The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. And right after this was Dire Straits and then Queen. What a time to be alive in 85’.
Do not forget that other famous and stunning bands performed on that wonderful concert day, too! Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Sting, Phil Collins, Led Zeppelin and etc....
Greetings frm Brazil.

I’d call it majestic venue. unforgettable.
I was born in 86, this is my kinda scene and I only wish my life began earlier
And Queen made ppl forget about every other act that day 😊🤟🏾
I'm Brazilian, my father watched Live Aid in 1985 through television at a store in the mall of his hometown, the only with signal to the broadcast. He said about 40 people piled up close to each other to get a glimpse of the event and it was U2 opening for Dire Straits and then Queen, and that everyone wanted to sing and dance but there wasn't enough space inside for that so they all just smiled and sung most of the songs together. I hate not being alive at the time. Such a better, slower-paced life with the absolute best musicians to ever exist. I envy everyone who witnessed the 80s
Que testemunho lindo
Eu só tinha 1 ano. 😊
I’m Canadian, and like your father watched a lot of the concert through a store window in a mall. It was almost standing room only in front of the TV. I’m a musician and my three band mates and myself were almost late for a gig at a local club. We eventually tore our selves away watching Freddy blow the crowd away. Probably one of the best concerts of all time
Not a single cell phone in sight.... what a time to be alive
lol😂
Cell phones did NOT exist in the 80s
Everybody forgets that U2 played SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY in the most important ENGLISH STADIUM. They have all my respect because it's very tough for an Irish sing this song in the centre of England
I'm English and please believe me most English people know Sunday bloody Sunday was Barbaric. Innocent civilians were killed by British soldiers. It should never have happened and may it never happen again. The lyrics in this song is very clear, it's not able taking sides but calling for peace, "I won't heed the battle call, it's puts my back against the wall".
It isn't tough to sing your hits..:)
Well, it's not a separatist song. It's just about an end to the violence really. It doesn't take sides.
It’s ok,us Scots Guards were doing the Security..true..
@@paulritchie5868 Scots Guards, 💂♂️ 💂♂️ 💂♂️ 💂♂️
You got my respect.
Watched this live as a 14yr old Aussie kid on TV ......My favourite band then and now...What a time to be a kid...
I was at this concert and after U2 finished their set I turned to a guy sitting next to me and said, "that's a pretty good band. Do you know who they are?" He looked at me like I was crazy and said, "That's U2, man!" The next day U2 was one of the biggest bands in the world.
Omg you are in the show? HOLY SHIT
I remember my high school buddy was over at my home. He decided to listen to what was on my generic "walkman". "Church music? You listen to church music? Seriously?" It was the beggining of "Where the Streets Have no Name". I answered, "That's U2!" Him: "What's U2?" Three months later we were at the biggest rock concert either had ever been to - U2 touring the Joshua Tree.
James Journalist they were already well known
@@chocomanger6873 That is amazing. Thank you for sharing your story.
Amazing! I wish I could see them live. Thank you for sharing this awesome story.
I was there... at Wembley Stadium that day... the concert exploded with U2's incredible set and we figured - hands down - that was gonna be best set of the day by a mile... then QUEEN happened... one of THE best days EVER!!! ♥
Singing Sunday Bloody Sunday in London and getting cheered in 1985...pretty nuts.
Not really, as Bono famously said, it's NOT a rebel song.
Still wonder if they didn't have bullet proof vests on under everything. IRA kills a family member of mine in a London bombing? All bets are off.
@@mcress449 aye alright u
@@user-ef8eo9cp3o True story, that was a scary time in London. It is what it is. Just context.
@@andrew6978 Ya, but he was stupid enough to put Bloody Sunday in the title and then tried to explain that it wasn,'t a rebel song. total eejitry out of a young bould Bono 😀
Woah, Bono without glasses and Edge with hair and no hat!! Wild!
Bono before glaucoma and Edge before going bald (but he does have a receding hairline here).
The better versions.
Pre Zoo TV U2.
Is this the last time Edge was onstage without a hat?
Lmao
The day U2 became international rockstars.
Nope... That would be the Live at Red Rocks Concert.
in New Zealand Live Aid put U2 on the map. And Greg Carroll was their roadie from Whanganui....
One Tree Hill
Yep
@@Duke_Togo_G13 Duke Togo There were only a few hundred people at Red Rocks. U2 were still a relative unknown when Live Aid happened.
Live Aid was massive for two bands in particular..U2 and Queen. For U2 it marked the first true worldwide exposure that would propel them up to the absolute top. For Queen, it marked a comeback from a slightly stalled career, to being universally acclaimed as the best live act in the world. U2 actually thought the performance had been a disaster, as Bono, in an attempt to get closer to the crowd, jumped off the stage and stayed down at crowd level for six minutes during the second song ‘Bad’, which meant they didn’t have time to perform ‘Pride’ which was their current single. That’s why he stomps off at the end of the song..he’s so upset that he’s wrecked’ the bands big moment! Of course, to us it just looked like pure drama and showmanship and went down as one of the days most iconic images…which in turn, just blew up their live reputation even more.
I have to say while we were watching this unfold I'd have preferred they had done bad as they did.
When he jumped down and actually interacted with the girls from the crowd Wembley absolute blew up. Not many other artists on that level done as Bono did.
I've said before many many people think their Under A Blood Red Sky performance was their best live.
For many of us who love U2 this was their best ever, especially with Bad.
Absolute legend of a performance
And for Phil Collins to play with Led Zeppelin was a total blast. Especially ruining their set !
Bono saved the life of a young lady who was being crushed in the crowd. The one he dances with before returning to the stage.
Bono didn't jump down to just get closer, he jumped down to assist a woman who was being crushed in the front row. He got her over the rail and danced with her for a brief moment before returning to the stage.
Pride (in the name of love) wasn't their current single at the time... it was The unforgettable fire which went top 5 about that time
This song could have been written last year, it sounds so far ahead of the 80s and yet it was a song that helped define an era. U2 have always been far ahead of their time
dude i heard this song as a kid when it was the coldplay era. legit thought it was coldplay for like 10 years until i looked up when it was released. cant believe this shit came out in 83.
I disagree in total. This song is a child of the 80s and that's the way it sounds.
@@travis9937you just explained me with with or without you, legit thought it was a Coldplay song from the 2000s😂
this kind of raw emotion and sincerity is rare in modern bands, man, that guitar riff is insane
but hey, that Imagine Dragons sure sells a lot of Jeeps...
It's rare in U2 too.

