they were told to behave themselves for this show, by the studio. their live shows were just hysterical, with much, much more silliness,. they were considered the clown princes of surf music.

Jan the one with dark hair was in the accident. He was studying to be a Dr and wrote, arranged , produced most of their music. The Wrecking Crew played on all their records and it was Jan who was the one who put the main guys into a rotation together. Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer double drumming Hal in the house band here. Also Tommy Tedesco, Glen Campbell , Leon Russel , Carol Kaye ...... If not in the accident they would have stared in their own comedy show the fall of 66. Like the Monkees . Or Jan would have been a Dr. We'll never know.

Such a sad story. I've watched a few vids and documentaries on the Wrecking Crew and they were excellent musicians who seem to be just happy to have regular work. Tommy Tedesco sure seemed like a fun guy. Thanks for watching and chiming in. Scott

These wear all "First Call" Musicians. Mostly Jazz players. 8-12 + hours a day Jan & Dean , Frank Sinatra , Phil Spector even Motown..... Sometimes in the same day. 3 times Scale. These guys were on half the songs in the 60's.@@MusicallyChallenged

mike landreth Three times scale, so probably lass than $10 an hour for creating masterpieces.

They were making a couple hundred thousand a year. BTW Thank you for showing Jan & Dean they seem to get over looked now. But at the time they were right up their with the Beach Boys who also used at Jan's suggestion. These guys. I know they weren't great concert singers. Unlike the BB's they did not grow up singing together with the guidance of Murray developing a great singing voice. They also like to clown around and I believe Jan messing with the mic stand is staged. And they loved to give the "Finger" sneak it in when they could. LOL@@MusicallyChallenged

I remember seeing this at the Aurora Drive-In in north Seattle, was first theater run - - Beach Boys segment was cut out after first run - - Brian demanded that as he wanted audience to disassociate from surf music wile putting together "Pet Sounds". Original footage only restored last 10 years or so

Brian Wilson composed the music for CATCH A WAVE then Jan & Dean used Brian's song changing the lyrics for Sidewalk Surfin'.

I am a little surprised that you would think this wasn't all that good. While I agree that Dean's falsetto is a little rough in Sidewalk Surfin, Jan's vocals were pretty solid for his lower bass parts that he typically signs. In fact, the first song Little Old Lady From Pasadena is pretty solid in my view. And not liking their skits and intros to the other acts??? Are you kidding me?!?!? That is one of the things that really sets the TAMI Show apart from the TnT Show that followed with lessor success. You have to understand that at the time of the filming of this show in 1964, Jan & Dean were red hot, like Derek said they were neck and neck with The Beach Boys as far as chart success was concerned at that point in time. And the way you point out how Sidewalk Surfin was basically a copy of Catch A Wave as if it somehow has less importance.... People need to understand that "Catch A Wave" was a burried album cut on The Beach Boys "Surfer Girl" LP from 1963 and Brian Wilson nor anyone else ever thought the song had any hit potential as a single which is why it remained an album cut. It was Jan Berry who thought the song had potential and asked Brian if Jan & Dean could rework it with new arrangments and lyrics, and with that came the hit single "Sidewalk Surfin" peaking at #25 in Billboards Top 100, a pretty substantial hit and a song that was still climbing the charts at the time of the actual TAMI Show concert, so you shouldn't really act so surprised that they chose to do that paticular song.

Scott here. Yes, it is my personal opinion that J&D’s performance in this show was weak. No, I am not kidding you and my opinion isn’t based on anything other their performance and I’m not entirely sure why you seem to be taking this so personally. Please feel free to explain.

    • @shawncrossen7580

@@MusicallyChallenged There is nothing personal about it, I am simply stating that I don't see it the same way that you do. Please don't be offended as that wasn't my intention. The TAMI Show has gone down in history as one of the most significant concerts of it's time and I can simply not remember ever reading any criticisms regarding Jan & Dean's roll as the hosts for this show. As you listen to Steve Binders TAMI Show "Directors Cut" commentary, he thought pretty respectfully of Jan & Dean as being the hosts for this show. But to each their own...again no hard feelings, just my opinion.

@@MusicallyChallenged And as far as Sidewalk Surfin goes, I just was pointing out that it was their current Top 40 hit at the time and it would make sense that they would do that song where you seemed to question why they would do that one.

Shawn Crossen Shawn Crossen I wasn’t saying that I was taking your comment personally, I was saying that I personally thought the performance was weak and am of the same opinion still. The background you provided is interesting and helpful to the conversation. What was I do do with a comment like “Are you kidding me?!?!?”?

Jan vocals were perfectly fine as it was Dean's falsetto that was nails on a chalk board.
Jan was one of the earliest people to bring in Palmer and Blaine on drums together!!! Think he was like 23 years old doing that.
History is your friend, learn it.

Dean's voice was never right for Sidewalk Surfin. That's why Jan used Phil Sloan to sing falsetto on that one. Sometimes, as producer, Jan would use other people to help with the falsettos. Jan still sang lead and Dean was the falsetto on most of the hits. But he did what he had to do to make it work.

@@MusicallyChallenged Well, that's basically Dean's singing style, and sometimes he isn't as good live as in the studio. Also, an interesting bit of information which you might not be aware of, is that Dean only sang the falsetto parts on some of the original records. For the records The Little Old Lady From Pasadena and Sidewalk Surfin'... all the background vocals (and the falsetto parts) were done by The Fantastic Baggies, who regularly backed up Jan in the studio. Dean has said he may or may not have been singing on the records, and was probably mixed down in the background, but he wasn't doing the falsetto parts. He did sing those parts though when they performed live, and if it was a lip-synching performance (like on American Bandstand) Dean would lip-sync to the falsetto voice on the records. Same is true on their biggest hit, Surf City although on that song Jan was backed by Brian Wilson and several other session singers. Basically... in their early years (1959-1962) they were truly a duo in the studio, but during their days at Liberty Records (1963-1966) when they did all the surf and car music, it was basically 90% JAN and 10% DEAN as far as the making of the records. On stage they were much more of an equal partnership.

Jan Barry suffered from Aphasia after the accident, He knew he wanted to say something but didn't know what or how to say it. (Live) was never good for J&D they overdubbed to get all the harmonies, Every one copied songs different versions different groups Studios got stuffy about sharing talent & Material for free later, The beach boys & Jan & Dean use to jump into each other's studios and help do the backup vocals you can clearly hear Dean's falsetto in the chorus of the Beach Boys Barbara Anne. Jan put sounds like the revving engine in Shut Down, Skateboard in Sidewalk surfin, He engineered the sound. That caused Dennis Wilson to do the same with 409 for the Beach Boys to great effect He went on to create 1966 Good Vibrations there is a lot going on in that song. My favorite Jan & Dean song - The Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga Sewing Circle Book Review and Timing Association.

Technology was not as good for live performance, not monitors, not today's equipment. when you cannot hear yourself you cannot hear what your singing. mostly Jan and Dean were meant to be fun, not serious singers.
