  • 《My father-Wang Luobin》.Written by Wang Luobin's son, Mr. Wang Haicheng, the novel tells the legendary life of the great musician Wang Luobin. The novel has been adapted into a musical stage play, film and TV series.
    Wang Luobin (1913-1996)
One of China’s most celebrated national musicians in the 20th century.
Native of Beijing, Wang Luobin graduated from the Music Department of Beijing Normal University in 1934. Four years later after his transcription of the first Xinjiang folk song The Girl of Dabancheng in Lanzhou, he fell in deep and everlasting love with Northwest China and lived there ever after for the rest of his life (though where he was imprisoned twice for altogether eighteen years). He devoted his whole life to the collecting, transcribing, composing, and spreading of China’s northwestern folk songs.
Altogether, Wang Luobin’s works are seven operas and some 1,000 songs, which have been included in his six published songbooks.
Most of his musical works are love songs, among which In a Faraway Place and The Half Moon Is Climbing in the Sky have been chosen as the Chinese musical classics of the 20th century and awarded “The Golden Record Prize for Outstanding Musical Composition” by the Chinese Government. Many of his other songs such as The Girl of Dabancheng, Alamhan, Lift Your Veil, A Lovely Rose, Mayira, Youth Dance, In the Silver Moonlight, to name a few, have spread far and wide both at home and abroad, which have enriched the treasure house of the Chinese musical classics.
In July 1994, Wang Luobin was awarded “The Prize for Special Contribution to Cultural Communication between the East and the West” by Unesco for his outstanding contribution to the spreading of Chinese music to the outside world.
