I heard some of Pilot owners complaining about the faulty push start button and another issue with the air conditioning system. but its still a good SUV
PHOENIX S Thats just blabbing cause you own one. I have one, they arent that comfy..The Pilots arent either, but Toyota has rock hard 3rd row and 2nd row.
I own a 19 Highlander as well. I really like it but would also be happy with the Honda. They are both very high quality vehicles and I'm too old to be arguing over Ford and Chevy.
The Highlander has port and direct injection, whereas the pilot only has direct. If you're buying to keep, the highlander is the safe bet. We are getting a Highlander next month. I am a proud owner of the new Type R but it's Highlander for me.
i just got my wife a CPO 18' highlander yesterday. she loves it. my parents have an 18' pilot and already had issues with the transmission and cat convertor for some reason.
"Don't be fooled"??? Do you buy or lease? If you buy that means you're putting on tons of miles (why else would you buy?). All vehicles will greatly depreciate with heavy mileage. You will get virtually nothing in return so don't think for second the Toyota is going to somehow net you any major difference after 5 years of heavy use. If you buy and you don't put many miles on the vehicle then you are flat out stupid. Sorry for the bluntness.
The 3rd row seating in thes level suv’s Are the big concern. This time pilot looks to be more comfortable. But have to test drive before coming to a decision.
Ive owned both of these cars and the Honda seems like it would be better with features, but me and my wife like the Highlander more. It feels like it is just put together better. We have owned Pilot touring and the Highlander Limited.
Very informative!! 1: which has quieter ride? 2: does the window lock allows the driver to open windows for passengers? 3: does the mobile app has key fob functionality?
We've been heavily looking at both models. Very hard to pick. Like both, don't love either. Its too bad Honda can't make the Pilot look less like a minivan. The box style they had a couple years back looked better. I'm thinking about passing on both going with the Mazda cx-9
The fact that Toyota manufacturers a hybrid model clearly gives the Highlander and advantage over the pilot and ask for overall resale value the Highlander still Excels.Yes no Apple CarPlay no front LED headlights and a cramped third row but other than that that’s about it. Maybe I’m a little biased because I own a 2018 Highlander hybrid but for all it’s worth it’s an amazing machine. I am assuming the Apple CarPlay is going to trickle down to the rest of the 2019 redesigns since the Avalon does come with that.
FWIW, The past few years Toyota has been riding the wave of 'reliability' and set aside innovation and/or technology in their cars (the LX460 is a perfect example). If Toyota doesn't start spending more money on passenger-related R&D, they (including Lexus) will no longer be the darling of Asian market vehicles.
I kinda have to side with him. I've been a Toyota guy my whole life and we just got the Lexus RX 350 F-Sport 2. The only thing the Lexus has on the Pilot is exterior. Interior features I feel Pilot has done better IMHO for the rear seats. Toyota has to give in and allow Apple/Android usage. And it's interesting how a "budget" Honda has power folding mirrors-hopefully a sign of a new trend. I'll trust a Toyota more at the end of the day but-the Pilot is an interesting vehicle.
Highlander, impressive continuous panoramic moon roof +1 point. Pilot has great rear entertainment system thanks to the dual panel moon roof +1 point 😂
It really does speak on Toyota’s behalf that the Highlander has not seen a major redesign since 2013 (has only received mid-cycle refreshes) and Honda has redesigned the Pilot to compete with an OLDER style vehicle. While the infotainment is lacking in the Highlander, it just shows how well Toyota captured their audience as the Highlander continues to sell hand-over-fist. Toyota has always been slow to redesign their vehicles because hey “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” works for them. The Tundra hasn’t been redesigned since Truman was in office lol. Where as other manufacturers have tried out all these experimental technologies that turned out to be flops and hurt sales Toyota stayed with what is sturdy and time tested. The 2019 Pilot is one of the most tech forward formidable entry in the segment; its just crazy that a vehicle updated to compete with 2019 entities such as the Atlas, Telluride, Traverse, XC 90, Pathfinder, Ascent, CX-9, Explorer, etc still is roughly the same as a vehicle introduced in 2013. Good Job Toyota!
Fact: ASK all technicians that have 20+ years of experience, they will tell you that having a large & continuous moon/sun roof is a BIG DISADVANTAGE... Means, PILOT should get the points NOT the Highlander! And there's MANY things you gave to Highlander that is very subjective and BIAS. WE test drove already and the new 2019 Honda Pilot (Elite AWD) and the new tweaked transmission is AMAZING... WE can say that the 2019 Honda Pilot (Elite AWD) beats ALL crossover with 3rd row seat today. Thanks & more power...
Yes it is. My mother has a Ford Edge with a big panoramic roof and it cracked. We don't know how it is a 2015 with 30k garage kept. It was fixed under warranty but that to fix out of locker would have been expensive
Reliability wise the toyota has a timing chain (MUCH BETTER)vs the hondas timing belt. The toyota also has dual injection (again much more reliable) vs hondas direct injection (will cause engine failure from carbon build up over time), Finally the hondas 9 speed transmission (ZF-9) is terrible. Overall the toyota is built stronger and will last longer, That being said i bought the 19 honda ex trim because it comes with the 6 spd trans as it came with a Lifetime powertrain warranty that toyota would not offer
Thomas ZINDROS Honda makes good quality machines. But If you want to talk about quality Toyota is on the Top. Toyota makes a lot better quality and reliable Machines than Honda. Just sharing the truth I know.
Having driven both cars for one week, here is my feedback. 1. Honda has better seats for long trips as they have better support. 2. Better head lights. 3. Better Android and iPhone integration Toyota has better Engine and transmission. Better resale value.
@@lifeevolution7016 ..highlander uses timing chain which never needs replacement vs. Honda's timing belt. I still say that Toyota's engine is more reliable even though I am Honda fan as I think they do a better job in interior space, fit and finish and quality of seats.