@@josephpisacano4470 Or u could listen to led zeppelin instead of a copy and imitation?
Listen to the lyrics "I won't heed the battle call, it puts my back up against the wall". This is not a war song or a rebel song. It does quite rightly condemn what happened on Sunday Bloody Sunday. Innocent civilians were shot dead by British soldiers. It was barbaric and should not have happened and may it never happen again. This song is not about taking sides but calling for peace.

@@Karma-qt4ji I still would've thought back in 1985 that at this day and age they'd be more like UFO-type variety...
I remember being 13 that summer, watching this thing all day long on TV. I was so excited when the day progressed to U2 and they played this.
I was also 13 and it was a roaster of a day in Scottyland ☀️
That performance gives me goosebumps! Such a talent!
Me too. Powerful stuff. Incredible band. Not even in their prime yet here. Goosebumps is right.
As a 90s child, I really envy those that saw U2 live in the early 80s.
In 2017, while not as good, they were still good
Uve no idea.& b4 moble/cell phones all but destroyed live shows.yes there were more than a few shows were it goes extremely uncomfortable up front but thankfully nothing more.take a look at u2 croke park 1985 ul get my point
I saw them at a free concert in a Dublin park around '83, and my then boyfriend's band supported them at another concert, it was all very local, but there was an excitement about them, i think people could feel they were special and were going to be really big. There were hundreds of bands in Dublin then but they stood out.
This is my battle song. The one I turn to when there's a fight on my hands. It helped me recover from Anorexia. I used to run and not eat...well, I stood to lose something precious to me unless I recovered...I was going to lose my place at drama school unless I put on weight. I stopped not eating but carried on running and this song was what I'd listen to on my walkman. It genuinely inspired me to fight the illness and eat after I got home from each run. I put on muscle after that...and kept my place.
SlyDoll7 I hope you have remained strong SlyDoll7. Your demons are never gone, just live above them. Don’t let an intangible aggression take you down. I don’t know you but I know the people that love you would hate to see you hurt, break and be gone. Much love

Any time is a good time to start a voyage of discovery when it comes to the music of U2. Such a brilliant band with so many good songs. Their 90's music is my favourite as it is more experimental however some of their 80's music is legendary.
@@ThePogue95 Completely agree; ZOO TV Sydney stands comparison with any other artist; insane.

