- Welcome to the Littlebean and Me Podcast Channel!
In today's installment, I thought I would redo/expand on my previous knitting video about continental knitting and Norwegian purling geared specifically toward crocheters learning to knit. This is a talk-through style video where I show you the individual stitches slowly, and talk about common things crocheters may struggle with when it comes to learning to knit (from my own personal experiences).
The great thing is that there are so many ways to knit/purl - that you just need to find the style of knitting that feels "right" to you. Will this technique work for you? Perhaps. If not, keep exploring and keep trying. You can do it!
I hope you enjoy! :) As always, information is below, and don't forget to subscribe to get notifications when i upload my next video! :) Hugs! and Happy Stitching!

Thank you, this was an extremely helpful tutorial. I've tried continental knitting and have been getting the hang of it, but have never seen Norwegian purling. This seems to fit me much better. Thanks so much. Meg 😊
I am a crocheter, learning to knit, this video has come at exactly the right time for me. I believe I knit English style. 😊
Oh my goodness!!! Finally! I can't thank you enough. As a crocheter continental knit was fluid and smooth for me, but I couldn't get purling to work at all until I found your video! Thank you SO much!!
In the part of Norway where I come from, when doing purls on the back, we bring the yarn on top of the left needle rather than scooping the yarn from behind the left needle. I find this method even more effortless and it is the way my grandmother and mother taught me many years ago.
My mother used to knit continental with Norwegian purling...fast as a machine, her! Love it.
Thank you! Absolute game changer. Have crocheted for 10 years but any attempt at knitting has always been abandoned in frustration. The Norwegian Pearl is a huge help!

I was about to give up on continental purling and then I found this video and I made it
Wow! This helps me so much!! I liked all the details you explained especially in comparison with crocheting, which I learned first. Now I don’t feel weird for keeping my yarn in my left hand! And purling Norwegian style will go much smoother & my hand won’t cramp! Thank you so much!! I also want to add that I loved how natural you are - no fancy fingernail polish! The true you! Amen!
Glad it was helpful!
This was an eye opener for me as I crochet. I just might be able to knit!
I have been trying to teach myself to knit. When I first learned to crochet years ago, I was taught wrong and it took me a long time to learn the right way. Now I can do straight line chain pieces no problem. I spent 5 days trying to teach myself the English method and it just was so awkward to let go of the needle and try to use my right hand to feed the yarn. I have watched many videos and yours slowed down really gave me a clue. I managed to do 4 stitches before my other 2 fell off. I got the long tail cast on real good for having to do it so much. I am making progress on the knit stitch. I need to do it a lot more before even begin to tackle the purl stitch. I'll work on it again for a couple of hours tomorrow and see if it becomes more fluid. Thanks.
thanks for the clear close-ups, very helpful.
Thank You Very Much! Tremendous demonstration & comparison for knit & purl from a crocheters point of view. 👏🤗😉 Look forward to practicing 🧶 Therese Pisarcik
Thank you for your clear way of teaching the purl way. I do understand it now !
👏👏
I feel you have explained very well how to do the Continental method. Also, I felt the same way about knitting at first as a crocheter. This is a very good way for anyone .
Thank you very much. This was one of the most helpful videos for me. I always loved the beauty of cable stitching so thought I'd give a go at knitting after crocheting for the last 30 some odd years. Thank you for helping me along my journey. God bless.
Im so glad i found this video that i actually dowloaded it to my tablet so i can watch it anywhere! Im still struggling with my tension a wee bit, im holding it like i do to crochet & its a bit too loose & i need to keep bringing my left index finger closer to the tips of if the needles. Purl was an absolute no way for me i really really struggled & gave up in the end UNTIL NOW! I cant thank you enough, now i just need to think about what the first thing i knit is going to be, maybe a dishcloth? 🙂👍❤️
Thank you so much! I've been wanting to learn how to do the Continental, and have failed miserably. Honestly. However, this lesson gives me hope. You explain so sensibly and simply. Even the tension, that gives ME tension, is so easy to do, with your method. The purl is deliciously complicated, and yet I picked it up. Very clumsy, right now. but I'll get there! Thank you SO much!!
Glad you found it helpful! Sometimes it just takes a certain technique or a certain video to make it click! So many different ways to knit and I’m happy this resonated with you :) hope you’re well
@@LittlebeanandMe I am! As I hope are you. I'm almost half way through a baby blanket for my wee grandson, made with a brioche pattern, and this way of knitting is making it so much easier!! Bless you 🥰
Deliciously complicated! Love that! :)
Yay! Thank heavens for crocheters who knit and purl!! Thank you for making this make sense!
Ooh ooh. Just realizing that my tension between my knit row and purl row are so much more consistent! Thank you again!
this is so very helpful! explaining in crochet terms made everything easy to understand. i’ve always avoided knitting because of purling, but norwegian purl looks so much easier
Thank you sooo much! I've been crocheting for 30 yrs and have always struggled with learning to knit. Great video!
Wow I crochet and couldn’t get the purl stitches thank you!!!!
Finally I find someone who stitches on their index finger! I was convinced that stitching on my index finger was causing tension/holes... but maybe it is okay after all :) Thanks!
You are so welcome!
Great instructions.
Norwegian purl is too many movements for me right now (two weeks in learning how to knit!)... However, because I crochet my hands' mental memory learned the Continental knitting pretty easily and it feels natural for me. Thanks for this video.
Finally I understand! You are awesome!!! Thank you so very much!!!
Thank you for sharing this video! I think your Continental method is very straight forward and efficient. ❤️it
Thank you!
Superb techniques, thank you for teaching/sharing! :)
Glad it was helpful!
This helped me finally learn how to purl efficiently - thank you!
You’re welcome!
Nicely explained. TY!
Thank you for this lesson
So helpful!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!
I just love you...Im a crocheter...and when I’ll try to knit..the purl stich was the hard part for me..but with this video l was happy more than happy...now I can purl like a professional hahahahaah...a kis from cuba😘🇨🇺
Wonderful!
Thanks for the tutorial. Is it possible to have time stamps in the description for referencing later on?
I love your video. What kind of needles are you using and/or what do you recommend for continental knitting?
I'm a crocheter learning to knit. My first set of interchangeables are in the mail. I've tried it and did continental years ago. I didn't know that the yarn can sit with the leading leg in either the front or the back and trying to wrap my head around the combination knitting technique.
Question, when a pattern is written in a certain style, to what extent does it effect the finished product if you change the style of the way you create the stitches?
yes, depending on how you pick up the stitch it may create a twist in the stitch - so when the final piece is stretched, the stitch will stretch open or will be twisted and more closed
What are the needles your using where can I get them
@7:44 Norwegian PURL
Wow that purl has to he had on wrists I feel. I use German purling method I believe
For me, it's OK. I don't use as much motion as I show here - it's exaggerated a bit for the purpose of showing the movement. When i'm moving along (without the camera in front of my arms/awkward positioning), i have very little movement more than knitting. The yarn gets worked much closer to the ends of the needles (for me), and ends up being no more wrist movement than i'm used to with crocheting :) Thanks so much for watching - i'll have to look up that purl method you mentioned!
@@LittlebeanandMe I have a hard time with my hands I can tell that would be rough on mine I have some medical issues that I am a bit extra sensitive to it. But I pull yarn front then you use thumb to pull yarn down...so hard to explain. Lol I will send you a Dm video on ig
Aimee Powers thanks! I’ll be on the lookout 👀
Nope not german lol don't remember what is called but I pull yarn down with thumb
You do a great job of explaining knitting in crochet-familiar terms. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
