This one is a doozy! Let me know in the comments if you have any other interesting insights into any of these styles - I'm not an expert in 50 styles so I'd love to hear from you! Also the deep dive videos into a bunch of these styles are linked in the description. Also, here are the VERY important timestamps for easy reference later. Enjoy!

You missed my style, solarpunk! The aesthetic is very biophilic, with an emphasis on used or handmade items, sustainability and lots of plants. It spawns from a cool philosophy/literary movement too!
Thanks for this Nick, could you deep dive into major ones, with examples and how to adapt it?
I absolutely love this!
I appreciate the alphabetical order🙏
Wow. That was amazing. Really.
This entire video needs to be made into a coffee table book! Then my 32 friends who aren’t coming over to sit on my ottomans can 👏 get 👏 their 👏 design 👏 styles 👏 together. 😂Thank you for this amazing run through so many styles Nick! Great job. 😘
I understood that reference! 😅
Came here to say this but see you already did! YES!!
Great reference! 😂
Love this comment 😂
I would buy that
This 25 min was better than 2 hours of Pinterest. Thank you!!!
Right??? I sometimes skip through long videos, but I could not tear myself away from this one, in fact, I went back and re-watched some parts. I'm going to watch again and take notes on the styles I love.
Literally I was trying to explain this to my friends and I was dreading the thought of having to make like 20000 pinterest boards
Ya so true
Nick I am BEGGING YOU
I have been searching for years for a book that lists every possible design style and goes into detail on them like an encyclopedia. This video is an amazing primer on a bunch of styles, but if you have a resource for people who want to really dig into the weeds of the topic, PLEASE SHARE IT
I second this and am replying with the hope that someone will reply with a recommendation and I'll get a notification about it from UA-cam 😅
I am also begging. Please hook us up, I need dream fuel
I am also joining the begging!!
Should I do it?
@@Nick_Lewis I would 100% buy it I don't care how much it costs I would fit it into my budget
Nick: 'And a "live laugh love" sign, let's be honest.' This absolutely killed me, LOL! You just can't help throwing in a dig against Modern Farmhouse, can you? But I just love that; it's a blessing to know what you like and, more importantly, what you don't like. Thanks for the video.
We know how much Nick loves modern farmhouse!! Especially those barn doors!! 😂
I really can’t. I tried hard not to share my opinion as much in this one.
@@Nick_Lewis An admirable attempt. I feel your pain. 😊
Gotta say I've been waiting for him to say something like this LOL
🤣 I was waiting for it... Waiting for it and voilà. Delivered! Hahaha
Nick you are my favorite interior designer on UA-cam. It’s not just your intelligence, it’s your adorable personality. ❤
Totally agree with you NuNu Girl !
❤
I love that you’re trying to speak about them each objectively, but that I can still see a faint smirk when there’s one you aren’t a fan of 😂🙏🏼 this was educational!
A lot of these feel like secondary styles. So when you're trying to find your style it seems like it'd be useful to identify a main style with a couple of supports (which is probably how fusion styles happen. it becomes really popular to pick the same supports for your main style e.g. Japandi). So maybe you like minimalism but you incorporate biophilic and Japanese design styles to support your overall minimalist aesthetic. I don't know what this would be for me exactly but it's something to think on!
Totally. Plenty of overlap. The names do get thrown around a lot though so I wanted to have a one stop shop video that included nearly everything.
@@Nick_Lewis Oh it's for sure needed! I just meant that I found it interesting how many of the styles could slot so nicely together. I will be absolutely referencing the video a whole lot as I keep working on my own house 😊
@@Nick_Lewis thank you, very helpful
Yes! I love to tell ppl to categorize in macro and micro terms. Start with a macro term, and then for more detail, pepper in the micro terms to help paint a better picture.
Lisa Holt gives these three big overarching styles (traditional, transitional and modern) and then Nick gives 50 micro styles.
I think I need the inbetween layer too! 😂
Lot of work went into this video, so thank you for that. Not easy to pinpoint my aesthetic, but after watching it gave me more clarity...traditional/transitional/eclectic, I think? Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it.
I think I’m four+ styles….that don’t overlap! When I was trying to decorate with the interior matching the exterior of a pre-1835 federal colonial, every weekend I’d be going thru wallpaper books at a Sherwin Williams. One Saturday, the woman who worked in the wallpaper section, said she saw me so many times, going through the books, and wondered if she could help. She brought out two books, opened the books and asked which paper I liked better. After going through pairs of books, we moved to a different section, and compared one of the first group of books, with the new one. I started seeing several papers that I liked, and she finally looked at me, and said that I just didn’t like colonial! She termed me “country casual”. After that, the selections went quickly. I am so grateful to her! 40 years later, I’d still be there every weekend
Where has this video been all my life??? Thank you!!
