- From the Academy-Award winning film, Django Unchained.
In 1858 Texas, brothers Ace and Dicky Speck drive a group of shackled black slaves on foot. Among them is Django, sold off and separated from his wife Broomhilda von Shaft, a house slave who speaks German and English. They are stopped by Dr. King Schultz, a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter seeking to buy Django for his knowledge of the three outlaw Brittle brothers, overseers at the plantation of Django's previous owner and for whom Schultz has a warrant. When Ace refuses to sell Django to Schultz and levels his gun at him, Schultz kills him and shoots Dicky's horse in order to pin him to the ground. Schultz insists on paying a fair price for Django before leaving the other slaves to kill Dicky. Schultz offers Django his freedom and $75 in exchange for help tracking down the Brittles.
Schultz and Django concoct a plan to buy a Mandingo fighting slave from Calvin Candie, owner of Candieland Plantation and Broomhilda for a token sum. On the way to the plantation, Django witnesses Candie order his slave trackers' dogs to maul to death a runaway slave D'Artagnan.
After his ruse is discovered and Dr. Schultz is killed, Django is sent to be work in a limestone quarry for the rest of his life, but he escapes and returns to Candieland to avenge Dr. Schultz and D'Artangan. He ambushes the slave trackers.
Tarantino uses the plot device of actors doing something in rhythm like the ticking of a clock. This foreshadows that their time is running out and that bloodshed will ensue. - Розваги
I love the small jittering with his sunglasses when the scene is ending. Nobody is immune to seeing something that horrible.

Tarantino. He is next level. I at first doubted. But he is one of the greats. I honestly always am fascinated by his stuff even after dozens of watches. Very few directors pull off whatever it is he is pulling off.

The slave trackers laughing about the poor devil not knowing what "reimburse" means when they probably didn't know either. Also amusing how Candy liked to poke fun at him for being uneducated while he was basically a phony intellectual. Liked to go by "Monsieur Candy" but couldn't speak French. Named one of his slaves after a 3 Musketeers character, but didn't know Alexandre Dumas was black. He just surrounded himself with people who sucked up to him to make him feel intelligent.

D’artagnan actor is slept on. His voice, his mannerisms, his crying. Dude is on screen for like 5 minutes and delivers such a believably defeated and terrified performance. Quentin doesn’t miss with casting ever.

I love that Django took the time to avenge some poor guy he didn't even know. Shows that he did care, even if he had to pretend he didn't. As a former slave, his death probably enraged him.
They would've probably tracked him down. No way they let Candie go out like that and not seek revenge. I'd say he was just tying up potential loose ends.

And this right here sums up the brutality of slavery in one gut-wrenching scene. I remain convinced, though, that it wasn't just sadism that Candie was going for here - he also was testing just how ruthless Django really was watching one of Candie's slaves get *mauled to death in front of him.* The doc just about broke their cover. Django reestablished it.
For the slave trackers, of course, it was pure sadistic glee watching a man get ripped limb from limb and eaten alive.
When he came back later to slaughter them all, he made damn well sure they knew why they were being shot like dogs.

There's no dignity at all, cowering while dogs rip you apart.
Think of how game hunters have no problem killing animals, but get uneasy about animal cruelty.
The English did the same and worse to the scotts for a very long time.
This isn't an accurate portrayal of most slavery either trans Atlantic or the Arab slave trade. There are recordings done with the last generation of slaves you can listen to them describe the average slave life on the plantation. It is basically equivelent to the life of a serf under feudalism. Only difference is they could be sold to other masters.

The anger, the pain, the hatred, you can see it all, carefully concealed by a mask that can be mistaken for apathy. If Django had looked over to watch that slave getting eaten alive he might have broken character, so looking at candie and feigning indifference is the best thing he can do here. And it works. Candie is clearly testing him, but Django doesn’t blink and turns the tables on him to make it seem like he’s an unimpressed customer having his time wasted. And Candie, not as persistent in his suspicion as a sharper man might be, buys it.

