Well, they tell us that " Brave Cops " stationed at both ends of bridge stopped traffic saving many lives. If that report is true then why did we see big trucks crossing only seconds before that ship took down the bridge? Something isn't right.

To all the people wondering why the bridge fell so easily- no bridge will withstand getting hit by a ship this large.
There’s zero protection around the pillars if you look at Google maps
I bet there are some with enough protection around their piers ... But there are also a LOT with just some channel bollards like this bridge had. No chance against 200 million pounds at 8 knots.
U r absolutely right, no bridge can take a DIRECT hit like this. That is why we should prevent a ship this large from DIRECTLY hitting the main structural support in the first place.
It's true but the bridge was built in 1972 and large fenders designed to direct marine traffic away from the bridge supports or an island built around the pier could have been built, but nothing was done over the years despite the increasing size of vessels. In the end, tug escorts should be compulsory until any large vessels crosses the bridge. Essentially, nothing was done to prevent these kinds of events over the years.

I live 5 miles from the bridge and felt the rumble when it went down. Several other people thought it was thunder from a storm coming up. I grew up in the little town 2 miles from the bridge. It had steep ramps because the deck had to be so high for cruise ships and cargo ships to get into the harbor. I was stunned when it came on the news around 2am. I've driven over it many, many times. So sad. Love to all from Baltimore.

Being a naval architect, I notice the pronounced flare of the ship's bow, being typical for all ships designed for carrying containers on deck (requiring max beam up close to the bow in order to facilitate more containers).
This means that the impact with the A-shaped pillars (viewed from the ship) was at THE SHIP's DECK LEVEL while the slimmer hull at the waterline was clear of the solid river-bed concrete slab into which the pillars trancend.
Pay close attention to the ship collision with bridge's pillars at 5:34. Strangely there are no plumes of concrete dust emanating from the impact point at the deck level of the ship.
However, plumes of concrete dust can clearly be seen shooting away at the base, far below the actual impact level. Not just on the inclined pillars facing the ship, but strangely enough also on the ones facing away from the impact.
Video taken by drones in daylight of the damaged bridge, shows that all the four A-shaped concrete pillars were snapped off at the base where they trancend into the solid river-bed concrete slab.
How can this be explained?
Bet up the state is kicking itself now considering they rejected putting the pier bumpers to protect this bridge. Morons !!

Those bumpers would stop some much smaller boats/ships but consider that a 100,000 ton sheared off the whole support. No bumpers could have shipped it.

I grew up in Baltimore, and drove over that bridge thousands of times, but never thought this was a possibility. There was another video breakdown by an engineer, who made the most valid point out of all of this [Paraphrase only, NOT a direct quote from that streamer]: "The first blackout was the main power failing." "Then you see black smoke, the indicator for emergency power." "Sadly the backup failed too, which should NEVER HAVE HAPPENED."
Is there anyone here who actually can summarize the events? In context: you must know about ports, maritime laws, shipping containers, and cargo vessel design, procedure, policy, and implementation of certain rules that govern these ships through any and all ports through the world, including the US of course. I do not know these things, and WILL NOT pretend to know to jump into a conversation.

There is no bridge in the world that would have withstood an impact on a main support from a ship that big going that speed.
This video shows two blackouts. It also shows that initially, the ship’s course was too tight. Then you see that the ship is trying to slow down, apparently at full throttle backwards, as it suddenly produces black smoke. Because of this attempt to stop the ship at full power, the ship’s aft is moving to port, so that the bow is moving towards the pillars of the bridge. At that point the ship is still moving forward, directly towards the pillars.
In my opinion, if the captain wouldn’t have tried to stop the vessel but instead would have given extra power forward, steering away from the pillars, it would not have hit the bridge.
The Captain also dropped the Port anchor! Thats the reason for the sharp turn to Starboard shortly before impact.

Its actually really lucky. 90 seconds from the mayday call to the bridge collapse. Police cars were on location to enforce a slow speed zonr for construction when they got the call to close the bridge.

After looking at bridges in the bay area, compared to that bridge, that bridge has zero protection on the pillars for as many ships that cross there, you think there would be a barrier
Why does it appear as though the ship turn to starboard(right) and right into bridge support, almost like that's what it meant to do.
At the same point the ship lost power, another current enters the main shipping lane from the ship’s right side, which pushed the rear of the ship to the left. The ship’s master had the bow anchor dropped at about that time, which also started the ship turning slightly.
When the power came back on, the rudder was not working (there’s a light that lights up the bow when the rudder is working, and it doesn’t light up for some time, and almost as soon as it did, the power went out again.
If they did try to reverse the engines, that would have dragged the rear of the ship to the left, and we don’t know what position the rudder was in when the power went out.
At this point, the ship is starting to veer to the right. It’s still in the shipping lane, but as it keeps moving forward to the right, it heads toward the tower.
One Canadian marine expert said that any of these things can happen at any time, and if you’re at sea, it makes no difference. But here, it became “the perfect storm.”

