Well, I'm middle aged - so I have a strong connection to the days of VHS tapes and the emergence of computer graphics. Of course the 80s (when I was a teenager), everything was synth. New Wave, early industrial, minimal wave (what they've now retro actively branded the more rough, underground pressings of those analog songs from that time) were a lot of what I listened too. Also I got to absorb some of those pioneering electronic artists like Wendy Carlos, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis etc. So I find a lot of the ident music very appealing and memorable. Sometimes there are orchestrated tunes, but I have a preference from the ones that sound like they're right out of the 70s. I completely understand the vaporwave aesthetic - this merging of these synth heavy sounds, degraded R & B artifacts, hazy nostalgia of technologies past and retro graphics. However, because it's the internet age, THERE'S SO MANY vaporwave mixes being made by everyone. I can't even discern the quality! This is the first time someone has pointed out the term retrowave to me, so I do not yet know what constitutes the difference in styles (even if it is small) I'm glad you've enjoyed these mixes of the VHS logos. I try to make the sound stable with similar audio levels and brighten some of the more murky logos. I also cut any extraneous logo footage, so each one moves to the next with very little gap in between idents like some of the other logo collections on UA-cam. I was born in '81 so I have a soft spot for VHS aesthetics and synth music as well. I do associate it with certain feelings of a cozy past - pleasant haziness and warmth, child-like semi-conciousness, etc. - and on the other hand, visions of the future that never arrived. I love vaporwave as an idea, but I think that most records are just novelty trash. You're right, it's hard to find a gem amongst all those Bandcamp LPs... I've noticed that the ones with really bad album covers tend to be quite rubbish. But labels like Dream Catalouge release really great quality stuff. Of course none of them will ever beat the Blade Runner OST. As for retrowave, I think I should've rather called it synthwave: it's more beat-oriented, catchy stuff that emulates 80s synth music. It's not as interesting as vaporwave and mostly very samey. I hope both these genres will evolve into something more complex and futuristic and artistic.
Thanks for cutting the start and end of the lnter Pathé Video logo, the music in the 80% of itself is fine but that other 20%… Ugh So that's a change. Good comps tbh
