Agreed that adding serious computational photography to the M43 system would be a huge step forward for a system that already has great, compact bodies and an enormous line-up of beautiful, small lenses

Hi DPReview, my advice to you (hehehe) is to make a study of what Olympus/OM System users think is important. I can mention a whole list, like ergonomics, look and feel and build quality but the one thing is of course portability. OM System managed to cram a lot of better technology and better weather sealing in just about the same size of body. I think OM System has listened very well to the whishes of the Olympus users (higher ISO, lower noise level, more dynamic range, better weather sealing and so on) and started off really well. And it is only the start.

@@ricseet4095 I own an Olympus EM1 and can't find a reason to upgrade to this new camera. Especially on the video side of things Olympus is hopelessly behind my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. I think Olympus could be a major contender in video but it would require a dedicated timecode port, keeping proper timecode, internal RAW for video, and sadly four years after the release of the Blackmagic Camera for $1295 ... Olympus still can't deliver that.

@@ricseet4095 I own the original EM1 (so the MK1) and it's great for photography even in 2022. With video workflow (the time involved not just in shooting but preparing for the edit are essential). The best video requires good audio so you need an external way to record it and then a good way to bring all that together. Don't know what kind of video you want to shoot but if it involves actors or someone being interviewed I highly recommend the Tentacle Sync products. Track E is an awesome Lavalier mic and 32 bit audio (kind of like having RAW audio -- you can make someone louder or quieter without any noise) recorder that uses time code. If you use Track Es for your talent and then a Sync E with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K importing and having all your video and audio footage synced is a dream because of time code which is standard in all professional film and tv productions for that reason.

You are comparing the OM1 against the A1 and Z9? A 2100€ Camera against a 5500€ and 7000€ Camera? I agree that the upgrades could or should be better, but I think that would be better to compare the OM1 against other Cameras like the Z6ii, R6 or A7iv. I think that the people are very unfair with the OM exactly like they were with Olympus. OM doesn’t need more quality or more technology! They need more support from UA-camrs… and they need to change the public perception about their products. Because it seems that doesn’t matter how good their products are… for the UA-camrs they should be better. We are talking here about a 2199€ Camera with characteristics that no other Camera has.

Cameras have really gone in a „go big or go home“ territory which is unfortunate for micro four thirds. The GH6 will without a doubt compared to the A7S III the most even though it may be cheaper than even the A7 IV and completely blows it out of the water in terms of video specs.

They also need to stop focusing so much on wildlife photography and encourage other genres, especially in their visionary programs, if the want to get more pro users. Their cameras are perfect for photojournalism and documentary work, sports and most other genres. I shoot live music with my EM-1ii, and that is usually the preserve of full frame cameras, but I’ve found it works as well, if not better than my old Canon 6D, which is also 20mp.

@@chrispatmore8944 while I agree with you, if marketing wants something interesting and immediately desirable to demonstrate the improved strengths of this new camera, it makes sense that they’re going to do so through travel, wildlife, and experiential photography. Documentary and street-as interesting as they are for photographic purists and documentarians-won’t have the same immediate appeal, at least not at announcement time. Perhaps some of their visionaries have a specialty in documentary and street work, which will be showcased at a later point.
One thing wildlife photography does illustrate very well is the camera’s ability to focus accurately upon unpredictable subjects in environments that aren’t necessarily photography-friendly. So I get it that they are using this approach for marketing purposes.

The sensor in those cameras is already superior to FF sensors. You don't have 2 stop advantage, it is at best 0.3-0.6 stops at the same ISO. You get 1-1.5 stops benefit only with the base ISO vs base ISO, and that is like ISO 50 vs ISO 200 or ISO 100 vs ISO 200. And that is where the win is as you rarely get to use low iso in dim light, and when you can use low ISO it is in bright light where sensor benefit isn't really there. The equivalence hypothesis claims 2 stops difference. In reality it is 0.3-0.6 stops difference, and that is nothing at all.

