Yes to the OT feeding. It could be a game changer. Little adjustments will make such a significant difference.
Again i have to say I applaud you and your husband for being so accepting about the challenges you face with him. Early intervention is key. It’s hard to grasp but you both do it flawlessly. Sending you all loves!!

Hi Tara, in OT I had our son do some feeding therapy. My son wouldn't touch anything green or with a slimy texture. He only wanted carbs and crunchy textures. And basically for him to try new foods they allowed him to explore the new foods first by playing with it, smelling it, licking it, even before having him eat it. I had carrots and sweet bell peppers and his therapist would create things with it so he'd explore them. He eventually would put them in his mouth and ultimately he did eat them. Now he eats carrots in his school lunch, and will eat a turkey stir fry with loads of veggies in it. It will take time, but the key is introducing it consistently even if he doesn't touch it. It might take well over 10 tries. Don't give up! I totally understand your struggle ❤️

Special Ed teacher here- I definitely would recommend looking in to OT for feeding. Another tip when trying new foods/textures is to model playing with it, touching it, picking it up with him to see if he will follow. This might help him get more comfortable with new foods and textures. I can’t tell you how beloved goldfish and mini muffins are in our classroom😂🩷 we love a good safe food!

I deal with ASD myself. I remember that as a child, I was more likely to try something that I hand in helping my mother prepare. That has continued to help me in adulthood, but honestly, I'm still quite picky, but mostly when it comes to what others have prepared. I guess it has to do with seeing what all is actually in a dish. But a good part of my problem was texture, so I wouldn't even eat things that I know I liked the flavor of. So I guess it depends. Sorry if what I wrote doesn't help in any way, it's just an idea. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Feeding w/sensory sensitivities can be so hard! Using the First/Then vernacular can be effective if you give him something to eat that you know he likes (even 1 bite) then give goldfish. Stay consistent in expectations and he will get in the routine of eating something else before getting goldfish. Ask your school OT for help w/this or feeding therapy is great too.

We started doing full family dinners- everyone at the table together and all food goes on a plate. Safe food always offered in an amount large enough to fill up and then small manageable amounts of other choices. Repeated exposure and modeling over and over and over and over. I would put the goldfish on his plate rather than in a bag and make them an option for him just like any other food. Play it cool and don’t make a big deal if he looks at or touches or tries another food. Give this a shot for a month and see if any progress! If not, feeding therapy has helped some of my friends!

My child doesn’t have ASD, but super super picky to the point of gagging and throwing up. We just tried to make sure he had some sort of protein with each “meal” he ate and he just turned 7 and he eventually just decided to try new things on his own time. Definitely one of the most frustrating things I’ve been through as a mom but just know that he will eventually try new foods and won’t be like this forever.

The AS was really helpful & we stopped giving snacks. Honestly it was so effective we cut back on the stimulant to every other day & then every 2-3 days

I know it’s a tough pill to swallow but he’s super smart you can tell. Just don’t keep those items in your house. He eats differently at school because they aren’t offered. Even a small bag of goldfish will fill him up enough to not want dinner. The first day will be hard but it will get easier. Good luck ❤

This doesn't always work with ASD kiddos. My son literally starved himself for 2 days. Ate nothing. He was losing too much weight. The doctor told me to feed him what he will eat and continue trying to add foods in. Her son is even more on the extreme side than mine was since mine would at least eat 1 food from carbs, fruits, and protein categories. He only eats peanut butter, cheddar jack and cheedar cheese, or very specific flavored and textured yogurt. If it's white cheese he will not eat it. If the food does not look the same, feel the same, smell the same, they struggle. So you have to make small changes over time.

@@wolflover4life19yep! Thats my son! I had to go to the store and he was in tears because he didnt have anything he likes. I also talked to his dr to make sure I'm doing things how they should be. He said the same thing. Offer new stuff ask for them to try it but don't force. We even tell him to try something first and then he can have what he wants. If he likes it he will eat more of that and what he wants.

Feeding littles has a great course on feeding littles, and you want to expose them to different food, so just keep introducing new foods cut small and then I’ll eventually try it, a plate that has the dividers in it and different utensils like tongs chopsticks things that are different to use instead of a fork or spoon.

My son is now 17 and was diagnosed when he was 3...food was never my battle, however, as he got older I tried to just give him control. So we would try a new food every Tuesday, but he got to decide what it was and we reassured him that it was ok if he didn't like it. We just kind of did it low key. Hang in there...I know how hard it is. My son now plays football, his tall and basically all muscle and he still lives on cheese its, popcorn, poptarts, hot dogs and chicken nuggets mainly. Watch the Temple Grandin movie with Claire Danes, it's very relatable and it's cool to see it from the ASD person's persepctive. All people with ASD are different, so you will need to try a few different things and figure out what will work for him. You got this and so does he. He is amazing and you're doing a great job!

I have a daughter who is ASD level 3, GDD, ADHD & severe speech delay. She also has eczema which very much adds to it all. We have (with advice from our dietitian) slowly started adding vegetable puree to her sauce. We slowly introduced healthy versions of things she likes for example she will only eat white bread so we are looking at a low GI version of it. We give her apple juice that only contains apples, not additives or colours. We also do food therapy every now and then where she will have a lot of safe foods plus new foods that we know will taste the same each time like a cereal or muslie bar.

I also got him to drink these protein shakes from Sam’s because he doesn’t eat meat. They’re by the brand called carnation. But I feel you! If I sneak something, he won’t eat it and then regress because he loses trust in the food he’s comfortable with.

