    - 0:02 Introduction to Imam al-Ghazali's autobiography, ‘Deliverance from Error' by Dr
    Mustafa Abu sway
    - 8:50 Imam al-Ghazali abandoned his position and distributed his wealth, displaying his sincerity and lack of concern for personal safety.
    - 18:00 The resemblance between sitting in France and the philosophy of Descartes and foundationalism.
(Interesting note here regarding handwritten notes in Descartes' book that quote Imam Ghazali in the margins, signifying Descartes may have indeed been influenced by Ghazali in regards to the notion of attaining "Absolute Truth."
    - 26:57 The last Imam lives in occultation, "hidden away somewhere."
    - 35:44 He could not solve the issue, leading to doubt and the potential for drinking.
    - 44:52The philosophers' beliefs on the existence and prime mover vary, and the Greeks today don't subscribe to those ancient ideas.
    - 53:42 In metaphysics, some people generalize their position, which shouldn't be the case.
    - 1:02:07 Islamic civilization can thrive regardless of the profession or trade, be it medicine, science, or craftsmanship.

@@hamadalkhalifa2323 asalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah my dear brother.
‘one of’ is what i used. i’m not denying there aren’t greater scholars by using that sentence structure.
furthermore, i assume you’re referring to sheikh ibn taymiyyah and ibn qayyim (may Allah have mercy on them both) when you say we have greater scholars? 1. in their books they have spoken positively about tasawwuf and those who are sufis in fact they were reported to have engaged in tasawwuf themselves and 2. many scholars from all generations since then have also labelled them (ibn taymiyyah and ibn qayyim) as deviant - although i take the middle path on this and appreciate the work they did which is in line with Islam and the views of Ahlus sunnah wa’l jammah and pass by their views which are deviant. no scholar is perfect. may Allah forgive them all and grant them jannatul firdous.
the scholars of traditional usooli islam have high praises for imam al-ghazali. the ulema i am sure are of better knowledge than you and i on this matter so i’d prefer to follow them in their opinion - although i do not disagree with you that he deviated in some areas but this doesn’t then mean his entire corpus of work goes in the bin.

Salams Paul… I’m very glad you have done this video about Imam Al-Ghazali because unfortunately he is not loved by some of our Muslim brothers. I absolutely love him to bits despite being an Athari myself. I have most of his major works in my library even his books on asharite aqeedah. Of course I have Darul minhaaj’s copy of إحياء علوم الدين but I also have his book تحصيل المآخذ an amazing book of evidence based comparative fiqh between the Shafi school and the Hanafi school it’s truly a masterpiece.
I have also his books on logic and his second most famous book in usulul fiqh المستصفى and his book in fiqh الخلاصة Darul minhaj edition. Imam Ghazali practiced tassawuf and didn’t just write about it.
He managed to quell sectarianism and stood against Hasan assabbaah the baatini leader at the time.
Tasawwuf is very important in Islam and Shaikhul Islam Ibn Taymiya رحمه الله affirms this in his books. Tasawwuf is the third pillar of the religion the first of which is Eeman followed by Islam and finalised with Ihsaan. From the Athari practitioners of tasawwuf is Imam Al-Buhooti the great Hanbali jurist and Assafaareeni and the Hanabila in general that are outside of sheikh Muhammad Ibn abdil Wahhab’s academic circles.
Imam Al-Ghazali is an Imam of ahlus Sunnah and he is loved by them and respected by others may Allah have mercy upon his soul Aameen. Well done again Paul 👍😊

When I became Muslim, I made true tawbah. Then I read 'deliverance of error' by Ghazali. It was as if I was reading a story of my own life. I was deluded, misguided, and full of error. Then I read Alchemy of happiness, ihya ulum ad din, my dear beloved son, etc. He is the first person I read and I saw myself in him. I owe him so much and I hope to be raised with him, the saints and Prophets. He gave birth to the west. Aquinas, DeCarte, etc owe him for their work. There would be no west without him yet how little they attribute to him? He is called "Hujjat Al-Islam" because he proved Islam and refuted all the arguments of the kuffar. Read his work and you will become silent by his sway over words and language. He is a mastermind. A polymath. A true genius. Not like these demonic geniuses. Some important corrections to what the speaker said:
    1. The Ta’limis refer to the Nizari Ismailis, not the twelver Shia. The name Ta’limi is used because the Nizari Ismaili Da’i Hasan Sabbah publicly presented a rational argument for the necessity of an infallible Imam - an argument which was very successful and promoted multiple refutations from Ghazali. In fact Ghazali accepted the argument and merely reframed it to lead to Sufism and mystical perception. Ghazali’s critique of reason and his argument that human intellect requires a judge above it is the same Ta’limi argument.
    2. Nizari Ismailis never used drugs or hashish. The speaker is engaging in petty slander and lies when he repeats this with zero proof. In all his works Ghazali never even says the Nizaris used drugs. This idea was invented by Europeans like Marco pollo who mistranslated the pejorative word ‘hashashin’ which means riff raff to mean ‘hashish eater’. In other words the Europeans invented the hashish myth.
    3. Nizari Ismailis don’t divinize human beings. The speaker seems to confuse Nizaris with Nusayri / Alawis. In fact these are two different Shia groups. Nizaris view the Imam in similar way to Twelver Shia and how Sunni Sufis view the Insan Kamil.
    4. Ghazali himself adapted several Ismaili cosmological ideas in his later writings - Mishkat al-anwar and Ma’arij al-quds. Both works of Ghazali contain Neoplatonic ideas like God creating the Universal Intellect and Soul.
    5. Ghazali for all his intelligence still passed a takfir over Ismailis and followers of Ibn Sina. He sentenced all of them to death for apostasy. This part of Ghazali’s legacy has been damaging and was used to justify and enact massacres and genocides of Nizari Ismailis as documented in Sunni chronicles.

He mentions all the cities but he doesn’t say all located in Iran. He mentions baghdad and other places irrelevant to Imam Ghazali .neyshabur and nazamol molk all owed to Persian scholars.without Iranian scholars we wouldn’t be where we are today, however, all these scholars cant say they are Iranian or Persians. 😅

There needs to be a balance in how we approach scholars - One camp is completely obsessed with Ibn Taymiyah and the other camp is obsessed with Al Ghazali - both had their positives and negatives. But they were definitely not perfect.

In a nutshell, Ibn Taymiyyah insisted that all basic tenets and beliefs can be found in total in Quran and hadeeth. He spent all his time in refuting and proving that any other approach is a dead end. He did not mean that debates were useless as Ghazali finally concluded. Yet his writings were essentially to codify the meaning of faith..aqidah.
Mainly the Salaf follow him as the majority of ulema up until now refute him..they fear rulers and imprisonment.
No surprise here as both he and his student Ibn Al Qayyim spent many years imprisoned for speaking against those followers of Ashari, Mutazilte, and various deviations through the years Murgi, Qadariyya, Jahami etc. who were not content to limit themselves to the words of Allah and Prophet Muhammad. This describes most rulers then and now.

No one is obsessed with Al Gazali RA. He’s just one of the many great scholars. Ones who obsess are people who constantly cite bin taymyah , which doesn’t seem fair for other scholars of Islam.