All good points. Fully support the computational photography opportunity in M43. A big attraction of the system is the compact format with lens interchangeability. At the end of the day, the only thing that comes between the subject and the sensor is the lens and this is where M43 can really add to its value proposition. OM (and Panasonic) offer excellent optics, all in compact forms that make getting out and about with a camera enjoyable. This too adds to the value, as it is also an axiom that the camera that is convenient to have with you is the one that you will use.

    As an Olympus user:
I don't want more megapixels, 20mp is already plenty for general use and the handheld high res mode gives me more than I'd ever need for the landscapes I shoot. Lower storage requirements is more important to me
Yessss please work together with Panasonic more, I own some of their lenses that Olympus doesn't make. I'd love the ois and ibis to communicate and the aperture rings to work.
Please please please push computational photography. Make it automatic like a smartphone (with manual overrides). This is why I invested in m43, Olympus has a huge lead here. This is where they build their niche. Make the whole experience a bit more smartphone like too, better touch controls and easier to understand. Become the brand of hobbyists, adventures & wildlife shooters.
Also please fix the only thing I hate about my E-M1iii, at the very least put this in the om-1. LET THEM RECORD VIDEO TO BOTH CARDS. Why isn't this possible???

It's an 80mp sensor which produces 20mp images. The final image will have more bit depth than the previous 20mp sensor. 16mp was absolutely fine, 20mp is more than enough. I understand we gotta nit pick otherwise an excellent camera, but as an m4/3 shooter for the past 10 years. The megapixel is literally the least important feature to me. I would be fine even with 12mp. More megapixels wouldn't improve the image quality, it would only make the files more cumbersome and slower to process.

Add the same functionality to something like the OM5III if they can. Any travel or adventure camera needs to be smaller if your traveling long distances in the mountains. OM5III getting close ( in lieu I often use my RX100 7 and GoPro) but the new OM1 looks like a great camera for road trips and local parks, currently my G9 works well here too. Very tempting, but will never be a perfect camera for all uses. Looking forward to seeing Panasonic’s GH6 next week; similar with better/ enhanced video options?

There are some really good and valid points here, and I agree with much of what’s said. However, I do feel that the request for more megapixels is… a bit overblown. Yes, I do get it. Some people do need higher resolution pictures, and also, more pixels = more ability to crop. But… all things considered, 20MP is ample for most users, especially considering everything else that this camera can do. Honestly, I think 20MP is a sweet spot that balances useful resolution against manageable file size. Much higher and the files start to be a pain to work with, with very few real benefits most of the time. Also, this new sensor delivers lower noise and better low-light performance in a system that was commonly criticised in those areas. Should OMDS really have upped the resolution and retained those negatives, as opposed to delivering better results at a resolution that’s ideal for most users? I do understand the desire for higher resolutions among DPReview types, but honestly, I think OMDS took the right decision here, even though it cost them Brownie points in terms of potential marketing and left them open to exactly the criticism we’re seeing. I personally don’t want much higher resolutions than 20MP as I have no use for them and they come with many disadvantages. The only way I could imagine being persuaded to backtrack on that view is if the camera had a REALLY high-res sensor (let’s say 80MP or 100MP) but downsampled every image to deliver a much lower resolution final picture (of, say, 20MP or so) with all the unwanted noise processed out. And if you absolutely needed the high-res raw original, you could get it from the buffer (but it’d probably be hideously noisy). So that’d be a bit like high-res shot mode in reverse… and some smartphones already do this kind of thing. I can see it as being a viable approach for future OMDS cameras, but for now… I like the decisions taken for the OM-1.

So, if OM will become a gadget (smart gadget) like was described at start of the clip, then for sure I will change the system. Because I choose the Olympus as tool for making photo, not as gadget making something/somehow beatiful images.
MFT give enough blur when I need. There are no need to compete with bigger sensor at this part.
Low light performing and quick precise autofocus with result of sharp images is more than enough for me.

