- Jump ring cutting with a Dremel tool.
This is how I make jump rings with a nice square cut.
Using a grinder has advantages over wire cutters.First, it is much quicker than using wire cutters. Second, you will end up with a nicer cut that is free from sharp burrs.
A square cut jump ring looks much better when it's closed because the seam will be less noticeable. In this video I show my jump ring cutting set-up which is easy to put together and works extremely well.
You, sir, are a genius. Thank you for sharing this with us!! I had been racking my feeble brain to make a Dremel work for this, but you have already solved this!
A friend saw this video. As I’ve been tearing up my hands cutting each link. Thank you! This will be such a hand saver. And so much easier to create more fun pieces!!!!!!!!
This is the simplest, fastest setup I've found so far. Thanks for sharing this 🤘
Ive been hand cutting my rings till now, I have a Dremel sitting on the bench staring at me, now i feel like it was laughing at me .. :D this is a great simple setup thanks .. my hands are thankfull :)
I tried a jeweler's saw with 14 gauge wire wrapped around a wooden dowel. OMG! Broke two blades and then gave it up until my wounded shoulder heals more. This dremel action is what I was looking for. But I am so new to all of this. Ambitious, but I know what I don't know which is practically everything 🤣🤣🤣. Why did I have to fall in love with chaimmaille jewelry? I'm a die hard paper crafter🤣🤣🤣
same here, kicking myself after a ten year break from jewelry -goes to cut her jump rings with a hand saw and about to loose her ***** so she's googling and sees this - also with her dremel sitting in front of her. LOL
Absolute brilliance. 10/10 for ingenuity.
I'm glad I found your video I've had a quarter of a mile if 14g of aluminum wire waiting for an easy way to cut jump rings from since tin snips tend to cut it then bend the wing at the same time awesome idea
Best jump ring video EVER!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I used scrap from other projects to make mine and probably overcomplicated it, but it works and will get me through until I can afford a more precise one.
Great idea, I love it!! Thank you very much. :)
Thank you! That is perfect!
Have got to say in all honesty I have made this idea of yours a bit of adjusting some wasted rings not at all a failure very much a pleasure to work with compared to cutting by hand pliers and hack saws this is a mechanical marval art form most simplistic thank you
Great idea!
BRILLIANT!!!
Thanks for visualisation of that idea! :)
very interesting Ill have to try this since I have 10,000 rings to cut thanks
very.very good idea👍
Also to save wear and tear on ur Dremel, use a wee bit of spray lubricant of your choice or beeswax on the coil b4 cutting. Great video and thank you.
where can I get a blade like that that will cut through steel?
Dude. Seriously thank you
I have been thinking about a design like this for a while for steel and galvanized metal since HSS Jewelers saw blades just dull to fast and they cost a lot more. Thanks for showing us your rig if you have anything else like this PLEASE enlighten us.
Wow! You MUST do a video with a simpler set up for us dremel owners who have barely touched that drill in over 20 years. Pretty please with sugar on top. What attachment or blade are you using? You got me all excited here❤❤❤. TFS!
Excelente método de corte.
Out of all the homemade devices and gadgetry, this idea by far is simplest don't think it's got to be steal rod a wooden dowel may work well and expendable rings are many sizes dowels are easy to find at the home depot
I like your idea thanks so much for sharing it going to the bench now
Great...simple and quick....question...how do you make the bar holder
That's really a very nice idea been fighting with a few ideas my self we're things don't always go as planned will give this idea a spin no puns intended question there no sparks is that aluminum your coils are made of and the bar your using is it wood or a piece of steel want to be as close to your perfection as possible
Thank you for sharing
This is awesome! Now I don't have to spend $200 for a jump ring cutting kit.
You might if your cutting Steel.
Genius!!!
What gauge, and what material, were you cutting when you made this video? Looks like 14g steel but I'd like to be sure my poor dremel could handle that. Any certain discs I need to be using to cut something that heavy?
