Very well done! This presenter includes context as well as editing examples. He also knows how to take his time and not just click around without explaining things, as a lot of Photoshop / Lightroom gurus are lousy presenters. He understands that he's talking about photography and editing in the context of what the artist wants to achieve. I will have to recommend to others and see more of his work.
Yours are significantly better than the Mastin and VSCO stuff. More recently I've been using Alex Ruskman's stuff and tend to only use his and your stuff on my digitals 👍
It is important to remember that negative film stock was only a starting point for print making. Yes, drug stores and mass printing services relied on preset formulas for making prints. But skilled color printers had more tools at their disposal to make prints with a pure black and a paper white. Improved color balance and other tweaks - such as burning and dodging - were also available in the darkroom. Negative film was just a starting point. As one who learned photography in the darkroom, I am very happy with the amount of micro controls available with digital photography and post processing software. These tools allow you to get the perfect print out of the initial exposure in way that was nearly impossible in the darkroom. I’m not going back to film. That said, I view these presets and profiles as shortcuts to finding the look you want for the final image. They allow you to quickly explore a range of options without tweaking individual sliders. With both profiles and presets, it’s also theoretically possible to stack different film looks to get hybrid effects quickly. Have fun. Don’t be satisfied with nostalgic mediocre drug store prints.
I think these are some of the best presets you can get - Only other I have tried which I found worth mentioning are Alex Ruskman's which are also as close to the real thing as you can get.
Todd, brilliant explanation and presentation. You explained the 4 vs 5 in a way RNI themselves don’t / can’t. So thank you for helping me learn and make better choices. Thank you.
This video appeared on my recommended feed and within 5 mins I purchased these profiles.... WOW was it worth it! Literally the best purchase I’ve made for photography in such a long time. I can now finally get the organic film look I’ve been craving forever on ANY camera I shoot with! Thanks a bunch for this 🙌🏼
Loved this video I never got bored and learned so much. Please keep these coming! I’m interested in just how to keep your laptop working efficiently and organized with all the photos we take. ❤
I only have two preset for my Lightroom ( old 6.14 ), and both require the raw files to use the appropriate profiles, before using the presets. The results are interesting in a good way. I don't think any preset without the use of appropriate film profile will work.
Just bought the pro V5 absolutely hands down the best emulation I have seen or used! highly recommend for anyone trying to replicate film on digital, with the price of film only going one way, you really can achieve, and almost identical look. I have been doing some comparisons and with tweeks I can hardly tell. Yes, they are quite expensive, but for what you get it is more than worth it! I've been trying to build my own film profile (I generally shoot Kodak porta 400 and Fuji superia and these really are and will continue to improve my work flow. The level of detail is outstanding
I bought this preset pack because of you, I’ve been ruining all my own photos with my terrible eye for editing and colour grading. Thanks for the help I couldn’t be happier
Hey Todd. You’re wrong on a few things about film. 1. Film does produce pure blacks. Most of the “film looks” with lifted blacks are emulating lab scans. If you’ve ever looked at a film negative you would see there are sections that are nearly transparent. After inversion, those transparent areas would become deep blacks. Color negative and slide film both highly lack latitude in the shadow, which often crush the backs as opposed to lifting them. 2. Some film presets are subtractive, yes, but if you shoot a highly saturated film like Velvia or Ektar you would know those film stocks ADD punch. You would definitely need to boost the saturation on those images.
I really appreciate your work Todd. We can really see you putting the time in to the quality of your videos. Thanks man, wishing you and your chanel the best!
@@dominey is there an app that can give your android or iPhone Fujifilm and Kodak Colours, What I mean is Film Simulation Recipes, so you can enter a few colour settings etc and get Fujifilm and Kodak Colours everytime you shoot with your android or iPhone, I don't want an app like lightroom that charges you every month as I am short of money, so just a one off payment is what I want, I just want Fuji Across and Fiji Provia colours etc coming from my Android and iPhone camera.
Thank you very very very much!! I have been looking for this film emulation tutorial for ages. Yours is the only one which exact;y taught me what i wanted to know. Thank you thank you!!
Thank you for explaining the difference between presets and profiles! I have been wondering why all the “presets” I’ve purchased didn’t show me the actual changes they were making to the photo - turns out they are profiles not presets. Also fascinating to learn a bit of background about these different types of film. Awesome video.
