Gosh! We left England in 1987, so this is a good walk down memory lane. I worked in the No. 7 on Shambles Street for a while - mad place! At the weekends we started the night at The George, then the Bodega (pie and peas on Saturday morning), then somewhere else I can't remember, then back to the George for t'last uns. Albion was the owner at the time. Can hardly manage two pints now haha!
Was in the Gyngleboy the night it opened. They were giving away tokens for a free pint of beer. Ah, the Vine. There was a pub in Castlereagh street that also went, the Cricketers or the Gardeners, can't remember now. The Luftwaffe couldn't have done a worse job on Barnsley.
@@TheSecondof5 We always played the same three songs - Johnny Cash (Guitar Man) Maria Muldaur (Midnight at the Oasis) and Elvis (His Latest Flame). The Tarn was great in those days - The Castle Eden in The Globe was something else!
Very very interesting--good on you for those images--keep up the good work--you may be interested in A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE--sunday 28th September at the town hall --I have over 4 hours of archive films--
I'll bet it does. I haven't been back in years but the last time I did many of the shops and buildings outside the bus station had been painted in lurid, clashing colours and that big old building near the market looked like it had been hit by the Luftwaffe. Bits of steel debris were hanging off the side and it just looked generally untidy as the work on demolishing it seemed to be held up, for whatever reason. And then there were all those banners - Barnsley welcomes LGBTQ pride with the six coloured rainbow. Each to their own I suppose but it's not the Barnsley I knew, it's lost its soul.
God! The old bus station where the drivers had to reverse out. What a dump it all looked back then. Haven't been back there in years. Used to love having a walk around the Fleets, Smithies res and through those back fields all the way up to New Lodge.
Memories like this make me sad and happy in one foul swoop, thanks for the upload pal
