My 2 cents for the beginners: There are 2 crank positions. The first position will give you access to both shims on cylinder 1, outlet of cylinder 2, inlet of cylinder 3, outlet of cylinder 4, inlet of cylinder 5, and neither shim in cylinder 6. The second crank position gives you access to all of the other shims. It's worth noting that, you CANNOT turn the engine over without a valve shim in place, so make sure there is a valve shim in ALL valves before rotating the engine. My final thought is don't cheap out on the SST!!! Some are ok, mine isn't! I've had to heavily modify mine to make it work and even then, I dread using it. They may all look the same, but they are made to specific tolerances so you can compress the valve far enough to actually be able to remove the shim, and the body of the tool is specifically designed to fit between the head and the cam so you can actually be able to use it! My cheap one did none of these things correctly so buyers beware.
Thanks for the tips. This is why I can't understand why other sites, reddit etc. lock comments on topics, or moderators scold posters for commenting on old threads. Here we are 10 years from the initial post of this video, still sharing important info on the subject.
If the intake valve shims are the wrong size (too big) they can give you a knocking sound - it is basically exhaust coming back out the intake valve - dont run like that for long. the intake manifold will feel hot just after start up - not from normal engine heat - but from exhaust gas.
it depends on where the vehicle is sold, there are three possible locations, there are 3 locations listed in the EPC, two on the left side and one on the right. So it all depends on whether your truck is left and or right hand drive. If 12V it can have one battery on the front position left handside, if 24V (If still made) it can have 2 on the left in LHD vehicles. I will see what my electronic parts manual says - but I have to try to find it:)
Best and easiest way is to set engine at BOTTOM DEAD CENTRE with timing belt cover removed, once crank is at bottom dead centre, remove timing belt and check the valve clearances while turning the camshaft through a full rotation, once you have written down all clearances, pull cam out and set up each valve to correct shim hight, re install cam, turn cam to double check clearances, if ok turn back to bottom dead centre mark, re-install timing belt, and put engine back together. The reason for setting at bottom dead centre is because all 6 pistons (or 5 in 1pz) will be far enough down the bores so valves cannot contact the pistons. This is how it states to set clearances in the Toyota factory workshop manual
i have a 1hz and it has a problem i have put a new head on it and since it has been running it has had a big nocking nosie coming from the rocker cover now would that been caused by the vavle shims or something else
Is that so....then if I wanted to put double batteries for a single battery version (12v) Land Cruiser HZJ 79; What is the best place to install the secondary battery? Is it the right side of the engine bay or the left side of the engine bay behind the factory fitted battery? What will be the practical place of a RHD cruiser? Pls. advise me!
Thanks for the tutorial. Your calculation 2.93 + (0.3 - 0.4) = 2.83. I went to back your previous clearances measurements and there is no 0.3? Unless you using 1 valve which wasn't shown previously?
Thanks a lot for your quick reply.. I'm asking about a RHD vehicle. If it is a 12v do they have two batteries instead of one? if so what will be the placement? thx Sorry for disturbing!
In 2012 Land cruiser HZJ 79; what is the battery placement? (2battery models) one in left side of the engine bay and other one in right? or both are in left side of the engine bay? Are they 12V or 24V? Pls. help!!!
The tutorial is teriffic! I wonder where can one find the valve adjustment tool? I am from Nairobi, Kenya. I have looked around but am unable to get it even online. Any idea? Kerich.
I was really hoping you wouldn't be using the mythicaly, expensive Toyota SST... Kind of voids the whole tutorial thing, it's pretty easy when you have that!

Excellent video! Probably will have to do this with my HDJ81 equipped with the 1-HDT motor. Thank you!
excellent video. Best landcruiser tutorials on youtube.

@lexusfan100 It would sound like a diesel truck, the 1hz sounds smooth when running right - kinda like a car engine.
Thanks for your support!!

thats a good one . you can not be serious
I'm confused with the equation to find the new shim?
Buenas tardes como puedo hacer ya que el tdc del cigueñal no me coincide con el tdc de la bomba
Ya se puso en punto los ceros y los unos
Gracias ...
Great video mate.👍
how to set timing distributor on the on toyota land crouser
Hi I have no 1 cylinder at tdc but I find at no 6 one shim is compressed and the other has clearance. Is thjis correct$
yes 12 V, biggest battery I can fit, same size.
My 1pz tapets give tick tick sound while driving and it sounds clearly when im drive around footpath
And my 1pz is heavy on fuel too 😒
What country did the truck come from? There are many variables depending where the truck comes from - it could have 2 batteries, 1 batt, or 12/24 v.
Thank you very much for communicating so far.....Good luck.!!!
Really excellent video - well produced.
Great video thankyou. 👍

Thanks for watching!
Приспособление для отжатия клапанов отличное .
Great Tutorial can you tell me if the sst number is the shim set part number cheers

Hi Louis. I have the 2H engine, i believe it's a OHV motor, working with pushrods. Do i need to do this shim replacement for it too?
Válvula de óleo não apaga em relantim
can u do a video explaining the Valves adjustment with a FJ 60? it´ll be really cool!
Excellent video. Thank you very much!!

Kerich.
Some make their own tool - but it's tricky.
Very good job ....I hope I have the tools to work like this ....😣😣
ah ok that is easy - the left side, one in front of the other, I did the same thing, made my own large tray and they fit perfectly.
I'm pretty sure you just adjust the valves with a set nut on that one.
magnifico video
Hey mate, i'm in the US you know where i can find 1hz shims?
@kabodkhwaamkhid Thanks!
its so hard to say, they have many specs for many countries.
I was really hoping you wouldn't be using the mythicaly, expensive Toyota SST... Kind of voids the whole tutorial thing, it's pretty easy when you have that!
It is made in Japan and made for Asian market. I think they are sending the dubai spec here. I'm from Sri Lanka.
@dRMaBUseXIV Thanks Mate!

Using a magnet on any part of a valve train is very stupid.