Cheers for explaining the difference between presets and profiles. I've been playing around with the VSCO presets and discovered a massive workflow limitation. If I've deliberately underexposed a photo, I'll apply exposure settings to reach my desired look, but then if I want to try the a film lool, the preset applies exposure settings to absolute values, not values relative to my existing setting, so I need to correct the exposure again. This is also an issue if I wish to apply the film presets to photos I've previously edited. The only solution is to export images first, and then apply the presets, which isn't ideal from a quality perspective. From your video, it sounds like a profile might be the best solution, but will a profile work over the top of and maintain existing settings? (i.e applying the settings relative to existing settings). Ideally rather than using profiles, I'd rather have presets that work relative to existing settings as I like an image to be fully adjustable - presumably this could be achieved if the presets were built around a mask of the entire image, but they're not.
it is so amazing that sharing your experience with us. It means a lot because you use yourself this film look from originals, the observations directly coming from your experience. Personally i wouldn't have that info, without someone like you and i can say for my generation. And it gives me so much joy and wonder about film, film emulations, and photographing delicacies.
That crop of highlights and shadows of the profiles are actually a pretty huge disadvantage of the profiles. It is not that the film wouldn't reproduce pure white - it's just more elastic there and more light would be needed for that. And in the black room one can illuminate the photopaper stronger so the light is there. That can't be done with the profile RNI chose. That completely prevents full whites and blecks even if one would like to develop them.
Any pointers for going the other way around? I've digitized a couple thousand of my mother's from the 70s and onwards, might not do all of that wall of magazines in the basement but wanna learn how to try and bring out some of the faded colors and washed out highlights. Digitized with a macro lens and a Godox M150 light, matching the 5600K white balance, but when trying to save blown out skies they turn brown - was the smog that bad in the 70s/80s? And shadows go blue. Maybe that's the charm. Asked ChatGPT and got an answer that kind of sounded right but I think it also wanted to make new pictures look like old
I realize this video is three years old. Really beneficial information though for me. Do you recommend someone's Lightroom Presets as you recommend RNI products? I"d really like to get some good presets but am pretty new use of Lightroom and it seems there are thousands of people selling presets. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Very good video - no need to apologise about taking time to go over the film stocks the emulations employ, that's brilliant!! As a long time ago film shooter, now fully digital, I find the RNI profiles superb. Keep up the great work!
So I got these, I have a fuji camera so it has built in filmstocks, so when I select say the actual camera Matching VELVIA, to compare with the Velvia in these presets and they are NOTHING a like... Like completely different. So how am I to know how accurate these presets are?
My favorite overview of the product Todd, thanks for sharing! I have a question about it, wonder if you experience the same. I installed demo 5. When using profiles from presets list at the left in LR Classic, I obtain a different result than using the profile in the right menu of profiles. I can't find differences in any other setting. Also, when using the left panel, when hovering it gives a preview, but when clicking on it and moving the mouse over the photo, the image changes look. For example with Portra 400 it becomes more saturated and contrasted. Have you experienced this different behavior as well?
Cool stuff and well presented. I had been drawn to Fujis, in part to avail of its film simulations. But i’ve decided to stick with my Canons. So seeing this option is available is great.
Very interesting video. I have the demo since 1 week and honestly it's really good. The Pro lite is enough for me, I wait the Black Friday for maybe a good price.
Todd I have a question. 🙋♀️ for the image you where using since it was perfectly exposed, no need for any further adjustments in the basics tab just apply the preset?
Hey Todd, thanks for the video. Which do you use, presets or profiles? Which is better for editing lots of photos in different lighting situations, like, say, for a wedding photographer? Thanks!
Great video Todd, I’ve only just come across you channel and have just purchased a Fuji gfx 50sii, Prior to that have shot a lot of film. I have now just downloaded the trial version but there is no Fuji profiles with it. Keep up the great work 👍👍👍

Great video! I was wondering which manufacturers RAW files react best to film simulation presets and profiles. Currently I am shooting microfourthird sensors.
I have a question! I dont use Lightroom, simply I dont like it, I prefer camera raw+photoshop...when you get this presets or profiles you can use them also in camera raw?? Thanks a lot! very nice video
RNI seems held back by the fact they don't have a great grain system the way dehancer does (where you can control grain in the highlights, mids and shadows to get a more film like application of grain versus an overlay of grain applied the same in all areas).
From your Portra 400 example, the color looks slightly different between v4 and v5. If I already have RNI All Films 4 Pro, is it worth getting version 5 Pro?
