    Hey Wren, this may or may not help the next time you need to make a magazine.
    Making sure you have plenty of wood to work with, drill the holes before you shape everything. It means you have more wood for the vice to hold onto making everything more stable. Start with a smaller drill bit, you'll end up being more accurate that way anyways, and work your way up to the diameter you want, keeps its more stable as you're taking less material at a time.
    To cut the shape of the magazine, you can use a small handsaw like a gent's saw and cut across and around first, then cut down along the length of the magazine. The first round of cuts simply makes sure that the second round can't cut deeper than it should. leave about 1 or 2mm when you cut and just pare down with a chisel to the line you laid out. to pare down, hold the chisel bevel up, placing the cutting edge straight onto your line and aiming the chisel up. This is so that you won't go below the line. Strike the chisel with the palm of your hand and the corner will pop off. Using this as a reference, in a stabbing motion with the chisel as flat and parallel to the line as you can get it, start removing material and slow down and into a slicing motion the closer you get to the line. You can now use the flat of the chisel as a register to the line you want to get to.
    Essentially you're just doing a very big tenon joint.

      He also split the grain, if he rotated the wood to drill perpendicular to the grain, it would be much more stable

    • @jtocool
      @jtocool 3 роки тому +2

      He also should have been drilling horizontally. The way he was doing it his trigger hand was at the height of his shoulder meaning he had little leverage against it grabbing also making it difficult to stay stable. I would have rotated the secondary handle to have control on two axis.

  • @ildanach
    @ildanach 3 роки тому +14

    General ideas for the v2 build. Make the shoulder mount and the body by yourself. As the only function this needs is giving stability and holding cables you can use ligther materials to lower the overall weight of the rig. additionally if this is done from thinner pieces of metal you will go further away from the rifle look as well. Seeing as the general idea is for this to be used in "active position" for longer ammount of times than when you aim with a rifle, give an extra padding to the shoulder mount to relieve the tension on the arm.
    Another thing - If you add a rail at the top of the rig, and attach the mount onto it instead of directly into the body you can regulate the position of the camera and how the weight is distributed. One more possible customization - extendable rail under the camera to which you can attach a handle. You coud as such decide if you want the handle close to the body for better stability or extrude it forward to shift the weight distribution and make it easier to hold longer and give you more fluid movement. Plus you could always attach a tripod instead of the handle to it if you'd want to film while lying on the ground for whatever reason :)
    Under the shoulder mount you could set up space for weights to have an even better capabality of setting up the weight distribution.
    And one last thing - I have no idea how secure the lock mount is. Seeing that with the strap the camera is hanging I wouldn't exclude the possibilty that with a rapid movement the lock mount could somehow fail. I probably would add some line based secure mechanism that would save the camera from smashing into the ground if the mount lock would ever decide to fail.

      Doesnt work great with pine wood 2x4’s which is what i think he was using. Pine is super soft and those generic drill bits he was using looked like those cheap “wood/metal/plastic” bits. They have a tendency to catch on soft wood even with a pilot hole.

    Wood working advice for the project:
    You are splitting the grain by drilling with it, you should go opposite of the grain to make it stronger and so it will have a smaller chance of splitting. you will want to star with your pilot bit, size of bit between the pilot and final, and then the final. Hold the drill so you are above it (you should be able to look at the back of the drill rather than the drill being above you head. Change the torque on the drill to be lower so instead of possibly splitting the bit will come to a stop.
    Let me know if there are any other questions.

    To further make it a bit less suspicious looking, you can always paint the whole body in bright orange; you could probably even go so far as to put a side panel on each side that boldly says, “PROP,” or, “NOT A GUN,” or something.
    Depending on the camera body, if they have an adjustable touchscreen, you could adjust the screen up and/or more towards the chest to reduce neck strain.
    If you don’t move forward with utilizing the trigger, it may be better to remove it and shave off the trigger guard, which (I think) would further move the shape away from what people might quickly assume is a firearm, both in appearance and how the hand looks while holding it.

      Would have been fine if they used the correct type of bit. Looks like a metal bit used in wood. Or it's just really dull. Wood drilling shouldn't require much pressure, even when hand drilling with old auger bits the pressure required is minimal as the drill bites into the wood on its own. And the design of the drill bit means there should be no expanding pressure on the wood.

      I did!!!! That’s like literally exactly what I did haha. I started with a tiny pilot hole, then to a slightly larger drill bit, and then the 1/4” bit that ended up breaking the wood. In hindsight I guess I needed just one more in-between bit but at the time I thought I’d done enough.
      Also, our section of tools sucks. I was using really dull drill bits.

    Replace the gun magazine with external battery for tactical re...charge.
    Put a dslr camera dial where thumb can reach, like a fire mode selector in a gun.
    To balance the handle in the center of mass, consider using P90, Famas or Aug.
    Shotgun mic as an attachment, like a granade launcher in a rifle (kind in the right so left hand can still pull focus).
    For an alternative project for longer focal lengths (>300mm), would be useful having a small tripod in the front (as in a sniper rifle).

    so if you want to make the trigger a shutter button, the airsoft trigger is very neat in the way that it works, once the airsoft trigger is pulled it works as a metal wedge that connects two contacts that connect the battery to a motor, but you could probably find a way to connect it to something else because these contacts can be soldered to anything else and the platform allows for wires to be routed into the stock or the pistol grip or even the handguard depending on model. the only thing you would need is a device that activates the shutter for you, then connect the wires to the trigger and your good to go! now this could get way more complicated if you wanted to use the guns selector switch to change between an auto focus selection or a fire mode. im so exited to see you all do it

      The Russians have been doing it since WW II. Its unfortunate that the perfect shape for a stable camera grip is the same as a rifle, and so isn't possible to use in public. I wonder if it would be possible to make one shaped in such a way that people aren't freaked out? Probably not, the stance you would take would have to be the same, so it would look like you are holding a rifle either way.
      Could probably still be used for wildlife photography, it wouldn't be too out of place and easier to explain in that context.

    I'm kinda picturing Jake watching it and at the woodworking fail bits just shaking his head and when Wren say will just 3d print it Jake slowly looking down while taking the hand to his brow with the 'judging old man' vibe.
    (Love you Wren, but was really amusing the "New technology, wood!" and then little after 'Oh screw it, I'll just 3d print that.')
    Also, the idea is cool, the design for a final product prob should use some ideas to make sure it don't look as much as a gun. Lovely idea as may be, and blunt as he was Sam wasn't wrong on potential to bad stuff happening with a camera rig that make look you're with a weapon poiting at people XD
