I had never heard of Eula Beal before , but was just trying to find great Contraltos . I love the sound of mezzo sopranos and Contralto voices , more than soprano . Some really great arias have been written for them too . This is a truly beatiful voice and great singer .
Look at her, a perfect instrument! She is so true to the text and music. And I didn't know she existed until now. I wish I knew about her before she left this world. Amazing...no diva here, just a singer, but a perfect singer!
What a voice! My goodness! Choice between a contralto and a soprano? I’ll take the contralto any day if the week. She’s lovely...in every sense of the word.
There`s something extra touching about contralto voices,I think, maybe because of the dark timbre,it`s better suited for conveying sad emotions. I don`t know. I`m biased though, cause I`m a contralto too hehe.
Definitely biased, but you also have a very intimate knowledge of a contralto voice. I agree, lower women's and higher men's voices seem to lend themselves so well to bittersweet music :) makes me wish I were a singer
This is my very first time listening to Eula Heal, & I absolutely love it! It's moments like this that make me want to sing contralto, but alas! I'm a 1st soprano. Eula's voice is amazing, so warm and at the same time so golden, especially in the middle register.
What a VOICE! A real shame we don't have much of this woman's inimitable voice! However, I did read somewhere that Miss Beal chose to marry and have a family. Too bad for those of us who love her charming , most wonderful voice. But that would be selfish, I know. It would be interesting to know just how happy her life turned out to be. Could this song tell us anything? I play this many, many times, and cannot believe how moved I feel every single time.BRAVA, Miss Beal! And, THANK YOU!
Che bellissima voce! I was not at all familiar with her previously. What a marvelous contralto voice. And what a great pity for us opera lovers that Ms. Beal essentially retired to get married and raise a family at a young age. This young lady would have had a great career given her truly superb voice.Grazie mille Signora Beal. Bravissima !
Beautiful! Lovely voice. I wasn't convinced she was actually a contralto after listening to some of her other work, but you can hear some contralto colours in this one. Perhaps more current mezzos than we think are actually contraltos.
Yeah, the contralto colors are very evident. I'm just confused by the people saying what a deep singer she is. She's barely singing below women's middle C! These people should listen to Zarah Leander, who sings an octave lower.
CraigFrancisSoto : thank you for the data. I imagined her voice was that of a contralto. Many people do not like that range of voice, but I like it, though it is very uncommon to hear a really good contralto. I like to hear that song when I am sad. The first time I heard it I had 16 yrs old, in a recording by Ezio Pinza. I haven't found never since then of that Bass. He was good too.
it's not that people don't like voices like that (Cher, Aretha Franklin and Karen Carpenter are/were all big names for a reason), it's that there's so few of them.
These female voices are a pure wonder...so sweet, so warm...what a pity i didn't find no cd from her by amazon... to have such a gift and not do anything about it...fortunately we have some recording in youtube !
No kidding her tone is one of the most beautiful I have EVA heart! Her tone is really cool! And the technique is perfect. For instance it is very difficult to sound round, open, and beatiful on an “E” bowel and she does!
Oh,Oh,Oh! From where does this Eula Beal come? I do love this unique voice...have never heard anything quite like it! Kathleen Ferrier and Dame Baker come about as close...but not to be compared. Somehow, I get the impression that this is a person from another age. Looking at her hair style, dress and general appearance of the room does that to me. Will look her up because I did enjoy this very sad, emotional piece. BRAVA Eula...whereever you may be. Thanks for the post!
A relatively obscure singer, Beal here delivers one of the finest versions of this incomparable Tchaikowsky song, despite the handicap of not singing it in Russian.
alontas- This piece was taken from a 1947 short film called 'Concert Magic'.Isn't her voice just marvelous, And a true contralto, not a mezzo. Che bellissima voce !
@@Idk-ub2yw I still think she is primarily a contralto. But whatever she is,she has a wonderful, resonant voice that no one today could even close to. Che bella voce!
What a superbly beautiful voice and singer . This is indeed real contralto singing . I have not heard Eula Beal before . I love the contralto voice and some mezzo soprano too . They say that Mezzo Sopranos are very Highly sexed , maybe contraltos too . Could it be that men fall in love with the more mellow sound of a woman's voice . I know I do .
@vstasov Yes, indeed, look, a perfect singer, with a perfect technique, and a royal stage appearance, yet, she knows that family should be above career. What a statement for each one of today's women, from someone who could have had all the fame in the world, if she would have wanted it!
Thank you for this upload. Just wondering if this is from 'Concert Magic', a film from the 1940s. My organ teacher spoke of her, but I had never heard of her before. He lived in Riverside and I was at The Univ. of Redlands at the time. I've read some of the commemts and would agree It is a shame there are not more recordings of her. I once heard a video of her singing Malotte's Lord's Prayer on A & E. Thanks again.
@Poet2916 yea. i'm a classical singer and classical contraltos have a higher range. Actually the contraltos i know also sing alot of mezzo-soprano literature. So yea i think it's safe to say that classical contraltos have a higher range than contraltos in other genres, probably because of the head voice being the dominant register.
It's my grandma's 80th birthday today and she has always said how she would like the piano musi for this song.. this is the version she has been talking about. if anyone knows where i can find it i wold appretitiate it alot if you could help me out, thank you :)
CraigFrancisSoto-It is my understanding that she was already very happily married, and simply chose that life of a housewife and mother, over fame and fortune. She was as good as it got!!
Tibbett has always been my favourite for this most moving song but this excellent version runs him close. Did she ever record "When all was young" ( Si la bonhour) from Faust?
@iamthebirdfearme Haha When i said little I meant like my voice isn't mature yet. Btw I check those mezzos out and they are amazing. Gives me something to look forward to in my music life. =)
One of the best singers this country has produced. Thanks for posting.
Absolutely perfect. awesome. She chose family over fame. I'm so thankful that her wonderful voice is preserved for us. Thank you, thank you.

