Powerful is a good word for that. I saw it grab you by the soul when Bono hit the bridge. Awesome reaction, that's how I felt the first time I heard it, too.
You could listen "Sometimes you cant make it on your own" and read a little bit about that song before listening, please. I didnt understand a lot of it till my father died years ago.
If you're going to do a U2 album, then the "Joshua Tree" is the way to go. They had become pretty popular prior to its release but it was a MASSIVE hit for them and elevated them into one of the top-tier bands.
The first time I heard U2 was on MTV with their video Gloria. Awesome song and that was1982 and I knew then they were gonna be one of the greatest bands ever. You should review Bullet the Blue Sky or Twilight or anything off of The Joshua Tree album. New Year’s Day is another awesome one. Red Hill Town another one. They have great music.
I think you've heard 2 of U2's 3 profound relationship-technical life wisdoms.❤ That's missing the lesser-known, recent UK No. 1 hit "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" (Bono dedicated to his father). Now you will soon have to discover a new side of U2. P.S. Do you know that from September 29th U2 will inaugurate the visually fantastic new building The Sphere in Las Vegas, with the main focus on the album Achtung Baby 1991, played on the legendary ZOO TV tour back then. Honestly, I don't really know, what I should think of it.
We all got our own interpretations, but for me, "With or Without You" is for when you're a teenager and are suffering from unrequited love. "One" is for when you're in your twenties and are no longer putting your partner, or yourself, on a pedestal - a realistic song for adults in a relationship that is dying.
If you listen to U2's re-release of this song, but Mary J Blige is added into it... switches it up completely. The song, already brilliant, makes a new kind of point, with her addition. Plus, her vocals are stellar. I'd love to see your react to that one..!
It's funny because I've heard this song so many times over the years but not in a long time and guess what? I got goosebumps right at the same moment you did! Hey man, check out Sunday Bloody Sunday!
When I'm old and record my masterpiece (U2 did when they were young) , I want someone like Silas in the studio...not doing anything...just vibing in the control room.
JoshuaTree is a great album to react to but if you want to see were it all started the album Boy is what you should listen to, even if you do it on your own and not on the channel. Imagine the early 80's still mired in disco and the big hair bands. U2 was so different. So fresh and new. I still love them!
U2 has very different sides to them. Try Newyearsday, The Unforgettable Fire (about the hiroshima bomb), Angel of Harlem, Sunday bloody sunday (about northern Ireland). They have so much more. But start with these. You will understand why they are the biggest rockband in the world since the 80s. I like Summer of love as well. Its very recent. These guys are a treasure. Grew up with them and were my childhood heroes. Been to 3 concerts of them. Out of this world.
Liked their songs but became a true fan after seeing them on the zoo tv tour in the Astrodome. My older brother and his friend had a ticket. Let Kravitz opened. I got scalped tickets when they added shows to the tour that included the then “Summit” (later known as the “Compaq Center”, currently Lakewood Church). I think Public Enemy opened on that one…the openers may be reversed…I old now…lol. To get a good feel for U2 (phases 1 and 2) checkout the movie Rattle and Hum. Prolly can’t do a reaction to it as I’ve never seen a reaction to it…it has a lot of good live performance footage. The accompanying album of the same name it a U2 staple.
MUST try U2s song “ SO CRUEL “ MY FAV!!! Similar to “One”. splendid instrumentation in the background and amazing lyrics. Try “ SO CRUEL “. I promise you’ll love it.
Recomendations: "Bad" from Live Aid 1985, "With or Without You" live from Paris 1987 or "All I Want is You/Where The Streets Have no Name" from Slane 2003. You'll see U2 is even better live. If a full album is what you want I'd recommend All That You Can't Leave Behind from 2000.
I’m Australian but I flew to London and saw them at Wembley Stadium and they were great. I suggest “Where the streets have no name” and “Bad” as future listens. You might also like to try Radiohead. In Rainbows and OK Computer are two great albums.
Bro, maybe do U2's War album. Much harder and all great tunes. And if you want to do a live concert, do U2 Live st Red Rocks, Under a Blood Red Sky. Top 5 best concert of all time.
Check out the Live Aid performance of Bad...they were relatively unknown, until their epic live performance. Its every bit epic as Queens performance at Live Aid.
Drowning man, stay faraway so close,11 O' clock tick tock, pride in the name of love, the fly, with or without you, wire, gloria, The unforgettable fire,
You need to do Bad and Exit both cranked up. Bad always brings tears for me it’s special. Exit is just awesome and often unnoticed but best listened to with headphones. Continue with your U2 journey. You won’t be disappointed. It’s a spiritual and musical journey 😂 if you know, you know. Enjoy!
I came to U2 late - did not buy an album until Joshua Tree came out. That album is a sonic delight. But some friends held that album in disdain, saying that U2 had "sold out". I disagree. If a band does not change and grow with new concepts, they get boring. U2 has huge catalogue, quite a deep rabbit hole to explore. Should clarify, in the mid-80's it was CDs (compact discs), not vinyl albums per se. I love CDs compared to vinyl and cassettes.
I know you love pink floyd so could you please do a reaction to on the turning away the live remastered version...its a brilliant song and perfection...keep on rocking...cheers.
We GET TO carry each other. It's a privilege.
THANK YOU. So many people miss this simple statement. Most lyricist would say "We've got to carry each other" but Bono distinctly emphases how it an an honor to do so.
As a closet empathist this song cuts deep
The greatest song ever written
I am 17 years old and have been a major fan of U2 for my entire life. I love it that you react to this, cuz music this amazing doesn't deserve to fade away under this new generation. ❤
If you liked this one you'll love "Bad". I prefer the album version but a lot of folks will recommend the one from Live Aid.
The Live Aid performance is my favorite. Legendary.
'Bad' studio version is my favourite of them all
I say the best version is the Wide Awake in America version.
Live Aid version is the top version.
Prefer the Rattle and Hum live version myself 😊
One could argue that U2 had released both the greatest song in the 80's (With or Without You) and the 90's (One) and I would respect their opinion.
Interesting fact, the band was going in two different directions at this point in time. They could not agree on the sound moving forward for u2. 04:32 I react the same way 25 years ago. Still goosebumps. MASTERPIECE.
very POWERFUL. We're one, but we're not the same.
I saw U2 on their Zoo TV tour in Sydney when they came in 1993. You can see it on UA-cam.
A lot of people think that this is a love song, but it's not.
At the time that U2 were writing the Achtung Baby album in 1991, the were on the verge of breaking up. They were constantly fighting with each other, going in different directions. BAD next! BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD!
I've read "One" is a very popular song played at weddings. But... It's a breakup song. U2 did a version of this with Mary J Blige and it is also awesome. Thanks for making me smile again Silas.
When Johnny Cash asked U2 if he could record this song, they actually helped out in the recording studio. It really is a beautiful rendition.
I would not call this simply a breakup song. This is a song about damaged people and the toxic strain they put on other people when they try to manipulate others to quell their own pain.