@@delboy-su3wfthey’re supposed to be slavers. No slaver would pay such an exorbitant sum ($500 was worth over $18,000 in today’s money) for a slave who can’t work. So Candie would realize Django and Schultz aren’t slavers, and their plan is ruined.

Don’t think I realized this when I first saw the movie: by shutting up Cristoph Walz, Django isn’t just protecting their cover story, he’s also trying to help D’Artangon. It really pisses off Candy when Walz tries to intervene, clearly out of sympathy for D’Artangon. Django can tell that he’s drastically increasing the pain of D’artsngon’s death by opening his mouth. Candy does the nastiest thing he can on hand just to piss of Walz to get intel for their upcoming negotiation and to test Django. It might not have been as bad if Walz had kept his mouth shut.
But HOW is he trying to help D’Artagnan?

There was a chance of Walz says nothing, Candy just tells the slavers to hang him or beat him to death or something. After Walz speaks… it’s gonna be the worst possible thing on hand.

You could say it didnt go well for the guy who got ripped apart by dogs. Candy was testing him, and django won in my opinion. Dont give 2 fucks about a random person, when his wife is on the line. If they would have saved the slave, it would have been suspicious. Django played it right.

Except it didn't "go well" based on something so stupid, Shultz shooting Candy instead of shaking his hand and leaving peacefully, something his 'character' would have done. But not tarantino. So he had Shultz, who was cold and calculating, get what, mad about shaking the man's hand? OK, if you say so.

I always love Tarantino reels, and this is no exception. It is a masterpiece. No one in this movie mailed it in. This, and The Revenant, were what put Leonardo DiCaprio in the generational-actor category for me. Once Upon a Time In Hollywood just sealed it further. Jaime Foxx and Christoph Waltz were already there, and of course, Samuel L Jackson had been there seemingly forever. Even Don "Big Daddy"Johnson was perfection. If you've not seen this movie, just do it.

Leonardo DiCaprio, way before this movie, was head and shoulders above Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz. Well, maybe not Jamie, because his depiction of Ray Charles is one of the most incredible portrayals of anyone ever, but Leonardo DiCaprio had a resume before 2012 that 95% of the people in Hollywood could only dream of. He is one of the best EVER. Jamie Foxx isn't close, and Christoph Waltz isn't even in the state the ballpark is in.

i love the scene @ 1:18 where it shows two very different people & two very different emotions. you can see the disgust in the assistants eyes & the real disgust in the bounty hunters eyes. very shook & disgusted but still looks very eager to do something bout it. just shows you how much you can can perceive just from a few second’s of someone’s face

Supposedly she knew Django from the past and when they got separated her face got fucked up but the movie would of been over 4 hours if he didn't cut it all out.

Ngl I was curious about her too. Like why she always have her face covered? I actually thought she was a bounty hunter as well. She definitely seemed different from the entire group and looked like she had her own story.
i feel like any more revelation about her character would be gratuitous. her character is mysterious, and she adds depth to the tracker gang. Tarantino typically includes small characters in his stories that don't get much explanation to add a layered richness to his worlds; we as the audience are invited to come up with our own interpretations (ie Mr. Blue in Reservoir Dogs, The Wolf in Pulp Fiction, the bartender and barmaid in Inglorious Basterds).
IIRC there was supposed to be a side-story involving her (especially with her being played by Zoë Bell, another actress Tarantino worked with before) but it got cut out entirely, probably not to distract from the story.

This movie was just absolutely brilliant. I remember when it first came out I wasn’t too interested in it, but watching it for the first time a few years ago I was completely blown away. The performances of every single cast member was brilliant, the story was brilliant, the scenes were brilliant. It had such a strange mix of dread, irony, and quirkiness I didn’t know what was going on
Candy's death is genuinely one of those moments my soul celebrated as a viewer. He more than deserved that shit on the same level as King Joffrey from GoT
Shot to the heart, and Dr. King Schultz was to blame!
Yeah… pity the film goes to shit after his death. Until then, it’s a 10/10 for me, but after it becomes “too Tarantino”.

