  • Chinese researchers discovered what they say is the deepest blue hole in the world, off the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. The sinkhole was measured at 1,000 feet, deeper than divers could reach. Photo: Associated Press

Can't you just save me the time and add to the title: "...and didn't find shit."

There is no oxygen in H20 deeper than 330 ft? So what does it become, H2?

so was it not therein the recent past or has it always been there and just now discovered?

Maybe because the area is under dispute. Vietnam, China, and other countries claim it, so maybe they just didnt explore the area until now.

Lol let me answer your question 6 years later, but both actually, probably been there for quite some time but not like forever. Probably when underwater caves collapsed. That's why they are so interesting because you can get a snapshot of the water and world from back then.

western media really needs to learn the difference between Paracel and Spratly, Paracel under the total control of China, it has naturally formed islands, and has been so since the 1950s, so there is no dispute in the Paracel island which lies very close to Hainan province of China. the part that is disputed is the Spratly, which lies further south.

Scientific illiteracy is common in today's media... but I thought at least the WSJ might have a decent science editor :/ I was hoping the scientific ignorance was limited to the Opinion section :(
"There's no oxygen in waters deeper than 330 feet" - seriously? At its shallowest, the Oxygen Minimum Zone starts at 200m (650 feet), and may only start as low as 1000m (3300ft)
Perhaps that's where the mistake arose from? Confusing 3300 with 330?

Yes ... and anyway, the presence or absence of oxygen in the water has nothing to do with the fact that no diver can dive that deep. (although I am actually unsure of the maximal depth that can be reached by divers nowadays and it very much depends on the type of equipment they can have access to).

Some fish & wildlife must have lived & swum in waters deeper than 330 ft, are you sure that Oxygen is absent there? What are the evidences from scientific research?

Such a weird statement as most water resistant watches are only good up to 330 ft. And how can it still be water w/o an oxygen molecule? I think they need to rethink this. WSJ? weird.

This deep hole is was probably formed by volcanic gasses. Nothing to see anyway.
