Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on helping people with sensory, physical or cognitive disabilities and become as independent as possible in different aspects of life. OT can help kids with disabilities improve physical, cognitive, sensory or motor skills and enhance their sense of confidence and self-esteem.
For children with autism, OT program focuses on play skills, learning strategies, and self-care. It can also help to manage sensory issues.

I am autistic and i went to occupational therapy. For me it helped significantly with motor skills, reading social cues, putting a name to emotions i was feeling that i couldn't quite register or communicate, and allowing me to find ways to focus and navigate the world around me. Now that I'm older I'm able to advocate for myself more, likely in part of OT. For anyone who is autistic or has a child who is, please consider this.

my baby is under OT ..HE SCREAMS A LOT n cries ..my son is a very calm kid..he doesnt cry or scream normally but when he goes under certain therapy like walking with hands with head down n legs up.. the therapists dnt allow us parents to enter the room. Mam my therapist is taking therapy only for half an hour for 5 day in a week is this sufficient for OT please reply
In Greece autistic children do a 45 min therapy twice a week. And that's it. But we strongly advise parents to do everything we tell them at home. In most cases we see great improvement. What I can tell you as an OT is that every autistic child is different and we treat every child as an individual. I advise you to speak with your child's therapist and trust them in what they tell you, if you don't trust them then find another one.

Have u taken any professional advice?
At times, some of them are late talkers and we need not worry. However, for 4-year-olds, your son should be able to speak well. Ensure frequent interaction with ur kid at home (explain him ur daily activities, keep interacting, and include bedtime stories) and provide good social exposure with others, things should get better eventually.
To rule out any social communication disorder, he will have to undergo tests. Keep a check on that!

Hi.. Pls make sure you play or do a variety of activities that are interesting to your child. From what you described, looks like your child may have challenges in maintaining eye contact. Try coloring, painting, building blocks, play with bubbles and improve the eye contact over time. Pls work on identification of objects or basic things at home. Ask your child to name it verbally and also by pointing using index finger.
Note: Pls do not demand for an eye contact, try to achieve the same through fun activities.

This is called 'Visual Stimming'
Commonly seen in children with autism. It is the way to calm themselves when they experience a sensory overload.
To manage stimming behaviours, try the following n make it a routine: Work on ur child's fine motor & gross motor control and balance skills & depth perception. Give ur child frequent massages after some good physical workout/activities. Focus more on palm/fingers while massaging.
This can help when done continuously and intensively.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication and behavior of a person.
There is no cure for Autism.
The goal is to help people with ASD communicate better, minimize anxiety in social settings, and lessen challenging behaviors.
Starting supportive therapies as soon as possible is important. (Therapies like Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language therapy, remedial teaching)

Occupational therapy helps the child to achieve his/her milestones which he hasnt achieved. We target various domains like fine motor, gross motor, posture, motor planning etc. Its very important to start these services as soon as you find any signs of developmental delays.

It is important to know how your son makes eye contact with you. Children observe the world around them and develop their ability to communicate using their visual sense. Play a lot with your son, in this process he will be making good eye contact with you. Eventually, when you point something around, he will pay attention. Tip: use a dark/semi dark room and with a help of a torch, you can show the things around that you may want him to see. However, have a good rapport with your child, play with him more and more, bring out more laughter in your parent-child relationship and that is the most important key for further progress.