Staying at 20 megapixels doesn't bother me at all. I just love that they switched over to the stacked sensor for faster readout and better high ISO performance.
Unfortunately for them, the GH6 is on the horizon, and it will probably have 24 megapixels along with those other things.
As far as shallow depth of field, there are affordable f1.7 and f1.8 primes for Micro Four Thirds. My Olympus 45mm f1.8 does a great job with this. The Sigma 56mm f1.4 is even better, and that's not too pricey. The quality of the bokeh is also quite nice.
I hear about problems with full-frame cameras focusing on eyelashes instead of pupils, but all I want is to have my subject in focus and the background out of focus, and that's very doable with inexpensive lenses for Micro Four Thirds. If you want even shallower, Olympus has a line of f1.2 primes. Do we really need anything shallower than that?
With regard to playing nicely with Panasonic, I completely agree. But we also need to include making DFD (flawed though it might be) work with OM lenses.
The Live ND feature would be perfect and even game-changing for video if they would just enable that. If the Sony FS5 could do electronic automatic ND years ago, why can't OM do it now?

I switched from canon 5d MK IV to GH5s & G9 and absolutely love the platform. My 5D mk iv had noise banding issues ( very common problem with canon sensors which are only highlighted once you try to raise exposure in post). Long story short the move to the M43 platform was the best change I ever made. I have since convinced several of my canon friends to switch over to Lumix / Olympus and they are absolutely loving it. The G9 is the most versatile camera I've ever owned. I've travelled with it through ultra humid tropical jungles (Fiji) and freezing cold of Mt Ruapehu (New Zealand) and so far it has not missed a beat. The canon will not perform as well in the cold or the extreme heat and it's video capabilities and dynamic range are laughable. My Sigma Fp has a phenomenally better sensor than the canon as evident from my astro shoots. The thing I like about my Lumix cameras is the fact that Panasonic put so much of improvements/new features with nearly every firmware upgrade whereas you can rest assured this is the lowest priority with canon. I will have have a loan of the OM-1 when it gets released here in New Zealand and put it through it's paces. I like the fact that the OM-1 has a 4-Stack BSI sensor which if should in theory translate to better dynamic range and better images. The one thing I do not agree with is the polethera of computational & AI technologies being implemented in cameras. It kinda kills the passion for really learning photography and developing the art of taking good photographs (in M mode.....) My 2c worth. Thank you OM System for breathing new life into the M43. One of the most amazing benefits of the M43 ecosystem is the fact that so many lenses can be adapted for use on this system.

As far as Megapixels the theoretical maximum for a 4/3 sensor using the 150-400mm f/4.5 at f/4.5 without diffraction would be a sensor of 7,452 x 5,589, or 41.6MP rounded off. This is with green light at 550nm and an acceptable diffraction of 2.5 pixels.
This calculation got me thinking. I posted some of this on Dpreview also. What if we average 450nm Blue light, 550nm Green light, and 650nm Red light calculations and come up with a maximum diffraction limited megapixel count for a 4/3 sensor system. Here are the numbers for different f-stops when averaging all 3 wavelengths on a 4/3 sensor system.
    f/1.2 = 626.6MP
    f/1.4 = 460.3MP
    f/2.8 = 115.1MP
    f/3.5 = 73.7MP
    f/4.0 = 56.4MP
    f/4.5 = 44.6MP
    f/5.6 = 28.8MP
    f/6.3 = 22.7MP
    f/6.7 = 20.1MP
So, with the average of all three wavelengths we see that the consumer lens with the maximum f/6.7 aperture at the telephoto end maxes out at the current 20MP resolution currently utilized by Olympus. However, at the pro end there is quite a bit of room for a megapixel boost. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @DragonfireRC
      @DragonfireRC 2 роки тому +1

Thought about this some more. Lenses to resolve more megapixels on a 4/3 sensor is more problematic. Here are some examples of lenses with resolution in line pairs/millimeter, with the sharpest being the Olympus 17mm f/1.2 Pro.
      Olympus 17mm f/1.2 Pro @2.8 98.6lp/mm is the sharpest = 37.8MP Resolved
      Olympus 45mm f/1.2 Pro 96lp/mm = 35.8MP Resolved
      Olympus 300mm f/4 Pro only 73lp/mm = 20.7MP Resolved (Bad Sample? Don't know)
      Olympus 75mm f/1.8 82lp/mm = 26.1MP
So, we really need outstanding lenses to get to 35MP or so. Don't think we will see any improvement at 40MP and beyond without some kind of super lenses near 100lp/mm or higher. You would need a lens resolving 110lp/mm to resolve 47MP in a 4/3 sensor.