Thank you so much Nick for compiling this beast! I learned so much here and now I can kind of name the mix of styles I'm drawn to. You must be incredible at helping people create unique environments that reflect who they are.
Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed it.
Very true, its so helpful its easy to create what you want❤🎉
you forgot the “poor” style. Where you use that $9 ikea coffee table as the focal point of the room
Does this include the hand-me-down style?
That would be included in ecclectic.
Thanks, 90s grunge is all I can think about now 😂
Turn this into a book and call it 'The ABC's of design'
The interior design video I’ve been looking for, thank you!
This was super helpful for me! I've known that I like American Colonial, Art Deco, and Dark Academia, but it never really clicked that it's because they all favor darker colors, lots of wood, and have a weight to them. I've got a better idea of how to start visualizing my future house now.
I liked how he gave a mention to "Light Academia", too, as it fits well with the Amer Colonial and Traditional styles I favor, yet without being quite so heavy as the Dark Academia.
Hi Nick! You forgot: 1. Bloomsbury Group - led by Vanessa Bell (sister of Virginia Woolf) and Duncan Grant. Very eccentric with painted furniture, painted walls, painted fireplaces and painted crockery. It lightened up the post Victorian era. 2. British Aristocrat - oversized art and furniture, heavy with textiles and books, eccentric and lots of gilt. (Sometimes looks struggling - like broke Aristocrat.) 3. Native American - bigger than Southwestern because cultural for all of the entire continent - Canada, America and South America. Thanks - what a fun video! 💐 💐
Wow! Quite a triumph! Thank you and God bless you, Nick.
Oh yes!👏 encore! Encore!
This video is something I can hang many other interior design videos on as structural support. Thank you!
I would have loved a mention of British colonial but I guess tropical is under that umbrella,, love the relaxing feel of being at a resort that I'll never be able to afford 😊
My favourites:
04:46 Chinoiserie
09:16 French Provincial
15:45 Moroccan
16:10 Neoclassic
I like coastal without all the fish and naval stuff. I like the color pallet and the airy look of it. i grew up in Florida, so it makes me nostalgic.
My husband and I struggled to identify our personal styles on our rehab house, and this video really helped. Thanks Nick!
You really outdid yourself here Nick. Totally enjoyed this CRASH course in style.
Kudos to you on a fantastic presentation paired with photographic examples.
Informative and entertaining.
Wow! Fantastic.
Every design client should watch this before meeting a designer to hire!!
THANK YOU!
This is one of my favorite channels.
Wow. Thank you! As an architect, I really appreciate learning a vocabulary I can use to describe interiors in an abbreviated way.
They didn't teach you history of architecture styles in school?! One of the first classes I took as an interior designer was history for interior design & architecture from the stone age to the present. Took 2 classes to cover it all.
You just made it very clear to me why I don't have a specific style... There are way too many great ones to choose from.
Thank you for putting so much valuable information in one video. If you ever feel like it, I would love a series where you talk about each style in a longer format...
What a great overview of the styles. Thank you
This is like a 25 minute history recap of interior design. Nice job!
Nick this video is everything! I would really love if you could make videos like this for the styles that “over-lap” but focusing on their differences to help your audience develop more of an eye for interior design. I’m sure this video alone was a TON of work. I applaud you and appreciate your efforts. I hope to see more like this.
Like a venn diagram of styles
Hi
This video is so helpful and informative! It also made me realize how euro-centric American design is and how many styles (chinoiserie, African, etc) are interpreted thru the lens of their previous colonizers aka oppressors. It’d be great if you could do a video showcasing the authentic styles of these countries
I'm thinking there is no "American" style, unless you go native American. Southwestern is probably the closest you will get to true Native American style. We are imitators of the places we came from.
Very helpful❤🎉
I would 1000% watch an in-depth series on these different design styles!
This was a lot of information about the different styles, shared with knowledge from your expertise. Thank you.
Great video! ❤ I don't think I've yelled absolutely not so many times watching a video. 😂 Some design styles I can appreciate without wanting to live in. Some, looking at you post modern, make my teeth hurt looking at them. 😂
I'm mid-century modern and related all the way.
ETA- Anything involving an egg chair has my blessing.
I would also gladly watch an extremely long version of this. I sent this video to my aunt to help her google inspo for her house.
Very informative❤
Fun introduction to the many design styles. I would love to see a video dedicated to Art Deco.
This video is a magnum opus to a love of design curated for UA-cam mass consumption. Brilliant & well worth every second of it's 25 minutes.
Just fabulous!! I found some new styles I've not heard of. You are a gem.
Wow your magnum opus no doubt. This was so much fun to watch. It took us so long to finish as we kept stopping and discussing. Definitely will go on my watch again list. Thanks
Thank you for including steam punk as a style. Made my day!
This is your best segment ever. This needs to be a coffee table book. Great work!