I definitely have a picky eater also! He will be 4 in may. His diet is pretty much little bite muffins and maybe 5 other things like hot dogs french fries and chips. But I have noticed if I let him get super hungry and I put something different in front of him he will lick it and then not eat it but I add another different thing he will lick that and choose which one he likes better and take a bite and then he will just sit there and since he's so hungry he ends up eating it. Since it was just a small amount of trying something new, I know he's still hungry I will give him something he does like to fill his belly. I hope that wasn't to confusing but it has worked for us! Good luck Tara this is a hard obstacle to tackle. Just be patient! ❤

My oldest is 7 and she was very picky at Greyson’s age, as her understanding started to grow so did her menu… she is still picky but much much better. In the other hand my second daughter is 5 and she is very picky (they both have ASD) and my daughter has been eating the same 5 things for over two years now… My suggestion will be find some vitamins, that will give you a little peace and he will get the vitamins he is missing, there are a lot of amazing brands on Sprouts just study them and see what works best for him. My daughter won’t take any pills so we give the vitamins in her almond milk 3 times a day to make sure she is taking all she needs. Recently she had some blood work done and she is doing amazing ❤ very strong and healthy!
My last tip will be always offer whatever everyone else is eating.. he will get curious and eventually he will try something 💕 that works with my oldest 💕 every kid is different you are doing an amazing jog!!

Seems a bit silly but they do get inspired by characters they see on a daily basis. Another thing you could do is try feeding him baked chicken legs with simple olive oil, salt & pepper dressing. They don’t like new foods at first but if you’re persistent, they tend to adapt it.

    Hey Tara
I've been following you since your very first vlog. Your amazing mom. I also have a son with ASD he is now 6. He's non verbal and almost deaf. When he was graysons age he only eat a few things just your little guy. Now today he has 15 items he eats. They are mostly breads and not very healthy snacks.
I have spoken to so many professionals and other parents. They say not to try and hide food in his food. Because then they can be turned off by the few things they are eating. Also you want to build that trust with the boy. I made that mistake and he stopped drinking his smoothie which is now I get all his vitamins, omega 3, iron (super important for sleep and many other things.) It do taste really bad but if you get the formula from the physicians that you only need like one little drop of it.. then it's easier for them to take in a smoothie. I put his fav yogurt, frozen berrys and then all the vitamins in. He loves it and he's getting what he needs to grow and be healthy. Other then that I stopped worrying and stressing about it. Hope this helps mama. God bless hugs

I have a super picky eater, i try to make a juice with fruit and veggies or a smoothie everyday so that I know she has had some fruit and veg at least. She helps make them and enjoys drinking them.

Offer him bites of your food if he seems interested! Maybe put just a tiny bit of new things on his plate so that he starts getting used to seeing them and possibly trying them. Also maybe let him eat wherever he wants and not necessarily at the table.

My son is such a picky eater tbh. He’ll be two next month and some days I think to myself why cant you just eat a variety of everything lol. He hates pastas and slimy things mainly. Always down for snacks but of course we need to give him “real foods” as well ❤

So put new foods on his plate with his safe foods. Also, if he starts liking Mac and cheese again, purée butternut squash or sweet potato and add to the cheese sauce. If it gets REALLY bad, feeding therapy can be an option

Cutting your hot dogs that way could cause choking! I’m not sure how well he chews his food but I do know they’re the perfect shape to get stuck. Seeing my baby choke was a nightmare for me. So I’m pushing my anxieties on you. lol
No hate! I adore you and your family. Just felt like sharing that with you..

My son is 4 years old but doesn't have what your son has at least we don't think so since he can't get diagnosed until he is 5-6 years old according to his doctor. But he only will eat hot dogs, chicken nuggets, cheese, cereal, fruit and peanut butter and jelly and won't eat anything else. I'm in the same boat as you are. I keep on trying to introduce him to different foods even though he doesn't eat it and it's still not working according to different websites and doctors and therapists they said that it would take anywhere between 12 to 14 tires before they will even try it.

My daughter is 4 with ASD. She was so picky that I was worried about her getting proper nutrition. I couldn’t even get her to eat a gummy vitamin. We’ve been in OT for feeding for about 6 months and it has been a huge help. We’ve added about 8 new regular foods for her and have learned strategies to get her to at least try new foods. They make it really fun and less painful by playing games and using incentives. I know how hard it can be, praying for you!

Try putting a little bit on the food your trying with him I his mouth. As his mother you can always use your clean fingers because they move so fast. He did not like it but we just apologised.
He most likely will spit it out but will remember the taste. We tried this and now our 3yr old will pick his siblings food to join in and have a taste.

i alwayas struggled with my son eating new foods so i knew making him new things was a waste of time so i wrote down the things i know he loves and will eat and i just choose from that list better than no food at all even if he eats the same things over and over here is what i do i always stalk up his favorite foods which are grilled cheese, hot dogs, spaghetti no meat, fettuccini alfredo no chicken, mac n cheese, also plain steak cut up to bite size, gold fish, rits crackers, alone or with nutela, or peanut butter gummy snacks, gold fish, oreo, teddy grams, strawberry yogurt, string cheese, ham and cheese sandwich crust off and sliced in half same with peanut butter sandwich no jelly and nutella toast, chocolate milk, sunny d, cup of noodles sometimes, fried potatoes with chorizo, fries, hot pockets, corn dogs, pizza, and i give him protein shakes vanilla and add chocolate syrup instead of the chocolate protein shakes which he dosent like for some reason, and he is big with fruit like strawberrys blueberys grapes bananas, peeled and sliced apples, mango sliced, watermelon and sometimes pineapple and a daily vitamin and he will be awesome

@@tarahendersonhey Tara you might want to try vitamin drops that are flavorless. My son only drinks water or juice but I will put it every morning in his water bottle and he doesn’t notice. The brand is Peak Performance. Hope this helps