Actually, for most occasions, practically any photography which is not aimed to be printed much larger than letter size or DIN A4 (what is probably 99+ % of all photography) 16 MP on a MFT sensor is more than enough pixels. Olympus' approach to offer a 50 MP mode when you need it is quite an ingenious compromise. Or in other words: I don't need more than 20 MP.
A better collaboration between Olympus and Panasonic would be a really good thing. I think, both companies and of course all customers would profit from that massively.

Hope you read this Chris and Jordan -
Having interviewed the Panasonic camera division marketing manager the reason there is no compatibility with respect to in lens stabilization is that it was not written into the original MFT specification. Once Panasonic developed their internal specification it would have been a violation of the Sherman Anti Trust act to just copy it into the specification. Now the only way it can get incorporated is if the non Panasonic and Olympus members of the MFT association write a specification which does not favor either manufacturer but may be compatible with both existing.
OM systems next camera, which they should do soon, is use Sony's existing 45mp MFT sensor in the OM-1 body yielding a OM-1R. Perfect sensor for animal and portrait photography. Since the OM-1 body is too small to dissipate heat , lacks the processing power and battery and space for the required CF Express sockets it should be limited to 4K60. Maybe a OM-1X which does 8K30 with thst sensor (OM-1H?).

All the people shooting the 150-400 f/4.5 would want to add it to their collection for low light and everyone with a 300mm f/4 would want to upgrade to it to get more reach with the teleconverter engaged and an extra stop of light without it, and it probably wouldn't be much larger or heavier than the 300mm f/4, so I think that would be an extremely popular lens.
Now that they've become competitive in terms of autofocus, perhaps that could be followed with a 400mm f/2.8 and 300mm f/2 that could be much smaller than their cumbersome full frame counterparts while giving the same depth of field and potentially better low light performance.
The 100mm f/2.8 2x macro lens will be revolutionary as well, since that will effectively be a 200mm 4x macro lens considering the crop factor, yet it will probably be considerably smaller than Nikon's 200mm macro. Perhaps they could continue to capitalize on their small sensor for macro work by adding a 14mm f/2 macro or a 12-25mm macro zoom lens.
A sharp 200mm f/4 prime lens with a modest price tag that is compatible with teleconverters could be an excellent compliment to any combination of their f/4 zoom lenses and would be perfect for soccer moms and dads, but also useful for professional wildlife photographers who need the lightest possible setup for really strenuous hikes in remote areas.
A 100mm f/1.4 prime that could be used with teleconverters would be great for weddings, events, and sports, especially indoor sports, and would give full frame bokeh without the size and weight of a 70-200mm f/2.8.
If OM System was to do those things, I think they could become very competitive and profitable.

I have been using the Olympus camera along with my Nikon full frame and APSC camera since 2016 (Nikon since 1974) and own three including the fairly new Mark III. My thoughts are better lower and upper end ISO low noise performance, depth of field, at least 2 stops of dynamic range and a 30mp stacked sensor. I think their price points are good but that their marketing sucks and they need to improve. When someone ask me what camera to buy for hiking and outdoors stuff, the EM 10 comes to mind. They could improve all the lower end models weather sealing.

Isn’t it more like their marketing “sucked”-past tense? Seems in the months leading up to this camera, and since it’s announcement their marketing has been 2-3x what Olympus was doing with their cameras. Olympus was never this on-fire about new releases. But the new company seems to better understand not only the need for better hardware, but also the impact that education and social media can have on the effort to build awareness and let people know why this is a desirable camera. They’ll continue to improve. But so far it’s a good start.

Would make life a lot easier, especially when using Lightroom mobile on the go, where you can’t simply stack pictures. While at it, apps across the board should be updated to support raw file and high res video transfer if they don’t already. Hate that I’m screwed when I forget my SD card reader.

