  • In this video i try answer a question I have, Does Khatra Increase Arrow Speed? Using this method of bow shooting does have a profound impact on the arrow flight, but does it increase arrow speed. Through testing and continued practice in this style of Asiatic archery I have come to the conclusion that timing and consistency play a major role in the overall speed of the arrow. Your timing must be good to pull off consistent and fast arrow flight. I have mastered neither to this point I but am constantly striving to get the results I want.
In this video I am using the AF Archery Tatar bow 35 lbs. draw weight at 28 inches, and Linkboy 500 spine arrows at 462.9 grains in overall arrow weight.

Yes sir I would say definitely getting the bow out of the way as fast as possible would definitely increase the speed of the arrow. The least amount of contact with that arrow the better, great test Scott well done
Take care my friend God Bless.

Thank you my friend. I'm still learning the process but it's a fun journey to be on. Agreed on the contact with the bow, the less the better. Have a great day my friend. God bless my friend

Shooting without khatra is a static form, shooting with khatra is dynamic, as you say timing is important, but effectively when you shoot with khatra you increase your draw length slightly, more this produces a slightly higher arrow velocity

Hey Scott! So nice to see someone else using thumb draw method of shooting! I converted about 2 years ago and I am never going back. I use a leather thumb glove rather than a thumb ring. I also have the arrow on the left side of the riser (I am a right handed shooter). I also release the string in a dynamic manner like you. It hit my anchor and the arrow go. So fun to shoot this way and in my opinion it is truly instinctive in every way. Thanks for your videos you do a great job!

Thank you my friend. I really appreciate the comment and your time. Since I started this style of archery I haven't shot my recurves much as of late. I have tried a leather thumb protector but it caused a lot of discomfort in the thumb knuckle joint, that's why I use a thumbring. Agreed on the instinctive comment, as much as I have tried aiming it proves to be challenging. Thank you my friend for taking the time to comment. Have a great evening! Best regards

No doubt there is something to that side twist khatra increasing the speed a little bit. That's pretty darn cool if you ask me. But I don't think I could ever get the timing just right since my hand release is about as fluid as Joe Cocker's hands as he sings! 😜
And not surprised that the bamboo 600 grain arrows were slower. I just got some fiberglass 628 grain arrows, and although slower they do hit hard using either my 40 or 45lb bows. Anyway, great video my friend & as always God bless you!

Scott, no worries on the frequency of posts. I for one am just glad for the knowledge you share with us on your journey.
That being said, it does stand to reason that removing a point of contact would reduce the friction, hence the whole reason for drop arrow rests on a compound bow. I do wonder about the power loss from the side or the hybrid khatra as you're changing the direction of the force being applied (from true perpendicular power transfer to an offset angularity) from the limbs via the string to the arrow. The forward khatra keeps the string in line with with the arrow, allowing the force to be applied in straight line(true perpendicularity).
Not too sure if I said that in a sensible manner, or if it even makes sense regarding the physics of archery, but it's something sticks in my head and makes me question.
Looking forward to the upcoming content, and of course the giveaway. Take care!

Daos, thank you as always for your insightful comment. You did say it in a sensible manner. I tend to question a lot of things when it comes to form and release. I believe you to be on point with your explanation. Honestly I am so green at this style of archery I find myself rethinking the whole shot cycle to the point it has become a maddening obsession of mine. Yours and a few other comments have mentioned the point of contact and I agree completely that it does have an impact on arrow flight and speed of the arrow. As always, thank you for your time my friend. I really appreciate it. Have a great evening! Best regards

I started dabbling with Turkish bows a couple of years ago after a lifetime of longbow. I hunted with a tiny Turkish bow season before last and filled my tags but, shooting Mediterranean style. For whatever reason as a right handed shooter with thumb draw I shot wildly left. Now if I shoot left handed with the arrow on the left or western side I can hit pretty good. Not sure why. I even bought a cheap lefty bow cut to or near center thinking it was paradox. Same thing shot left like a stiff shaft would with thumb release. I guess without khatra you need more shaft flex.

I appreciate the comment and sharing your experience. I’ve tried Mediterranean style and noticed the same thing with these bows. I never land where I want to be. It definitely is the Kahtra that helps the arrow fly correctly. You are correct about the shafts needing more flex.

I got my Hungarian style long bow recently. It's a horse bow I'm sure. Very similar to the Tatar. I have yet to try it out. The weather has just been way too hot where I'm at. The range I go to is outdoor. I live in a suburban area and I'm kind of unsure about practicing out in my backyard where I have plenty of shade to block out that heat.

Awesome that you got the Hungarian Style longbow. I defitely like mlyhe one I purchased. I agree with you on wanting to be safe when out shooting, especially in suburban areas. Hi Scott!
I've made progress with my Tatar as well, alot of trial and error with my anchor point and draw length. I have a question about your set up.. the bow itself, the serving string just kept pushing away from where my arrow sits, did you just accept it or have you done something to combat that?
From what I understand from khatra, the side khatra is to reduce the arrow slap on arrow pass with a tiny bit of speed increase, forward is solely for speed but because of our wrist anatomy there will be some side khatra.
Ps. I'll include a link in a later comment regarding increasing speed with khatra(specifically forward I think) if you're interested.

Khatra has so many variations and definitely a wonderful explore
The black serving string where the arrow sits seems loose on my bow, sort of parting as if the nock is too tight. If I remember correctly some reviews on UA-cam do say that too, was just wondering if you've done anything to reduce that or the problem doesn't exist on your bow.
      Regardsss,
      Isaac

I have not noticed that issue. Are you using a tie on nock or brass press fit? I have seen that when I tie a nock too tight but only after I remove the nock. Might be a serving issue if you are using the stock string. Contact me through my website and let's see if we can't get you a new string for your bow to see if that helps. Have a great evening!