I've done stuff like this before I don't think it should matter what gauge are using it will still cut it but it will just be slower
nice video
Fantastic idea, how do you get rid of burrs? Well done :)
Awesome idea. Thank you.
This is so good. What blade do you use?
How did you make the coil? Great gizmo!
How is the cylinder bar stabilized? Is the bolt going through the bar? Or is the bar resting on the bolt? Wish there was a picture of the other side.
hermoso!
Question: Will this work well with steel rings?
What kind of blade are you using and also would it work with steel rings ?
McMaster-carr has Item # 6448A23, and item #4568A12 that might be better.. Width of cut is 0.015" (0.381mm). Dremels EZ Abrasive Cut off wheels, I've measured are 0.0450" (1.143mm). Only problem is.. McMaster charges like $18 for a single blade. If I'm going to be cutting dead soft silver, copper, gold wire, then I honestly don't think it's going to be a problem.
The benefit.. If you make your jump rings at X inner diameter, then when you go to cut the rings and then solder them, less material lost, and the rings inner diameter will be much closer to the inner diameter that they were meant to be. Figured I'd help ya, seeing how your video gave me a really good idea how to cut my jump rings better, instead of buying a $400 Ringinator, or the other stupid thing that's online that makes jump rings. (+1 : 1)
This seems great, but I can't find a saw blade that will cut through metal without overheating and discoloring it, even with lubrication. What kind of blade is that?
But how do you fit the tube in the drill? That's my only problem right now.
hey man, is there any way that you can show us the other side of your jig that has the vice grips on, id just like to see how you have them attached please and thankyou :)
I'm kinda wanting to get in to making chain mail and celtic style chains, whats a good cheap source of sturdy wire for such things?
i spent about $75 on galvenized electric fence wire, i have about 1/2 mile of it and have been using what i bought for years without needing to buy more, and to get the zinc off so its just steel rings i use a 1:3 ratio of bleach and water, the bleach disolves the zinc, making salt and zinc oxide with minimal fumes so its safer to do in doors than to melt it off. hope this helped you out.
I'm late to the party, but you can also use a coil of rebar tie wire, also known as black wire. It should be bare mild steel in 16 or 14 gauge, but it will be dirty so use gloves and or rinse in vinegar.
how is that bar being held up can you do another video giving us a 360 view as we can see the back part. Trying to do something similar but having issues with holding the bar steady.
He said he uses a clamp. He shows himself tightening it before he shows the cutting of the first coil.
Guessing this is aluminum rings VS my 14g steel rings. I have sparks flying everywhere.
Would this work with an angle grinder?
I don't see why not. As long as your cutting disk is thin like the dremel disk, and I guess if you take off the safety guard, you can even use a worn down disk (smaller diameter). The larger the cutting disk, the more jump ring coils it would be cutting through simultaneously.
What kind of cutting wheel is he using ?
👌👌👌👌👌
I found a wide selection of steel rods at Ace Hardware - now - how can I get a slot cut into the rod so it's straight. The slot doesn't need to go the full length of the rod - correct? Thanks a bunch ! ! !
After setting up this jig, use the Dremel to cut the slot.
Don't tighten the swivel down to much. This slot could also be used to hold wire when coilling
where do you get your wire
The dermal and the blade don’t get over heated?
That's an abrasive blade I've used them to cut steel bolts before, with the steel glowing red hot around the cut and the blade is fine, might wear a bit quicker idk, but overall it's fine Dremel didn't overheat either
Might want to wear a mask or respirator when cutting galvanized wire, zinc is no good for the lungs. Other than that, this is GENIUS and i will be trying it soon
the zinc that comes off is a tiny amount though so unless you're cutting thousands of rings you SHOULD be fine. I would still wear a respirator though...
@@sepiathesquirrelofmistmant1516 wear a respirator.
Seems could be challinging for small dia rings (4-6 mm)
what if you donot need jump rings that big
I have been using bolt cutters and I have hatedhow they cut for a little while now, I dont have to anymore
what a guy-have you seen the price of themPEPE american jobbys for doing similar thing, brill idea sir