If the OM-1 is capable of reading out all 80M photodiodes on the sensor at once, then since each pixel is basically an AF sensor, it would have full resolution focus data, which could in theory be used for almost perfect fake bokeh, since the camera knows to exactly what degree each pixel is defocused and could proportionally blur that exact part of the image.

It is a shame that micro 4/3 is not a true standard. That was suppose to be the big game changer for this system. Then they just became like al the other camera makers. Small incremental updates, but then cripple other stuff. I wold buy the OM-1, but there is just enough improvement for the bird photography I do as a hobby to justify buying the camera. Some will argue that their is enough and that is fine if you happy with it. I am not, will keep using my E-M1x. Will keep saving my money and see what comes out nest year. Interesting to hear your point of view. Whilst I agree with some of your suggestions, I do have to disagree on others.
Most Olympus/OM System users see this as a big leap forward, much bigger than the progress from the E-M1 Mark II to III.
Fake digital bokeh, you say? No thanks. There's a big difference between using the camera's computational abilities to achieve shots within the laws of physics and adding fake digital effects. The whole shallow depth of field not being achievable in MFT is a myth. Furthermore, a lot of photography requires more DoF not less. Besides, a completely blurred out background is a look that became a cliché in the last decade and it being rejected by progressive photographers. Smartphone panoramas are less likely to succeed than what is achievable in specialist software on computers with more processing power. I prefer stitching images in post-processing.
Also, High Res mode is quickly accessible through the super control panel or the drive mode button on top of the camera; you don't have to delve into the menus to find it as you suggest. Moreover, it is possible to have one of the custom modes set to any combination of settings, so switching from bird in flight photography to a high definition landscape just requires turning a dial a notch.
I agree that closer working with Panasonic would help the user, but the lenses are far more interchangeable than say Nikon, Sony and Canon. Would you propose that they all use the same mount? Wouldn't that be great?
Personally, I am glad that it is a 20 MP sensor. It's all I need. After all you only require around 8 MP to print A3 size at photo quality. Additionally, the file size of bigger sensors is ridiculous, and I don't want that. The huge increase in dynamic range and the superior noise reduction in camera is a real boon.
    Thanks for the interesting video.

Well in terms of noise reduction, AI tools like TopazLabs Denoise AI and DXO Deep Prime AI are making many of the older lower sensor cameras feel like new. Give it a try. You can shoot up to 6400 - 8000 ISO with MF3 and get super clean files. You do lose color fidelity, detail and dynamic range at high ISO compared to base ISO, but that is the case for all camera unless they feature dual native ISO mode. But compared to previous methods, this new AI technology for cleaning noise is giving new life to older cameras or small sensor cameras. So I think some of the demand can be offloaded to post production. I would therefore prefer the companies do things we can't in post production. Features in the camera, ergonomics, battery life etc.

Therefore 20 Mpixels is equivalent of 80 Mpixels in that regard. That’s a lot of optical resolution to ask from a lens.

    • @overnightdelivery

Yeah I like 20 Megapixels but do not want any more than that. File sizes are already pretty large and lower noise is ALWAYS a good thing.

  • @VariTimo

It’s so frustrating you guys not getting resolution properly. At this sensor size any meaningful increase in resolution would be a decrease in IQ at the magnifications used by most MFT users. As high res sensors get better 20MP is also always going to be better at capturing cleaner images with more DR. Yes when you have a high res full frame sensor you’ll see about the same amount of noise at normal magnifications as you’d do with a lower res sensor. But why throw away the highs DR and color fidelity when you don’t need to print large or crop much? Please both of you just watch Part Two of Steve Yedlin’s Resolution Demo again.

totally agree. I don't see the OM-1 camera somewhere near "wow". Too much wording, too much wrapping, not enough content. Exactly what you said, just for psychological reasons a tiny bit more resolution would have been nice. Lets see if the leaked 25MP sensor of the Panasonic will be true - sounds like a good step to me. On the GH6 the super-weak spot WILL HAVE TO BE AUTOFOCUS. Even if the GH6 will turn out to be the REAL wow camera - unreliable AF will ruin the whole show. Regardless the speed, megapixels, video options, ProRES codec, you name it. If the AF f***s up, the system f***s up. Simple as that.