@@cbennett196631 They're awesome.
They had a confidence, determination, clearly going to the top. Different from anybody else that day. From directing the stage cameras to leaving the stage. Queen (a superb performance) were more - look what we have done - and U2 were - look what we're going to do. One of the rare days the musical time continuum met head on.
TT1221 this is spot on man. I’ve watch both performances like 100 times now
Queen represented a great past and U2 the future
Great take!
What makes them different from other bands is they stayed true to their roots. They still have the same members and they still work with the same team and they still act like normal people (albeit very wealthy and famous normal people)
Yeah, they were a band of the future and they were confident in their sound, even amidst monster bands such as Queen. That require some balls and self-steem
Not huge on U2, but easily one of the greatest performances ever

I remember this day vividly. Watched the concert on an 8 foot C-Band dish on my parents house. The feed went out for US during WHO, but I didn't lose the feed. Queen was the best performance that day- and of all time. U2 great- they came of age at this show. BUT- Queen was the show.
THIS is the moment Live Aid came alive. This performance is just blistering passion. A rawness and power which was unmatched on that incredible day.
Queen did better
@@goldbrickstudios6903 hell yes. No doubt about it
@@goldbrickstudios6903 No, only old persons, over 30 were bowled over by Queen, young ones were done after U2 performed, they thought that it was the highlight.
Si porque Phillo Collins fue de siesta total….U2 y Queen son los que se recuerdan
Queen came to party; U2 came to leave a message and remind us what this concert was all about. You can wax all you want to about Freddie but the power and raw edge of U2 outshone everyone that day. Music with balls.
U2 = sellout
I agree . No one "ompares to them. A bright beacon
They’re both amazing
It wasn't a contest, bro. They're all great bands. Appreciate all of them.
It's a shame today's bands don't have any. The 70's and 80's music was full of protest messages, especially about appartied in SA.
That intro riff always gives me chills
This will give you chills
Both the drum and guitar parts of the intro.
Absolutely one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

A massive pre cursor to what is the modern CCM guitar sound. The edge was a huge influence with his use of effects and delay.
Queennnnnnnnnn
@@perry_offical Yes Queen , Freddie
Highly debatable
Someone has most likely already mentioned it but the professionalism at all levels here is incredible, from both the band and the stage crew. I mean, man, look at that maneuver between 4:00 and 4:10 when Bono walks back up to the stage. There's one guy on the landing just below gathering his mic cable and tossing it back up onto the stage while a second stagehand collects the remaining slack and pulls it up and over not only a mic stand but also up and over another band member! It's a small thing but you can tell that everyone, EVERYONE is firing on all cylinders here. Bravo!
Love U2. Look at that crowd... Live Aid was an amazing accomplishment, great to watch it that day and still so good today.
Still one of the most powerful performances

RIP to all of the victims of the Bloody Sunday massacre, 30th January 1972, who died when British soldiers opened fire on peaceful protesters during a civil rights march in Derry, Northern Ireland. Also, RIP to all of the innocent Irish lives who have died at the hands of the British during the occupation of Ireland.
Tiocfaidh ár lá 🇮🇪
Indeed. And rest in peace to all of the civilians from the other side of the divide who were blown to pieces by IRA or INLA bombs, or shot simply for being a protestant / Unionist / Loyalist. Sunday Bloody Sunday is a song about peace - not division. There was a very clear reason for saying "This is not a rebel song." Atrocities were committed by both sides and by the security forces. As Irish people we don't get to say Bloody Sunday was an appalling atrocity while at the same time saying that the bombing in Omagh was a justifiable act of war. RIP to all of the victims of the troubles.
Tá do lá déanta !
A sorrow unending.
Hell yeah, u2 will always have my respect for singing this in the middle of London
RIP to them but bro this isn’t about how the British were horrible as it goes both ways you shouldn’t be saying shite like “opened fire on the innocent protestors “ that may well have been the case but ik for a fact that’s not what u2 wanted to present the British as evil and the Irish as heroes because u can’t act like the ira were good people going around bombing pubs full of innocent people busses and all sorts

Pretty much every U2 song. Surrender is a good song on the album but it kicks serious ass at Red Rocks!

U2 expressed many voices and heart felt feeling in Ireland. Unfortunately they where seen as outsiders but each one of them was always approachable. But as a boy in Dublin int the 80s I was proud and respectful of them and I love them for all the things they have done around the world. Thank you for being better than me.

To me, one of the best performances of this day, right after Queen. I was already a fan, and had already seen them in concert once. The first of four times. Fantastic.
My dad was in a punk band and he told me him and his mates would often cover this song in the pubs of Eastbourne.
In 1984, they were our college band. We saw them at Massey Hall in Toronto. Capacity was 3000 people. It was a spiritual experience. A few years earlier, I saw them play a bar in London Ontario. (Call The Office) Their manager, Paul McGuiness, knew what a huge moment this was for his "little band." I remember hearing this performance in my car on my radio.
