Winter Cohos, Fishing frenzy! Did we find a new fishery? Insight on shrimp/prawn species & Crabbing.

On this early winter episode, we visit BC's Westcoast Vancouver. We fished deep for Winter Chinooks but found Winter Cohos instead! A first this occurrence in my boat. As per usual in the summer, Coho bites came fast and fierce. Minimum size retention for Coho Salmon is 30cm without adipose fin (hatchery), see regulation links below.
Fishing methods
Trolled for Salmon, by way of downriggers with 12-to-15-pound weights. We didn't have luck until we fished the top water column, as per marks on the fish finder and found a plethora of Coho Salmon.
The strike zone was 70 to 80 feet below surface. Our downriggers at 100 ft to compensate for blowback and trolled at 2.5-3mph.
We had good luck using Gibbs Oki 360 flashers paired with Luhr Jensen Ghost Flash fly's. Not a lights out day but a great Winter Day fishing regardless.
Prawning methods
We dropped 2 sets of traps (2 in each set, 4 traps total) and yielded over around 100 (125 per license, limit retention). I find it helpful to use a 2-buoy system (visible from a distance and easy to pick out of the water upon retrieval). The bait combo proven to be effective is a mix of Uncle Freds prawning/crabbing pellets, cat food pellets, wet cat food in a can and Procure crab/prawning oil. Crabbing methods
We set our traps in 40ft of water and had chicken as bait. Crabs are hungry eaters and if there's not enough bait for the soak time, they will head for the exit doors. This may be the reason to our low yield on this trip.

Absolutely! This was late November last year. It was 💯 percent open at that time.
Love my Pro Hauler! I need to get that cool coiler attachment. Thought about those spools, too, but I’m not so sure I want more things to clutter the boat. We get to keep only 80 spots per person over in the San Juans. And seasons aren’t posted yet for the May opener. Those shakers look fun! Another great video!

yes blue backs which are young coho and 50 years ago we would have a blast fishing for them in bowzer bay in march north of nanimo

what time of the year. are those blue backs
I relooked at some photos, and it appears they have a tinge of blue on the back. One thing for sure, they're cohos. Nice if we had a tug or two from a Chinook. Get em next time.
