Hi Jean, Thank you for your generosity. I find your videos to be a great source to learn so much about the love of cross stitching and needlework. You have made a huge difference in my confidence and knowledge to make my stitching more pleasurable. I watch several tutorials that show “hauls” and new patterns to purchase. That is all fine but when I turn to you I get real information on how to be a better stitcher. Showing us the difference in threads and why we use them and all the other tips and info is a treasure to us. If my budget allowed I’d fly from Michigan to Florida for a class with you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of cross stitch - you answered my question on the difference between stranded floss and pearl cotton sizes - I want to make a pillow on 7 count aida of the 2023 prairie schooler and wanted to know how many strands of stranded floss to use some say 4 or 6 or use Pearl cotton #3 - thank you for showing the different threads - thanks for tip of separating the 6 stranded floss before use
I don't remember if I made this clear but pearl cotton is round and so though number 3 pearl cotton may be equal in overall weight to a number of strands of floss, the coverage will not be the same. For example, six floss strands stitched to lie side by side will cover more space than six strands of cotton that are twisted together. I hope this makes sense!

I think the Shepherds Bush stockings may be an exception. They are stitched with #5 Perle Cotton on 18 count linen. I think it is stitched over two with 4 strands,which is unusual.

Very Informative. I've always wondered about Pearle cotton. Could you please tell me where Sulky thread fits in especially the 12 wt? I have seen several flosstubers using it. Since I prefer to use one strand of floss on at least 18 ct Aida (haven't made the transition to evenweaves yet), I thought that Sulky might be a viable alternative to floss especially since it would be more cost effective on large projects
Sulky 12 weight should be the same as 12 weight pearl cotton and I feel that a 12 PC is the same as 2 strands of regular cotton floss (number 25) so I would say it would be a good alternative when you would normally use 2 strands of floss.

Happy New Year to you and your family. I love how your videos teach me about the craft of cross stitch. The information you shared about threads was so interesting. My goal this year is to get my threads organized. I have decided to switch from bobbins to thread drops. I may switch from DMC to Cosmo. Of late, my DMC thread seems to be coming apart. I thought maybe being on bobbins was creating a stress point where the kinks are even though I use your idea of a damp sponge to straighten the threads out before stitching. But I have stitched from skeins just bought and not wound on a bobbin and have experienced the same issue of coming apart in the middle of the length of thread. My ground cloth is not stiff or rough and I don’t stitch with lengths longer than from my wrist to my elbow. Maybe a quality issue?
DMC quality is definitely changed from what I experienced in the 80's and 90's. Try Cosmo and let me know what you think. The biggest difference is in the black and I have a black and white Cosmo assortment in my Etsy shop so that would be a good place to start.

Happy New Year, Jean. Your videos are always so informative. I have been stitching for a long time and I still learn something from your programs. I was recently going through some older cross stitch magazines, and I found an article about you and a piece you designed. It was fun to look back to some earlier projects and how some of my interests in stitching have changed and how some have come back full circle. Your ega project coming up for Florida, is that a project that could be shared with other chapters? I am the program chairperson for my local chapter in Portland Oregon.

Happy New Year, Jean! I'm planning (ha!) to take my files to Office Depot tomorrow to print out trial sizes of my Joy, in letter and half-letter size. Then I'll try them out in a TUL set of covers and send pix once i've decided.
This was a really interesting video. I had never noticed the 25 on my cotton floss skeins before. I don't have any perle cotton close to hand, but I looked at a couple of spools of Coats & Clark Button & Craft thread and couldn't Identify a comparable code on them, unless either MX or CA00011 is meaningful. Those appear on both spools.
I see someone else asked about Sulky 12 wt. vs. perle cotton 12 wt. I'd be curious about that, too as I've been planning to experiment with 12 wt Sulky Blendable (eventually) on Long Dog Samplers' Pandemic.
A 12-weight Sulky floss should be the same as a 12-weight pearl cotton. It's a nice choice since it's about the same as two strands of what we now know is a number 25 floss.
Good information! So is that why the loop method is sometimes not the best... because of removing one thread at a time and then putting the two threads back together?

I love, love, love the loop method! I mention the pulling out single strands and putting them back together for those who stitch with more than 2 strands, or are stitching with an overdye, or prefer not to use the loop method. I am so glad you asked this question ... it tells me I need to clarify it next week!

Some times I need to substitute DMC 6-strand floss to get a better color match. How many of those DMC strands do you recommend to best match the size of the #12? Thank you!
I love the Valdani variegated pearl cottons! I would use 2 strands of floss in place of a 12 weight pearl cotton.