Nick, you should write a book with all these design styles. I'd love to have it for reference 🥰
This was super helpful and informative - thank you! There are two styles that I love, but didn’t see here: 1. Island style / colonial Caribbean and 2. SE Asian colonial, either French or British found all over Asia from South Asia all the way to Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam. Balinese style could also be its own vibe.
Island style!!! thank you. I was calling it Castaway but that works too.
I know what you mean, with in laws that live in a former British colony that is in the Caribbean it is definitely a different style.
Ah I know you what you mean. I call it Indochine after the film.
Definitely agree on this.. Indochine, pacific island, China, Peranakan, Bali, tropical are my favourite too.
Yes, loved this video, but British Colonial style seemed to be conspicuously absent.
“Art Nouveau … drawing inspiration from nature, things like … fairies” 😁🧚
👏👏👏
Great informative video. Thanks, Nick
This was the design video I have wanted for 30 years. Great job.
This is your best video ever...concise, clear and inclusive
Organic Modern, Scandinavian and Pacific Northwestern are definitely my favourites. Love the concept of this video! Wouldn't be surprised if it goes viral. Thank you for this.
This was an excellent video. Intelligently presented thank you. But your 2023 April fools video is still my favorite.
Wow that was awesome. You ran thru those so fast (in a good way) and I think I need to go back and rewatch it again and take notes. Awesome video!
This was such a helpful video. I feel like I've always known what styles I like, but now I have the vocabulary to articulate what I want in my space. Thank you Nick!
Concise, clear, inclusive...good job!
I have already watched it twice. I know I will watch it a few more times. Wish I could blow up each photo to study it.
You definitely deserve more recognition and views! Thank you for your knowledge!!
The most comprehensive and to-the-point video on this topic! You could always break it into three or four videos and make your job easier..but you didn’t and for that I thank you so much! Now we have one of the best videos to consult! ❤..and in alphabetical order too!! 😊
Applause for explaining all these different design styles while holding in personal opinion! 👏 Very informative and eye opening. We are slowly designing our home and I loved the breakdown and photo examples. It made it very easy for me to distinguish between different pieces I own and I am looking at. Farm house was one I could tell you struggled with, but you got through! Love it! Love you❤
The BEST summary of design styles, ever!!!
I loved this one! Watched it 5 times and I’ll probably watch it again…
I love watching your videos. This was by far my favorite! It really showed me what I don't care for at all and, more importantly, what I really love--transitional, arts and crafts, rustic, modern farmhouse. I have heard you talk about many, many of these styles and am aware of the ones that you don't particularly like. Great video!!
My favorites
Biophilic 3:48
Eclectic 7:15
Industrial 12:11
Japanese 12:58
Japandi 13:27
Mid-century modern 14:50
Minimalist 15:27
Moroccan 15:57
Organic Modern 16:34
Post modern 18:04
Scandinavian 18:40
Southwestern 19:41
I actually agree, except for Japanese and Moroccan.
I think that would make you eclectic!
This is a super cool video; really appreciate it! My ideal version of this would be this, but with the same or very similar spaces shown again and again in different styles, to get a sense of how they might compare to one another more directly.
You are sitting in a new chair! I love it.
Just when I was admiring your restraint…You had to mention a sign in the farmhouse😅
Extremely interesting and fun! You did a great job covering these styles and showing examples of them. I thoroughly enjoyed this! Thank you for your hard work!!
What an amazing video! Thank you! I especially loved how beautifully you described the styles, provided great examples, without interpolating your own judgements, so the viewers can be inspired by what attracts us and not doubt or feel shamed by our own tastes! This must have taken so much time to create, thank you!!!
100% number 1 video on the internet. Fast, informative, and fun! Thank you!!!
omg idk if anyone else plays House Flipper and The Sims and stuff but this just gave me SO much inspiration for styles to decorate with, haha! So many styles I didn't even know existed, and also I now have much more clarity on the differences between a few of the really similar ones. Thank you for this, I'd LOVE indepth looks at some of these in the future! This is AMAZING.
NICK! Is Victorian not a design style??? My entire home is based on the Victorian era!!! Is it just considered an era???... You did a fantastic job on this video, btw! I don't know anyone else who could blow out so much info so quickly ❤❤❤❤
Same! I was waiting for it.
Yes, I was wondering from the start if such an iconic style would be included.
@@beebeebop3405 what could be larger than these 2 styles? i know steam punk isn't!
The thing about Victorian style is there isn't just one Victorian style. Gothic for example, which he covered here, is one of Victorian styles popular in the mid-19th century. But you also had styles such as Neoclassical (and sub-categories Greek Revival, Egyptian Revival, etc), Louis XIV, Eastlake, Art Nouveau (which he covered here), etc. It's important to keep in mind the Victorian era covered a span of over 60 years. So, in my opinion at least, there isn't really a simple "Victorian" style. Just my two cents.