I’m going to keep driving my perfectly running used 2007 car for another 5 years and invest the $50k into maxing out Roth IRA and investing into a good fund. Economy is going to pop over next five years. Especially when it does the same thing as my current vehicle. Note: roads will still be roads in 10 years....
Pilot instrument cluster would be a spoiler for this traditionalist. Honda displays generally are too gimmicky. That said, too much piano black in the Toyota.
That's a negative, 5 years from now when the seal breaks down and P0456 shows up that's going to be alot more expensive to fix than just replacing the fuel cap.
Honda cannot engineer a troublesome free transmission for the life of them. Just on that alone the Toyota should be a no brained. And the Toyota warranty is better! Reliability, and less headaches, go with Toyota!
Why is everyone looking at the DVD's and electronics and awd and none mentioning about Honda transmission problem? I had Honda Odyssey and it has only 120k and transmission already gave up.
Would it be better to wait on this comparison until the 19 Highlander has been released. A 19 Pilot compared to an 18 Highlander does not equally compare them.
Car Confections. These 3.5L V6's are not so similar. The Toyota has the new D4-S engine with both Direct and Multi-Port Injection, this eliminates the intake valve carbon build up problems inherent in Direct Injection only engine, like in the Pilot.
CORRECTION: The 2019 Pilot has three-passenger seating in the third row as well (despite what is stated in the video). Thanks, and we apologize for the confusion (I was thinking about the MDX)!
Well done video. Honda has a torque vectoring awd system. It's actually the same as acura's sh-awd but renamed i-vtm4 and configured slightly different. It's far better than toyota's awd. More cargo space, better acceleration, better awd, adults sitting in 3rd row with bluray + hdmi, android auto or carplay, etc.. I think the pilot wins
I’m currently trying to decide between the two. To me there isn’t enough room in the 3rd row for adults in the Highlander. I like the outside better on the highlander though. I’m Not sure which one I’m going to get.
although the Pilot wins the "faceoff" this is a completely unfair comparison since the Touring model comes in at $45.4k and already has remote start and a pearl white paint! it should be compared directly to the Elite model that comes in at $49k even! with the Elite model you'll be getting features like: mobile hotspot, perforated leather front and 2nd row seats, wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, rain sensing wipers and LED front row map lights! I appreciate the video but I feel that they should've compared it to the Elite model not the Touring!
I'm a Honda person, but I think the Highlander has a better looking exterior (not sure about the grill, but it looks nice on the SE model).. Can't wait to see what the 2020 Highlander is gonna look like.
Paying $40-50k for a Highlander and they STILL don't offer support for Android Auto/Apple Carplay. The Highlander may be a good vehicle, but if the tech is out of date before you even drive it off the lot, why bother with it when there are so many alternatives? Toyota needs to get over themselves and offer something better than their janky Entune software. If I'm going to spend that much on a car in 2018, I don't want an infotainment system that looks like something from 2010.
Android auto is so janky. I've used it on both nissans and chevys, and it seems to love to lose my gps on both multiple times. Sounds like a great idea, but execution is terrible. For something being available for the last 5 years, it is a shitty experience to give customers. It is a unfinished project that needs some polishing. Google has been using its customers to beta test their products for years, why would this be any different? Simpletons!!!!
I just spent 47K on my 2019 4runner limited, the technology on this thing is so outdated, it's exactly the same as 10 years ago.... Doesn't even have a blind spot monitor. But you know what, I like it. Simple as that
The Pilot is handsome no doubt and is a worthy opponent to the Highlander. However, I'll stake my money on Toyo all day long, if not for the simple fact that it has a traditional shifter.
Test drove the pilot. Seats are really uncomfortable is first thing that came to my mind when I started driving. About to test drive a highlander on Saturday.
Honda Pilot has known issue of soft, spongy brakes. Search the internet and you will find tons of complaints from Pilot owners. Brakes travels almost to the floor. I have both Odyssey and Pilot and both have same brake issues. That’s why I switched to toyota and happy with my decision.
I am going to buy GTR HID headlights for around $300. and they come with a lifetime warranty, and yes this includes the bulbs! These HID's are more likely to be brighter than the Honda LEDs.
Changing the traditional shift gear to a bunch of buttons is the worst innovation ever. It is like Microsoft removing the Start button from Windows 8, only to put it back after millions of users complained.
I prefer the Highlander’s exterior design and the Pilot’s tech interior
But that Black Edition tho 🥵
Great review! I wish you covered front leg room for driver and passenger. I find so many vehicles very limited in this regard, irrespective of price