Another one that hits me right in the feels is sometimes you can't make it on your own. So powerful
My very favourite group ever. Seen them several times live and they can make stadiums feel intimate.
U2 always come through, they are spectacular. I suggest Pride (In the Name of Love), New Years Day and Zoo Station. But honestly you can't go wrong with any of their songs!
Brilliant reaction to a brilliant song.
Looking forward to checking out your other reactions. ✌️
Best wishes from Ireland. ☘️
This song is consistently on the top 10 songs of all time list and for good reason.
Well done "riding it out" as you said and not pausing. It's so important to let the emotion of a song build and pausing gives you relief from that. You only get one first listen and great to see how often you make the most of it!
Goosebumps every time. Power of the voice, medley, and guitar. Check out "New Year's Day" next.
Powerful is a good word for that. I saw it grab you by the soul when Bono hit the bridge. Awesome reaction, that's how I felt the first time I heard it, too.
you should do some of the older stuff, New Year's Day, Two Hearts or Sunday Bloody Sunday all good ones
Sunday Bloody Sunday would be great for him to hear.
I agree!
You should check out their live performances 🙂
You could listen "Sometimes you cant make it on your own" and read a little bit about that song before listening, please. I didnt understand a lot of it till my father died years ago.

The whole Joshua Tree album rocks... Don't forget "Bad".
Their first handful of album's, were lyrical masterpieces...
I think you've heard 2 of U2's 3 profound relationship-technical life wisdoms.❤

Love this song, something I need to hear now and again..always makes me reflect on so many things in my life..great reaction

Welcome to the magic of U2! Enjoy the journey! If I were you, I would start with you early albums, and work your way up! Fasten your seatbelt!
Joshua Tree is the one - One tree hill

Bad and Kite are my two favorite U2 songs
Best song ever!!!
Where the Streets Have No Name is one of the best U2 songs and my all time favorite!! You should scope it!
U2 was my first concert in '87.
They're my mom's favorite. She's 65.
They're not mine, but I do like this song and a handful of others 😎👍
Check out “Bad” by U2. A tribute to Bono’s friend battling with addiction
love how you are always positive and smiling. Don’t ever change. 🫶🏽
Oh boy... once you start to listen to the LIVE versions.. can't wait for it