Seeing all of them big rigs go across the bridge before it was taken down. That is eerie. I drive a truck as well, and I have been over that bridge at that time of the night.
The same type of accident happened in Florida back in the 80s. Cars and if I remember correctly, a bus went down with it.

This video is sourced from the upload by StreamTime Live's cliped upload and not from the stream itself. The upload is just a cropped screen recording of their own stream with some added weird color and sharpness filters which just take away more detail. The actual stream was in 1080p60 and has much different colors. I have a copy of that original stream screen capped at 1080p60 H264 at 8.5 mbps for four minutes before collapse, at collapse, and three hours after words. Quality is much different compared to their upload on the official account. But I don't blame you for using this upload as the original stream was not saved and the rewind of it was long gone by the time many became aware of it.

Thank you for the detailed information. I am wondering why their was no Tug accompanying the cargo vessel until it passed the bridge safely? These Jumbo cargo vessels should not be allowed into estuaries anymore. Before they finish pointing the finger of blame, which ultimately will be the captain, lets send some compassionate thoughts of healing to the families surviving the deaths related to this incident. How tragic.

Tugs did pull it out then dismissed. A USA md pilot captain was at the helm in full charge of the ship as they always are going in and out of ports. Mechanical failure would not be the fault of a captain.
There were vehicles on that bridge just seconds before it collapsed.
The work crew vehicles
Police managed to close the entrances to the bridge only 30 seconds before someone who went on the bridge would have gone down with it. Incredibly fast reaction time. An officer was already driving towards the worker vehicles to warn them but it collapsed first. The officer was not on the part that collapsed yet when it happened.
This was an entirely preventable accident. Totally inadequate pier protection allowed the ship to strike one of the main bridge piers. This didn't have to happen.
It definitely appears that the ship turned way too soon and could have avoided the collision if it were piloted properly, even though it was experiencing mechanical and electrical difficulties.
The motorists and truck drivers were extremely fortunate to have gotten across before the bridge collapsed. It is very unfortunate that the work crew on the bridge were not able to evacuate before the collision occurred, and it is a miracle that one of them did survive at all. There was no way apparently, to ensure their safety in this particular incident.
My prayers go out to their immediate families and their relatives and friends.

With the technology currently available, it should be possible to provide a warning when a collision course is eminent, and have a way to stop traffic before they get on the bridge.

I'll say it again: i think the pilot "balked" at going under the bridge because of the flashing lights up there (constr crew & police cars). He may have thought there was a work crew suspended under the span on a gantry & tried to reverse. (An accident happened many yrs ago @ Verrazzano bridge with work crew on lower roaddeck when fuel barge passed below at that moment). Would love to know if Dali had filed a "Proceedure Plan" to pass under Key Bridge. Just a thought...
5:41 notice the truck sitting on the bridge to the right of the center of the bridge with flashing lights. This was the road crew or construction company truck.

Maybe bridges should all have proximity alarms. Once a big ship gets to close alarms go off and entrances on automatically close. Loud alarms sound and tell drivers to exit as quickly as possible.
It was not explosives, there’s power lines that run across the top of the bridge, it is those lines breaking at collapse, your clearly seeing sparks not explosions

As awful a tragedy as this was, I can't believe that there were not more casualties from this than there were. No vehicles It looks like just the road crew fixing potholes. Two survived, incredibly. The other six, RIP, you and your families are in my prayers. I never saw a structure of that size just go down like that...
The cops stopped traffic on the bridge when they heard the ship was out of control. It probably saved some lives. They also were trying to warn the maintenance crew but I don’t think they would have had time to get off in time.
The ship’s crew alerted authorities when they lost power and started to drift. Port authorities alerted a construction crew on the bridge. I believe that the construction crew managed to shut down traffic on one end of the bridge.

It went down just as expected, engineering wise. This was of a cantilever design without any redundancy. In these designs a failure in any one part will propagate to the rest of the structure. Many bridges are built of this design. There is nothing unique about this particular bridge.

I know it’s the angle and depth of field that makes it deceiving, but it almost looks like had they not try and turn, they would’ve not hit the pylon.

You can see two white flashes go off just as the bridge snapped. One was on left top of the bridge. The other is top right side of the bridge. The bridge snapped exactly at both those white flashes!!!
With all the HD Camera footage of this bridge, it should be easy going back through the footage to see who & when someone climbed the top rails of the bridge supports. I am not an expert! Just what I seen by pausing the video at many intervals to see in slow motion.
I think Someone planned this bridge collapse in my opinion but it’s my uneducated guess. Hopefully they will find the real reason for this tragedy and loss of life.

