Parables about Patience: Luke 12:35-40; 13:6-9, 13:18-21, 13:34
Jesus tells the story of servants patiently waiting and watching for their master to return Luke 12:35 - 40
The Setting: Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem
The Narrative Setting: Servants await their master’s return from a wedding banquet Luke 12:35-36
Servants are dressed
Lamps are burning
All are watching for the master to welcome him home
The Surprise: It will be good for the master to find ready servants Luke 12:37-38
The master will serve the servants
The master finds his servants ready even though it is late
The Point: Stay ready Luke 12:39-40
Thieves would not succeed if the owner was ready
The Son of Man returns when we do not expect him

Jesus tells a story about an unfruitful fig tree Luke 13:6-9
The Setting: Pilate’s sacrifice of Galilean worshipers Luke 13:1-5
The Narrative Setting: A fig tree in a vineyard Luke 13:6-7
The owner looked for fruit
The owner told the gardener to cut it down
The Surprise: The gardener asked for patience as he worked the tree one more year Luke 13:8-9
The Point: God is patiently waiting for his people to bear fruit

The Surprise: A small seed grows up; a small amount of yeast changes the dough Luke 13:19, 21
The Point: God has been patient with the people of Jerusalem Luke 13:34