Subaru=“off road”

Nissan=price
Drew Dude Honda reliable and is good in tech
When people shift to electric for good Toyota is going to lose its crown

Have both of these (2016 Highlander vs 2019 Pilot). 3rd row in the Pilot is more spacious but it's safety features are a PITA imo.
My answer: neither
Auto stop start is a huge turn off for any vehicle especially if you cant turn it off. 1 or 2 MPG is not worth engine destruction
You can turn it off on the Highlander. My wife can't stand it on.

I appreciate the video but I feel that they should've compared it to the Elite model not the Touring!
hondas don’t need all those extra features, they can win even with the base model LX 😭
If the Toyota had the optional cargo tote, the price difference would be 1 dollar. Lol.
If I'm going to spend that much on a car in 2018, I don't want an infotainment system that looks like something from 2010.
good point.
Howard Horst nor led headlights
I just spent 47K on my 2019 4runner limited, the technology on this thing is so outdated, it's exactly the same as 10 years ago.... Doesn't even have a blind spot monitor. But you know what, I like it. Simple as that
Tech is overrated, and not needed.
Very detailed and impressive review thanks for putting all the efforts !!
Glad you liked it and thanks for watching!
Thank you it was a pleasure watching your video .
I'll take 5he Pilot all you need is a EXL maximum
Love my black edition Pilot
The Pilot is handsome no doubt and is a worthy opponent to the Highlander. However, I'll stake my money on Toyo all day long, if not for the simple fact that it has a traditional shifter.
If I am going to spend 50k, I would definitely get lower trim MDX or RX.
Agree. Just got a new MDX w AWD & Tech for ~$47k, which I imagine is a common discount range. Lovely car.
My family got it for 43k
Two different cars
Can you do a video on the backup camera and sensors
I’m a Honda man 💯
they used to be $35,000range
how come went up to $47,500 in 2019 model
Sad
Hey dude. Because you make the best car reviews, can you do the pilot EXL
I know space is tight in the back but you said the Pilot can only handle 2 in the third row. Not true is it?
Test drove the pilot. Seats are really uncomfortable is first thing that came to my mind when I started driving. About to test drive a highlander on Saturday.
So how did it go?
Honda Pilot has known issue of soft, spongy brakes. Search the internet and you will find tons of complaints from Pilot owners. Brakes travels almost to the floor. I have both Odyssey and Pilot and both have same brake issues. That’s why I switched to toyota and happy with my decision.
I would love if you would include resale value in this comparison.
I am going to buy GTR HID headlights for around $300. and they come with a lifetime warranty, and yes this includes the bulbs! These HID's are more likely to be brighter than the Honda LEDs.
I'd go with the Honda Pilot as my first bro.
Changing the traditional shift gear to a bunch of buttons is the worst innovation ever. It is like Microsoft removing the Start button from Windows 8, only to put it back after millions of users complained.
Toyota marerials will out beat hondas
2019 Pilot vs Ascent
I like the highlander back seats fold flat. I didn't see that with the pilot.