Also a book I really liked when I was younger and super into Victorian decor was "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Victoriana (A Comprehensive Guide to the Designs, Customs, and Inventions of the Victoria Era)" by Nancy Ruhling. It's not JUST interior/architectural design, but it does have a lot of info on it and I always found it fancinating. Not a deep dive on one topic, of course, but it can help you identify which aspects of Victoriania you like and then you can do more research from there. :)
You are absolutely amazing!! Awesome. This was one of the most informative videos that I've seen. Your wealth of knowledge is endless and priceless......Bravo
I genuinely love your videos. You are a masterpiece yourself, and so good at what you do. Thank you for all your information. We really appreciate you.
BRAVO!!! That was a ln amazing feat!!! You DEFINITELY deserve major kudos for getting all that info out in a short period of time!! I learned a lot about the differences and how definitions matter. Thank you for such an informative vid!
I never knew there were that many design styles. I can see the overlap between styles. Guess we have Coastal Contemporary, but it’s a collection of things through out our lives that makes us happy and comfortable in our house. ❤
Very helpful and so many styles to choose what you like❤🎉
Nick, thank you for putting together this episode.
If this video does not get ❤ and 👍, nothing could. I love how you put all info together for us with the right pictures, not all UA-cam videos are for visual presentation but I don'ts want to miss one photo on your video Nick.
Nick, I think it would be cool to do a series evaluating famous movie set styles. Some of these movie sets have beautiful interior designs. The Great Gatsby for Art Deco, Lord of the Rings for Art Nouveau, etc.
I thought my decorating style was Traditional/Contemporary but now I know it's actually Coastal/Transitional! That helps SO much! No wonder I couldn't find things to update my house. I now have a specific section to look. Things sometimes have gotten too hodgepodge when I've tried to make them work and it doesn't look right. Thanks Nick!
Amazing!! Short but so informative, and now you one can go deeper in the styles that interest you. Thank you Nick, love your videos!
This was great, Nick. The Start of a great coffee table book from you. 💡 ❤
I so appreciate your efforts in putting this together. It certainly helps to clarify those labels!
So rare I leave comments but this video was hands down SO HELPFUL! I can finally put some words to my aesthetic design style. Love your channel and sense of humour! Thank you!
Great video Nick. Informative, engaging, well put together (as always), more serious too (though I also likethe ones with more humour). I appreciate you went in alphabetical order, so easy to refer back to.
I had no idea there were so many different styles! Thanks for this labor of love video!
Wow I can see the work that you put into assembling this video. Yes there are overlaps in styles and I like that. One thing I miss seeing is Victorian. Not the museum-like rooms of a few decades ago. More livable rooms that are still in keeping with the original principles. There are so many Victorian homes where the current owners want to show their appreciation of that style while fitting into today’s way of life.
Fantastic presentation. Some of them I was familiar with, but so many I was not! I definitely fall in a few categories! Great job, Nick.
Loved this video! You always hear about the different design styles, but you never see a good explanation of them. Very informative - thanks for the info!
I love this bite size overview of different styles, would love to see you go into details for each and everyone one of them in another video.
Wow! A deep dive, for sure. I immediately recognized the styles that appeal to me, but definitely appreciated some others that I'd like to investigate. Incredible content!!
Very beautiful styles and informative❤
Hi! No chance you’d consider doing like a series where you cover a few interlocking styles and how they differ?
I’d also love to see videos on the sourcing process! Like how does one take an inspiration picture and find products that are similar or evoke that image at different price points
Thank You,Nick!!! AMAZING video that needs to be shared far and wide!!!!♥💗
This video is like a encyclopedia of design references, I’ll keep it for my future projects ❤
Omg, I have loved your channel for a while but this video blew my mind! I work as a professional digital designer and would like to someday do interior design work in a more professional capacity too, so this primer helped so many trends I’ve observed “click” into place. Thank you for this!
Enjoy your birthday week. This video must have taken you quite some time to put together. Thank you for a well thought-out , planned informational interior design presentation. I found it extremely helpful and enjoyable.❤
Industiral and Art Deco are SUCH A VIBE! I've seen a house with a mix of those two somewhere on the internet and I've been LUSTING after a house like that ever since.
They speak to me on a very personal level and it's a shame we don't see much Art Deco anymore.
Mind blown. Whew. Don't know how you got through all of that with your humor intact.
I've always thought my preferred style was Traditional, but after watching this I realize it's actually Transitional. Thank you so much Nick, this was incredibly eye opening. I am so happy to be a new subscriber!
This is fantastic, thank you so much for doing this, Nick!
50 Design Styles!!! Only the Great Nick Lewis could do it! 😀😀😀❤
Havent even started watching but ive been waiting for someone to do a video on more than five!!