So many emotions, and they all felt real that made me feel anger, disgust, and sadness. Tarantino is a man that knows my soul.
I always wished Tarantino would bring out the full length version of this...money could be made back just by streaming it. Put all the subplots back in and have a four hour movie. The same for the even better "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood". I heard him say he intended to do this with the latter film, but never heard anything else about it. Obviously he is busy with other things, but it sure would be great to see the additional footage, scenes and subplots for both of these films.

This sequence was one of the most powerful in the movie. Django wasn't going to let one half dead slave stand between him and rescuing his woman, but in time he settled the score and then some.
The fact that Candie kneeled down shows he cares. Property is important. And how sadistic he is to present some ‘hope’

Jamie Foxx’s performance as Django, the badass bounty hunter is really superb.
Jamie should try auditioning for the role of a bounty hunter or a Mandolorian in Star Wars!!!
He'd never do that role. SW scripts are horrendous without a hint of a dimensional character.
He'd also need an ensemble to work with, otherwise he's just in a film with shitty actors, most of which have zero depth of skill. Many of them just "get in the moment" when performing the scenes, rather than doing the hard work and setting the tone.

It shows you that he was gonna die regardless when he says “You may not win, but you sure can fight.” knowing that Candi’s fights are to the death.

It was not okay with him sending the dogs onto the poor man. But he realized he couldn’t take action then, he made a promise that whatever candy did to these men, he would take revenge 10 fold.
One of the most uncomfortable parts of this movie I don't see a lot of people talk about is the fact that Django is playing the role of very real black slavers.

The tenseness in this moment, knowing he wants to kill the owner but there's simply too many guns against 2, so they have to relent and allow one atrocity to blend long enough to get their revenge. A terrible situation, a bad moral dilemma, a mission for the greater good.

Movie is a masterpiece
Funny Fact: the photograph the woman tracker was looking was suppose to be her and Django (apparently) and she had a way bigger role in the movie. A whole backstory and fight sequence was suppose to take place. You actually see that he never shoots at her in th e back and the audience only presumes she was killef off.

That woman with the bandana always made me wonder what her deal was. I kinda wish we got to see more of her.
She died at the end, they just didn't show it, but she was inside that same house everyone got shot in by Django, implying that she got taken out too.

Have you not read wtf I said?! I KNOW she died, but she DID NOT DIE ON CAM! I watched the whole scene with no edits just now to confirm once again, she did not die on screen.
And as guys, instinctively, we focus more on the woman, but don't think just because we do, she shouldn't get what is deserved.
Evil is evil, and I could care less about her dying, so don't go assuming sh**.

Second: I responded to the right guy, she did die on cam. When you see it zoom out from her you can see she's the one in the back of the room looking at photos. When the shooting starts she goes to grab something (perhaps a knife) and she gets shot in the end trying to throw it.

Slave tracker sounds like an old guy my uncle hired as "groundskeeper" or maintenance guy on his property in Nevada. Found the guy living in a camper in the middle of the desert with no electricity or running water. Gave the guy the single wide trailer on his property and said as long as he didnt damage anything on the property he could stay as long as he wanted without having to pay. Nowadays the guy has his own property in the same town and even some livestock. Was a cool guy. Reason he sounded that was was a mix of barely any teeth and alcohol.

Really, one only needs to look at Dumas' photo to see he was black.

I can't remember if it was Jammie or Samuel but they did an interview. During the interview they were asked about this movie. They told a story about Leo always apologizing about using the N word . They said he walked up and said " look I'm really sorry and would like to apologize". The one doing the interview said " no mother F'er your gonna pay for this one". Just to F with Leo. They said the color drained from him.
