As one of the student writers of this episode of Bewitched, (Burles Cooks, Jr.) I found it highly insulting what was on Wikipedia about the students. There, it states, "In 1969, [4] Marcella Saunders, a 23-year-old teacher at Jefferson High School in Los Angeles, [5] found that her ninth-grade students were unable to read the short stories and poetry in the class textbook. She thought that, because her students were more familiar with television than poetry or short stories, she would have more success in teaching her students if she taught them by way of a television series. She found that her students liked Bewitched, Room 222, and Julia, so she contacted the corresponding television studios to tell them about her idea. Only Bewitched responded. [6] Having gained an audience with Montgomery and her husband William Asher, Saunders told the couple that most students at the school were unable to read, write, or comprehend at a high school level, with 44% reading at a third grade level and very few students reading at a level much higher than that; less than 1% were reading at a ninth grade level. Saunders added that Bewitched was the students' favorite television series. [5]s"
First, we were in the 10th grade, not the ninth, Thomas Jefferson High didn't have a ninth grade. Second, if we weren't able to read, write or comprehend at a high school level how did we indeed write the script? The teacher walked away with the Governor's Award and Emmy trophy. We as the script writing students got absolutely nothing, sounds familiar?
Burles Cooks, Jr. you helped write this episode that’s awesome you all did a amazing job this is my favorite episode I have seen a lot on reruns and till yesterday while on google I never knew high school students wrote this I just watched this again on fetv this morning
Burles Cooks, Jr. also that’s is horrible you all did not get anything for the amazing job you all did
Burles Cooks, Jr. Wow , so sad to hear this. I just watched the end of this on TV 7/11/18 and had to google the episode because I wasn’t sure of the reason for the brown faces. Daily Motion has the full ep., not sure why UA-cam chose not to. Anyway thanks for the info, otherwise I wouldn’t have had that info from anywhere else it appears.
Burles Cooks Jr,this was my favorite episode even thou I was two years older Melanin little girl in 1970. I began watching this show later on in the 1970s or the 1980s whenever they would play the reruns. I have dvds now watching this show because I cant stand modern Television shows. What a tragedy that you all did not get the recognition that you all deserved for writing this fabulous episode.
Typical. Was your teacher white? Well find the trifling thief and have her correct the story! You all did a fantastic job. I remember that episode. I was a senior in high school. You and the others creative writers know the truth. Now we do as well. Peace and be proud!
A favorite Bewitched episode of mine. A rare piece of social commentary for this show. Well done.
Samantha and Tabitha rule!
Actually Bewitched in a way was always social commentary. Bewitched though a sitcom was a show about a mixed marriage.
Reggie Longstreet Yep.
@Willie Gordon Yeah, for one thing witches aren't real.
@@patriottroll1764 Are you sure? ;)
I was in the 10th grade in December 1970 when this 'Bewitched' episode aired. I had forgotten this episode until this morning, March 24, 2021. I came across an article discussing facts you didn't know about 'Bewitched'. When the episode of 'Sisters at Heart' was discussed, I remembered Crackle T.V. is showing seasons 6 & 7 of 'Bewitched'. I went to look for episode 13 in season 7 and it's missing on Crackle T.V.
Due to political correctness, I believe episode 13 of season 7 'Bewitched' was removed because cast members were in Black face. Their being in Black face was to teach a racist bigot a lesson. I was lucky to find the entire episode online. As a now 65 year old Black man, this is one of my favorite 'Bewitched' episodes.
I remember watching this episode on Christmas eve 1970 I.was 7 yrs old in my bed n happy that Santa Claus was coming . I loved it then bewitched was awesome
It's so gratifying that this episode is still being discussed. I can imagine a smile on Liz's face. It was her favorite episode. It's one of mine as well.
I'm really glad the powers that be have seen fit to allow it to stay up. It's been on this channel for 12 years :)
Just read an article on USA today & really liked it!It won an Emmy governors award.
One of best episodes of Bewitched ever! And so ahead of its time. In 1970 there was still so much discrimination going on in this country. How far we have come in 45 years but we still have a bit more to go!
Because of shows like this I had the false illusion that the country was shifting more swiftly than it was. Amazing how long it takes to sink in.
Now the Olympic athletes all have bewitched cupping spots said Michael Phelps? lol
I was actually surprised. I thought back then, everybody was racist
ncmountaingal1960 I agree and I found our searching google on facts about this show that this episode was written by black high school students they did a great job on it
erin mefford,oh wow and I never knew that how awesome.
Larry was cool as hell with that hand slap
Thanks so much.
This episode was just being discussed on the news today June 2020, because of the racial issues going on now.
Fun fact about this episode was written by African American students in a 10th grade English class they even got to attend a production meeting and go on the bewitched set
They were in 9th when they wrote it and presented it to bewitched when they were in 10th grade
People rememer all the stars in black face but the black actors also were in whiteface too. I remember seeing this on tv as a kid and wanting to change my race after being bullied a little (verbally ) for being black and having straight A's in school / friends said your black, trying to be white we dont get all A's - i started skipping school to lower my grades to b's. Peer pressure ..... Now looking back I was so stupid.
Forgive your younger self, that's what I do.
This episode aired on the same day Disney's the aristocats was released in theaters on Christmas eve of 1970
That's a great bit of history to add to this post. Thank you.
I LOVE BEWITCHED