Their first hit in the UK was I Will Follow, the video is great they were as old as you Silas
MUST try U2s song “ SO CRUEL “
MY FAV!!!
Similar to “One”. splendid instrumentation in the background and amazing lyrics.
Try “ SO CRUEL “. I promise you’ll love it.
BAD is one of greatest songs ever! please take a listen! live aid version or studio is sitll stunning!
Listen to the entire "War" album. They do great ballads, but have some bangers too!
Please do Where The Streets Have No Name! Love your reactions
Achtung Baby, the album this song is from, is absolutely genius from start to end. Do yourself a favor and listen to it in its entirety.
Great song. I strngly recommend "The Fly", "The Unforgettable Fire", "Acrobat", "Dirty Day"!
I’m Australian but I flew to London and saw them at Wembley Stadium and they were great. I suggest “Where the streets have no name” and “Bad” as future listens. You might also like to try Radiohead. In Rainbows and OK Computer are two great albums.

You should checkout the U2 song “Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own” it’s about Bono and his father; they didn’t get along too well.
Love your reactions young man. Keep them coming.
i can't believe i'd forgotten about this song...
I’d love to see you react to two U2 tracks, the first being a song called Kite. And for a more upbeat tune check out Even Better Than The Real Thing
love your reaction young fella. I think this is their greates song, though there are a lot of their songs that could easily qualify .
I enjoy your reaction to this great band ... it seems like you "get" U2 ... enjoy the journey
Love this song. I feel the same as you every time I hear this song.
Album request: Joshua Tree
Check out the version with U2 and Mary J. Blige. Rocks out!
This is the best U2 song IMO. There's still some close contenders though
Do an album. U2 is a powerful band…..period.
Do yourself a favor, With or Without You and One live at Slane Castle, U2 Go Home. New Years Day from the same concert
Drowning man, stay faraway so close,11 O' clock tick tock, pride in the name of love, the fly, with or without you, wire, gloria, The unforgettable fire,
I'm here bc u have a colts football shirt on lol that's my team🎉 but I do love u2 ... I grew up in the 80's so they were on MTV alot
Silas please consider doing a video review of the song “Bad” at U2’s live aid performance. In my opinion they were every bit as good as Queen.
You should listen to "Bad" and "Exit" if you haven't already
You need to do Bad and Exit both cranked up. Bad always brings tears for me it’s special. Exit is just awesome and often unnoticed but best listened to with headphones. Continue with your U2 journey. You won’t be disappointed. It’s a spiritual and musical journey 😂 if you know, you know. Enjoy!
I say that I want Exit cranked high at my funeral
One (pun intended) of the best Lyrics ever written (if not the best). And the song itself is not bad either. ;-)
Great reaction to a great song!
U2 - The Joshua Tree for your next album reaction
He gets it.
I came to U2 late - did not buy an album until Joshua Tree came out. That album is a sonic delight. But some friends held that album in disdain, saying that U2 had "sold out". I disagree. Duet with Bono and Mary J. Blige is awesome
If you want to do an album, The Joshua Tree is their biggest and arguably best
Loving your U2 reviews
Try
Where the streets have no name
I still haven’t found what I’m looking for
Beautiful day
Bad
Pride in the name of love
A lot of these artists like U2 but time into their songs.
You need to react to the duet Bono did on this song with Mary J Blige. It's great.
U2 aggg corporate rock at its best.
New Years Day
Bad
Where the Streets Have No Name
Ultraviolet
Stay (faraway so close)
Who’s Gunna Ride Your Wild Horses
Walk On
Stuck in a Moment
You should listen to U2 Acrobat
Do a reaction to running to stand still/where the streets have no name live from Sydney
I know you love pink floyd so could you please do a reaction to on the turning away the live remastered version...its a brilliant song and perfection...keep on rocking...cheers.
Try U2 - The first time.
Do NEW YEAR'S DAY!
Reaction to George Harisson - My Sweet Lord
You should also do a reaction to Joe Cocker's version of this song. I like it better than U2's.
You keep picking the ballads. Try Pride, She moves in mysterious ways, Sunday Bloody Sunday, where the streets have no name, Angel of Harlem so many
Wh do you look like you're in pain when you're listening?
This was huge when it came out. It is ok in my book. I think I would prefer Metallica’s “One”. 😅
