  • I have access to a surface open pit type of mine where glacial river deposited sand is the mineral being mined. Of course as with all glacier deposits there's "junk" or overburden layered on top of the good stuff which must be removed before you get at the good stuff. In this case that is high quality sand. This overburden consists of primarily two layers, black dirt and clay. Of course, both of these materials are used in various aspects of construction work and therefore are not wasted. I found that if I gathered the materials I wanted from the rain runoff drainage area below the clay stock pile in the mine I was able to get just the very fine clay material free from river rocks and sand. I was successful in my task. Two separate containers have been prepared and properly seeded from my existing springtail supply and feed with yeast. Now the waiting begins! I will check and feed every few days to monitor the process and report back with my findings.
