- A really good swell kicked off a week-long run of fun waves.
This winter so far has been rather dismal for surf. When the forecast showed a legit swell coming in mid January, surfers were a bit skeptic but ambitiously hopeful.
The swell arrived January 12th and didn't disappoint. I headed down to San Diego to catch the first part of the swell and saw something I very rarely see in the line-up. Respect.

I surf the SoCal coast everyday, and I can tell you the San Diego lineups are filled with the nicest and most giving/forgiving people on the planet.
Im sure most can be nice but my 1st visit to Pacific beach I tried to respect the locals n wait longer then “my turn” and I must have gotten lucky n found a pretty rude assface local.. don’t like bad vibes in the water so I paddled over to the next bump
Not even close! The line ups are filled with aggressive kooks from all over the place. It’s not the locals that ruin it, it’s the pass throughs and tourists. There is no respect.
@@ErikaLaGrande based on your response, it might be you that has issues. I surf the HB Pier all the time and while it is indeed aggressive, I can assure it's not the "kooks" that are behaving this way. I can tell you this, as long as you're not an ass and acting like a fool, you can paddle out and have fun in most places. I would add that I surf up and down the coast and I have no problem letting the "locals" know where I'm from. It's a nice way to start a conversation and perhaps gain a friend in the water. Lastly, I'm sorry if I misconstrued your comment, but "aggressive" and kook is rarely used in the same sentence.
i was surfing snapper and i got punched in the back of the head for telling someone to get off my wave hahaha
totally agree. Pacific beach is the only place where I've ever gotten called into a wave. I'm sure it's different at the La Jolla reefs though
honestly, most of north San Diego county is pretty chill. very few places are super localized and priority is highly respected. Carlsbad and Oceanside is great.
Surf etiquette is the difference between San Diego and LA surfing.
There are tons of SD spots with zero etiquette
@@bcohodas not north county, at least grand view and higher. grew up in Carlsbad and both it and Oceanside are super chill
Yeah, plus you forgot to mention Orange County wedged between the two... I find the "bad attitude" surfers ESPECIALLY at Huntington!

I used to camp in the parking lot at Tourmaline. I was able to get out in the water on a few rare days before the crowds showed up.
Same here! Lived off Garnet and hit Law..those were the days!
Been to this place, nice, easy paddle out. Its located between Tijuana Sloughs and Redondo Breakwater...
I had been to a couple of those sessions where the waves come so often that everyone's attitude turns into something where everyone respects each other's waves. I mean the consistency obviously makes people's mind click and think "ohh there are waves for everyone, Im letting this one go"

Sometimes what looks like etiquette is just locals snaking the line-up and taking every wave. I bet some guys out there hardly got a wave.
Im so glad surfing is relatively undiscovered where I live. I couldn’t handle crowds like that. If there’s five people out at my local breaks I’m like “where did all the people come from!?!?”

What is that shit playing in the background? No soundtrack is needed for a surf video. The sound of the waves breaking is much better than any man made noise!