I love dp reviews, however, I just feel that m4/3 suffers because of this kind of content getting rammed down our ears by everyone on UA-cam; the whole “can micro 4/3 compete” content. The truth is, it’s a great system that works really well for most people who try it. It doesn’t need to constantly be compared to full frame. Quit beating a dead horse and please just let all the systems co-exist. There are so many times I see a photo and can’t differentiate what system (phone through full frame) it was shot on. If micro 4/3 ever dies, it’s because the internet willed it to happen. Too many UA-camrs have the stupid “Micro 4/3” is dead” title. It’s just so dumb. I’m gonna be plenty mad when the collective camera community finally kills off micro 4/3 and I have to buy a bunch of new gear just so UA-camrs can get views off of content that kills a platform people love.

A fellow professional photographer I know who is a Canon FF user referred me to a video by You Tuber, J Christina, a Canon user who went on about how the OM-1 was overpriced and was probably the 'nail in the coffin' for at least the Olympus/Om Digital Systems m4/3's line. All of this was pronounced with a show of sadness for the poor owners and fans of m4/3's, and all of it was before the OM-1 was officially announce, nor was an official price announced. He somehow managed to compute a theoretical initial price of $2,600 -- which of course is $400 over what the actual price is. I am fed up with all these negative numb nuts. By the way, my friend who is a Certified PPA Master Photographer is planning to replace his Canon 6D with an Olympus E-M1X -- because he's been so impressed with the performance and output of mine. :-)

Why not 2 billion megapixel sensors??? Come on , so your argument is MP should continually be increased? Ridiculous and stupid to keep going there. Did people in the 35 mm film days keep increasing the size of the film? I have a 16mp Fuji and 16mp MFT Olympus and Panasonic along with a 20mp 1 inch sensor Canon and Lumix. They are all pretty much indistinguishable on my computer screen and especially when printed. Not one of my friends has ever been able to guess the sensor size or megapixels from a single print when laid side by side. I think OM has went in the right direction however you are mirroring the foolish thoughts of those who are never satisfied with what they have and those just starting in photography will surely follow people like you who push for more and more megapixels. I still have my first Olympus EPL1 and a Fuxi X30 12mp and a Canon T2I 16mp and Olympus EM5 16mp. They have all traveled around th world at different times and all still work flawlessly. That is what I appreciate. The fact that they last and last. I have had a Sony A series corrupt and a Coolpix that died but for the most part I am in 2022 most concerned with build quality and we all have cameras that we take everywhere and those that we baby. I enjoy video also and that's why I especially love my Olympus cameras. Most of my cameras are high mileage and I think this new OM will find its way into my camera bag. The latter was a far superior camera despite the lower resolution sensor. Yes, the MFT manufacturers could play the numbers game for marketing purposes, but that's all it would be. Perhaps MFT does have a barrier to going higher in the pixel count due to pixel size and sensitivity issues. 'Ye cannae break the laws 'o physics captain'. Yes, if they could get the sensor to be fast enough to do hand held high resolution with moving subjects it would be incredible. This would also be better than increasing the native resolution of the sensor since you would not be hitting a new diffraction limit. Honestly, I was expecting them to have a sensor readout of at least 1/500 since the full frame sensors are hitting around 1/250 readout speed. Love your thoughts on what they can improve!! Keep it up!

Yes, agree, that would be quite important. High res mode in M1III takes almost 1sec from taking first frame to last frame ... even at fastest shutter speed of 1/8000. And that is often too long even in landscape when even only a slight wind is moving leaves and bushes. So therefore the high res mode is not suitable as often as I wish it would be. And the new M1 seems to be doubling speed, but what we need is about 10x speed.

Rather than going for more megapixels, I would prefer if they can give better low light performance, less noise at high ISO (at least comparable to older generation APS-C size sensors e.g. Nikon D500), better autofocus and tracking. This is especially true when paired with their 300 F4, 150-400 f4.5 lens or 100-400 lens for sports and wildlife. These are slow aperture lenses and desperately need better low light sensors. For landscapes a high res mode with 50mp is more than enough.