In a world full of cameras everywhere, WHY in the hell there’s only one freaking view point of this incident.
But I agree that was not an accident, the entire section fell at the precise moment of impact. Besides under the cover of darkness and lack of cameras from the bridge entrance and exit locations, it’s the perfect set up.

Take a look at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse in Tampa in 1980; also the case of a vessel (smaller than this one) striking a bridge support and bringing that bridge down. Everything isn't a plot by the "deep state." Only weak minds need to pretend that they have insider knowledge that makes them feel "special." Unless you're a bridge engineer or involved in the maritime industry, you know NOTHING. Why not take up knitting or something useful?

I’m not convinced or convinced we’ll even be told the truth. When that Cargo ship started having issues and loosing power it wasn’t heading straight towards the Bridge but in the final minutes it turned directly towards the Bridge Support. Best defense is the investigators and our Government will do everything possible to attribute this to anything but intentional.

It can be appreciated how many interpret the swerve of the ship as 'deliberate' but it was apparently the way physics works when trying desperately to stop such an unstoppable object as a large, heavily laden freight vessel. I wonder what the intended course was - whether it was to the left or right of the pillar that was struck. Try as I may I cannot see any evidence of charges detonating, too. Maybe that's just fevered imaginations at work.
It was supposed to go to the right of the pillar; however, when it lost propulsion, the current pushed it to the left and into the pillar.

That truck was crushed by the steal beams that sandwiched the truck between the road and steel.
Minneapolis experienced something similar years ago. It devastated the community and traffic for years. City officials are heartless towards citizens. We are pawns and votes to them more than beating hearts. When there aren’t contingencies for things like this it reminds me of how ill prepared government was for Covid. We are forced to pay taxes to people who continue to allow us to die in avoidable situations. Disgusting. Condolences to the families.

No Tugboats in sight, astonishing
In Baltimore they don't use tug boats. Instead a native captain drives the ship in/out of port.
They used tugs when it started from the port about half an hour earlier. And when it lost control the tugs headed back to it, but couldn’t reach it in time.
They were present and dismissed. All systems were fine and then epic failure. It happens more than you know all around the world

It appears that this ship actually accelerated because if you look at the stacks you will notice thick exhaust smoke suddenly appears.

The black smoke could be the engines coming back up to pressure after the power outage, it could be the engines going into reverse, and some marine experts have said that in recent years, changes in grades of diesel fuel sometimes result in dirty combustion at certain times.

Nothing unusual about shipping dangerous goods. Improperly handled, you'd be surprised what common items are considered to be dangerous cargo. Walk through your local hardware DIY retail store and a fair percentage of the merchandise offered is potentially flammable, corrosive, reactive or otherwise harmful if mishandled. How do you think that stuff got to the store - Santa's sleigh?? Whether moved by land, rail or sea, nobody cares about them unless there's an accident. Then the indignation that the stuff was allowed to be moved around.
That ship should have had tug boats. Focus on changing that rule for all larger ships on inland waterways. Other nonsense like the nationality of the crew and ship's flag state and what's in the cargo is only relevant to the people who need to book the paperwork clean the mess up. The NTSB will dive deep into anything that may be even slightly relevant before it's done, @KayInMaine. Cheers.

All around the world - not counting the US - hard working taxpayers pays for bridges, tunnels, roads, rail roads etc. That’s the guaranty for not making any shortcuts in places that may be important if a collision should happen.

@michaellaughlin8457 The footage is from a 24/7 video camera feed. There are lots of those cameras with their own web pages that can be viewed by anyone. Popular sites are of picturesque town streets in winter, tropical island markets, famous aquatic tanks (RIP, Murphy the MBU puffer fish), marine traffic at famous seaports (I check out some of them from Rotterdam to see the monster ships come and go) and skyline views from several supertall buildings all over the globe.
There are wondrous and amusing things available if we can avoid falling into self-affirming conspiracy-media pitfalls. Cheers.

Bridge must have been built by the lowest bidder. Those supports look a little flimsy to me. Seems with all the traffic underneath they would have built stronger supports to hold it up just in case.

What in the world are you talking about? There's no bridge that's going to take a hit from a 100k-200k ton ship moving at 8 or so knots. They simply are not designed for this type of impact. Nor are they designed to stay up without supports.

The american way of building bridges. In Europe, and Denmark in particular, bridges is buildt by the use of steel reinforced concrete. They can take a massive blow if they should be hit by a ship. The Danish Storebælt bridge has previous been hit by a ship, but with very little damage.
Old bridge, built in’72, using old standards. Still hard to believe that the ship aligned perfectly to make a hit on the pylon & take it down…🤔
