The manual you were expecting from TE is here. This guy should receive a Field desk as "thank you", or other overpriced element from their catalog... Thank you for taking the time to make this, it's beyond amazing.
This is an outstanding resource to get a good understanding of the op-xy! I was learning on the device independently at first… had a growing list of questions… this video manual answered them all. Thanks!
Thanks SO MUCH for being thoughtful and taking the time to make this walk-through. I've watched it straight through in its entirety and it helped me make the decision to buy one! Mine arrives today and will open it up and start watching your video again, as I explore. Incredibly helpful, I'm SO EXCITED to start getting creative. And, as I own a Syntakt and Minifreak, I know what this device can and cannot do, and I am comfortable with it. Stoked, thanks again!
@Synthcoma You're very welcome, I'm so glad that you've found it useful. I hope you have fun when it arrives! Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll help if I can!
I’ve just got mine and LOVE IT. Omg, it’s so much fun. Posting a vid soon, will tag you! Quick questions…Cab you param lock the EQ to certain tracks? So say I want all of TRACK ONE to be all highs, but no mids or lows... I can’t find a way to do that, not sure I can. Do you know if it’s possible? Second, I’m trying to param lock the button sound effects to a certain note on my sequencer. I go to that area and use the number 6 button, the staccato. I hold it down and then hold down a few keys in the sequencer to latch the staccato onto, but when I let go of the buttons, the staccato function doesn’t play on those notes. I see that the staccato button is lit up when it’s in that section of the sequence, but I’m not getting the effect to latch onto the notes. Any advice on how to “make it stick”? Thanks in advance!!
@Synthcoma Fantastic, glad you're enjoying it! No, you can't parameter lock the EQ or compressor as far as I'm aware, nothing that isn't linked to a specific track. Regarding your second question, not totally sure I understand. You should just be able to sequence in the Punch in FX in aux channel 2, so go to that channel, press a button and then press the steps on the sequencer you want to apply it. Even with the pre track Shift punch in effects, you can record them too, if you're holding record. They go to the aux punch in FX too.
Thanks so much for making this - it's brilliant and it literally saved my XY! I was getting so frustrated with the TE manual that I was considering selling it.
I'm so glad to hear that the video has made a difference for you. Please don't hesitate to ask questions if anything comes up, I'll answer them if I can!
Ok sweet! Mine is in the mail and now I have this well made video to reference. I will just open it and go crazy, but I love that this tutorial is here! Thank you. I was looking for one from Cuckoo and still will, but this is great! Liked and subscribed
agreed! I'm almost embarrassed to say I've probably watched almost 30 hours of videos about this things since it came out and still learned so many new details with this video. Great work!
@@mochreachI don’t suppose you’d consider doing one for the OP One Field … this is THE best video manual I’ve seen per se … many thanks Chris … great job!
Many thanks, I really appreciate you saying that, it was a lot of work to put together, glad people are finding it useful. I'd be more than happy to do one for the OP-1 Field, but I don't own one I'm afraid!
RTFM in a flesh! 😂 TNX! Before I LTFM thru, quick question: is there a way to copy pattern midi w/o engine sound or sound w/o replacing notes? Can’t figure out how to propagate changed sound to all track patterns (save/apply preset?). I wish can set particular track to share just one engine/sound all the time. Also, is there a way to mute all track scenes in the song? I want to record to the daw track by track. Can’t find any easy way. Will try tomorrow copy project, remove all by one track maybe. Any tip on transferring to DAW? Cheers!
🤣 Copying a pattern on the Arranger mode will copy the engine too, so if you just want MIDI, you need to load the preset again afterwards. If you just want to copy the preset, hold the track button and then press M2. If you want MIDI without the engine, you could link the tracks, to do that, hold the main track you want to copy the midi for and then press the tracks you want to link. You won't copy the midi to the pattern, but the notes will play on the other tracks too. Regarding muting multiple tracks, no I don't think so, but I usually just use 4 fingers and mute 4 then 4, or you could set up a scene for it. Finally, I think there's multi channel out recording over USB, although I haven't tried it yet.
As a prospective OP-XY investor this is really useful. Thank you for putting this together -) One question. Regarding the 'random' effects; if you use a random function and get a result you like and want to keep, is there anyway of pausing it and saving a specific random creation? Another way of putting the same question could be is: can you save a result produced by randomisation, or is the random effect only really of use for playing live and lost once the loop resets and a new random pattern is created?
@Cactuspractice12 You're welcome, glad you're finding it useful! Regarding the random effects, no, there's no way to bake in the randomness, it'll be random every time. The only way you could do it is monitor the MIDI and keep a record of that, but that's not exactly ergonomic.
2:53:14 I don’t think you can Copy & Paste a Pattern with a Step Component, and remove the component for the newly copied Pattern without removing that component in the original Pattern too. It’s linked. You remove from one, it will remove from all.
