  • “You learn a lot when you expose yourself and exposure brings out the potential in you.”
This is the testament of 38-year-old Mesulame Soga of Banikea Village tikina Lekutu in Bua who has advanced from yaqona farming and created a brand to his name.
“I used to drive the village carrier and in 2015 I transported participants of the World Day to Combat Desertification to Nayarabale village in Macuata and it fascinated me that on my way back I promised myself to utilize the land,” he said.
“Upon my desires, I bought planting materials and planted 3,000 yaqona plants to start with on a piece of land closer to home before expanding with the expenses saved from driving the carrier to buy another $500 worth yaqona plants for the second phase,” said Soga.

Fijians are blessed with the most precious resource that most acquire by spending thousands and millions of dollars and that is the Land.Every Fijian owns Native land or the matqali kovukovu for the members to utilise either for family livelihood or commercial use.But the problem that we have is the message from those on the Yasana Tikina and Tokatoka level to educate young people who are drop outs from school that farming is the best source of livelihood. Not only that...workshops and other form of trainings by the Agricultural Departments should be taken and that should come through those who run the affairs of the community Turaga ni Yavusa and Turaga ni mataqali. This are the mechanisms that are missing. Most young people run to urban settings to enjoy bright lights and get themselves into extra terrestrial activities.Because there is nothing that they see in the village meaningful or purposeful to take them forward.
