But in football terms. Which is more important. The scoring opportunity comes only a few times. And many strikers can finish them. And no doubt Ronaldo is a great striker without being a striker. Messi increases team chances to score goals by attracting defence and then creating chances for others by passing or dribbling. On free kicks he can directly score too. So that's a more important part of the game than just scoring goals. Messi is the best playmaker and one of the best scorers. While he is one of the best dribblers and the list goes on. He takes few touches and once he gets the ball he makes game change for his team. The goal against Mexico is an example or the assist to Molina against Netherlands.

I don't think it was just about a World cup's trophy, rather it was his performance, they way he has led Argentina in this world cup at the age of 35, that's a big thing to be noted. My 2 cents on this: Whenever Messi will be mentioned, Ronaldo will be mentioned in the same sentence. There is no shame being 2nd best to someone who's born to play football (Messi). He's natural genius and for Ronaldo being compared to a natural genius through sheer hardwork and some talent is an achievement in itself. Yes Messi is the GOAT, always was but Ronaldo is up there with him.

Even before I was onto football, I have always liked Messi more than Ronaldo (from their highlights). Then I questioned myself as to why Messi and Ronaldo are considered to be of equal caliber because for me, the quality of Messi's highlights were a notch better than Ronaldo's. After I started watching football, I found out the reason.
It's simple. You can't disregard performances. No matter how unfair I feel about the debate, I can't ignore that Ronaldo did everything he could to be on the same pedestal as Messi. He may not be the most aesthetically pleasing but he does the job. He is clinical and ambitious. No matter how brilliant Messi is, Madrid fans can't ignore Ronaldo for the memories he gave to the club.

You can respect both of them. You can appreciate both of them. Fact is, Messi and Ronaldo have both been shoulder to shoulder in their own respective ways for as long as anyone can remember. I have fought for 10 years bro but its over now, credit where credit is due. Was a casual up until 2017 watched the wc final 2014 and that made me happy even in 2015 and 16 he bottled copa, that was the thing that seperated him from ronaldo. I am a big ronaldo fan. Remember playing pes 2013 at literally 7 years of age and scoring so many goals with him, my elder brother telling me that he has won a ballon d or and whatnot , i was an ozil fan and was supporting germany in 2014, but since 2017 i became serious, watched most games and I saw ronaldo absolutely dominating ucl, i fell in love. But ever since his last 2 ucls he just, i dont know ruined his career. He was a freak till 35,36 and i believe he still can do it, but this proved something. That ego will be the death of you, yes confidence is important but ego isn’t, messi too has ego but he doesn’t put it out publicly so he is smarter mentally for keeping it inside him and only showing glimpses of it when needed. I watched ronaldo play against switzerland in lusail and when he scored the offside goal me and my brother hugged and we were feeling so much joy. Thats who ronaldo is for me, he gives me joy. As far as the debate is concerned, i dont think i am gonna indulge in any, because messi went crazy this time. But ronaldo for me will always be my goat, although stats wise etc messi has taken the throne. I think its not over for ronaldo and he can make one last comeback but I dont if that will be possible. I don't care, nobody has ever inspired me as Cristiano, he is undisputed goat for me which will never change but it doesn't mean that I don't enjoy messi's football. The single argument I have is that Messi has more goals than a playmaker could ever dream of, he has more assists that a top tier striker can possibly have.
Even having a single stat out of the two like having 792 goals or having 350 assists would have already made him top 5 when combined with his achievements but the scary thing is that he has both the stats of an all time greatest striker and an all time greatest playmaker while playing deep positions like CAM or midfielder.
Imagine you are one of the best goalscorer, best playmaker,best assister, best dribbler, excellent at creating chances, key passes, great vision, free kicks, penalties etc. Then, definitely you're the best of all time.