The Composer and this angelic creature have defined the ultimate in classical ecstatic sound.

I'm a coluratura soprano, and this contralto sings like an angel!
Same!!! I could listen to her all day ❤️
Jesus!!!! love her voice!!! I found her because my daughter is contralto and the coach told me to her Eula cause my daughter can hit those notes.
The most beautiful voice I have ever heard (and I have heard hundreds, if not thousands.)
MarkLaCresta I agree!
What a voice! My goodness! Choice between a contralto and a soprano? I’ll take the contralto any day if the week. She’s lovely...in every sense of the word.
She has a beautiful, perfect, deep, warm voice. Thank you for her voice and the happiness she brings with it.
Maybe the best performance of this genial romance by Tchaikovsky. Thank you so much for this treasure!
I said it 10 months ago and after hearing all the others-I say again that this haunting version plays constantly in my mind! Unparalleled .
Belleza conmovedora. Divino Tchaikovsky!!!
Wonderful! Wonderful! I know nothing about this lady but her voice is Golden! Wonderful control and placement, she knew how to sing!

As a church musician, contralto is my favorite vocal range. Bach loved it as well.
A stunning rendition of one of Tchaikovsky's most beautiful pieces. What a wonderful true contralto voice !

She has an extraordinary voice. I so love listening to her sing.
Heartbreakingly beautiful.
Heartbreakingly beautiful. I'm left weak at the knees ! Sensational !
Such a wonderful voice and such deep feeling in this romance of Tchaikovsky as if it was written in English originally! thanks for posting!
Beautiful, wonderful contralto,,,,more feeling!
What a remarkable voice! I just wish there were more recorded examples of her singing available. Beautiful.
Addio bel Passato

Most current operatic mezzos are sopranos. A true mezzo voice is quite rare, and a contralto voice much rarer still
I heard her tonight for the first time on KCET and had to hear more. I'm grateful for this discovery at this late date (for her and for me).

This performance is from a film in 1947.
HOW have I not known of her all these years!

a beautful voice and a beautiful woman .
Beautiful singing !
Such a wonderful voice !
So controlled!!!!!!!!! Just gorgeous OMG

Magnificent! She must have been a wonderful person. I treasure the limited recordings she made.
Very lovely! Brava! TY James!
Magnificent!TY
This is what I call REAL ART!!!!
Divine, Superhuman! What a Contralto!
I love contralto. I wish I was one.....I'm just a little mezzo ='(
I have just fallen deeply in love with Eula Beal!
A beautiful song - beautifully sung. I wish Kathleen Ferrier had recorded a version.
Brava, a true Contralto!
Wow what a stunning voice!
so unusual and beautiful... i remembered stumbling across it months ago, she had a profound effect on me and had to hunt to find her again...
coming from the long past, very moving.
Incredible, and enduring,
Eccezionale! Che voce stupenda!

You must hear her sing, "The Lord's Prayer," she sing's a, tag at the end, it's stunning! She sing's, "Amen" twice, one must hear it.
Did she record that ? It isn't one UA-cam is it ?

Ingrid Bergman could have played her in a movie.
Absolutely 🙂👍

Heavenly, superhuman, there is no comparison, except with a category five hurricane of honey, sugar, and gold!
RIP Eula Beal, beautiful Contralto singer ever.

Wonderful voice, so powerful and moving. Anybody knows the approximate date of this recording?
1947 in a documental film called Concert Magic ... short afterwards she retired to family life.