I'm curious about the instrument presets. When you preview them, a lot of them seem to have reverb on them. Does the preset store the send levels, and if so, if you change your FX to something completely different like a distortion, does that affect the preview?
Yes, that's right, the preset saves the send levels, but the FX are set independently, so there could be different FX loaded compared to when the preset was created, which also affects the preview. This is the same behaviour as the OP-Z. I had a thought that, if the FX were critical to the sound,, perhaps you could have a naming convention for the preset with a couple of letters at the end that make a note of the presets e.g. "megaecho_dere", where you have the arbitrary name followed by "dere" for delay/reverb.
You're a saint for this. Questions I have: are triplet rhythms somehow possible? I get doing a step component for a ratchet triplet kind of technique, but is there really no way to fullly create triplet patterns? Maybe switching time signature and then using step length's of 12... Also - big one - SIDECHAIN?? Hard to believe they'd make a dance music dream machine without including an easy way to get sidechaining happening. I guess dropping the volume on specific steps with step components again but thats not ideal... any hacks for this?
There are a couple of ways, one is changing the time signature and step length, like you said, but you can also manually adjust the microtiming too. To do this, it works the same as on the OP-Z, this video from @Jebrald0 gives a good explanation: ua-cam.com/video/dlYPJ5SOfjk/v-deo.html. Also there are a couple of ways to get a sidechain effect, although it's a bit awkward, this post has a good discussion about it: op-forums.com/t/how-to-side-chain/28393/5
Quick question! Something seems to have happened to the step sequencer for me. I can't record multiple notes on a step. I hold down a button in the step sequencer, and then I play 4 notes to go with that step, but only one note lights up. Just to check, I started a new song and this problem doesn't happen on the new song, so there must be something I did to have it only record one note at a time. Is there a some kind of "record mode" in a menu that I mistakingly tweaked for this song? If so, I can't seem to find it. Any thoughts on what this could be? :) THANK YOU!
Is the engine set to mono or legato? Press instrument, select the track and then go to the M2 menu, hold shift and then it's encoder 1 or 2 I think. Change it to poly and see if it works now.
@@mochreach Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I looked there, it was already set to poly. So strange. Maybe a new bug that I'm the first to discover, haha. So weird! Even on the same song, I tried other tracks and the adding multiple notes to one step worked just fine! HAS to be something with that particular track, I just can't figure out what it is! If I find out what it is, I'll let ya know, cheers!
So, someone of Reddit mentioned that I may have reached the note limit. I didn’t even know there was such a thing on the OP XY. But, I took a few notes off from different places on the sequence, and lo and behold, I was able to add more notes to the step I wanted to original add to! Just happy I resolved the issue, was really bugging. I wonder what the amount of notes one can use before reaching a limit? And, I wonder if that capacity is shown somewhere? Anyway, just thought I’d share the solve ✌🏽
@@Synthcoma Ah right, yes, there's a 120 note limit to a sequence, it does tell you in the manual although it's a bit buried, I also added it to this diagram: ua-cam.com/video/SC7oJ6AqJdI/v-deo.html
Having a really hard time deciding if i want to sell my OP-1f to buy the XY. I mostly like making lofi and house beats on the couch as a way to decompress. Any advice?
@amarthurfurniture860 I think it comes down to whether you prefer the tape or the sequencer-based workflow. The tape on the OP-1f is quite unique and probably requires better execution to get good results, while you're more likely to get happy accidents with the OP-XY. The workflow on the XY is basically the same as the OP-Z, so if you can get your hands on one of those to give it a try, you could see if you like it before selling your OP-1f.
Thank u for this, but make sure when u show us things, you let the demonstration show, ur kinda moving on or talking over where we can't fully see how a certain thing works, cause u move to fast to the next thing...if that makes sense. But great job!
The brain detects the key for the whole project, so it uses all the tracks to determine it (unless you set it manually), which makes sense as generally all the tracks will be playing in the same key. Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!
How many save slots do you have per engine? Meaning. How many user created presets can be saved per sound engine Say for example the random feature can be hit and make one preset into very many different presets not unlike nords
The presets are very small human readable text files (JSON), and I think the only limit is the size of the internal storage, so maybe 1000s or 10,000s. Unless it's a sample-based preset, then the samples are stored with it and take up more space, although the samples created by the device itself are very compact.
I think Transpose Only is bugged. I can’t get it to do anything. The OP-Z also has Transpose Only but the XY doesn’t seem to behave the same way as it does on the Z. I contacted TE and they said: “transpose only" overrides the scale-aware logic of brain for that step and instead does a simple transpose. similar to "ignore chord progression" this only applies when the track is being affected by brain! That’s how it works on the Z but not the XY. 😢
