i heard this as a child on tv and im 32 now and just now seeing this played live and from the original artist. mind blown. thank you for uploading and providing your story and playing
Couldn't imagine the show without Pat Caird's music. The music and sound design as a whole was crucial to the show's identity and even a lot of the humor.
The music in Ed Edd n Eddy, specifically 88 Fingers Edward, may very well be my first venture into music. I would have been under 10 at the time, and I hadn't played an instrument, but the sound of the lap steel guitar just captivated me and I asked my mom for a guitar. I didn't pick it up right away, and actually got into piano/keys before coming back to guitar many years later. This little lick still stayed in my mind from then until now, and I can proudly say I can play it on guitar! (Albeit, 75% speed!)
i had this same experience! though i never did learn the song because i didn't want to learn it on the wrong instrument... but this video has made me think about getting a lap steel guitar to play around with
I've been waking up to that ''crazy steel playing that makes no sense'' for something like 10 years now. Best alarm sound ever 10/10. Thank you for this.
As a fan of Ed, Edd, 'N Eddy, it's so cool to hear from Pat Caird about making the show. There's so many iconic musical stings in the show and it's so interesting to hear how it came about.
Oh man this is awesome. Seeing this episode of him playing steel when I was 9 is what got me started on playing steel which I still play. I didn’t know what that sound was at the time but I loved it haha. Thank you man!
WOOOOOOOHOOOOOO I have been waiting for this video! I knew you'd come around to it:))) thanks man. This is a little trip down memory lane, im showing this to all my friends
Man, the sound of that steel guitar it's been printed in my brain ever since the first watched that episode. Definitely my favorite scene from the show, love it.
IT'S YOU, HOLY!!! Your music reached the four corners of the world and will live forever as a symbol of unexpected talent, thank you for also giving so many of us a subtle, instinctive but yet so healthy introduction to what (we didn't know back then, but would eventually find out) is good music!
Dude I could have remembered what this piece sounds like at any point in my life for the last 20 years. Like if someone brought it up I wouldve heard it in my head immediately. You are awesome 👍
I always thought this moment in Ed Edd and Eddy was so cool, I was 9 when I first saw the episode now. It was probably one of the coolest things I ever heard, I loved how the other characters just froze and watched in bewilderment/amazement. It’s much how steel playing in the wild goes for me today. I don’t think I’ve seen an animated character play the steel guitar since… Thanks for your musical contribution to the episode, and all our lives, especially mine!
Just started re-watching the show which I hadn't done in a long time since I was a child and my god did I enjoy hearing those soothing sounds of 88 fingers. Cartoon Network was part of my childhood and thank you for contributing to that!
Okay I came looking for the EE&E clip just to sample it but I was not expecting the dude who played it to have a whole breakdown. Thank you for your iconic contribution to nostalgia and memes, you never know what random low effort creation you'll be remembered for lol
i looked up a video where some one performs this live. but what i didnt expect to find is the original composer doing it. that pretty dang cool dude! :P ive personally met danny back in 2007 and not just a hi bye deal either. i spent several hours at his studio in canada wile they were making the movie. alot of stuff went over my head but now i realize danny was an interesting character. a little shy at first but once he open up he talked my head off and i loved every seconds of it. the whole crew was great to talk and be with! you made one of the most random memorable music moments in ed ed n eddy! love it!
This always stood out to me, especially with my grandfather being a lifelong lap steel player. So cool to hear this story after all these years, thank you!
I was wondering who made it. It brought back memories of being a kid in the 90's. Ed Edd n Eddy was my favorite show and particularly this specific episode bring lots of good memories
I remember grabbing my vcr at like 9 years old, and getting a blank tape specifically to record this segment. I was so captivated by its sound and the picking style - I have genuinely never heard anything like it since.
To stumble on the literal musician behind one of the most ironic musical peices of my childhood. Thank you for what youve given my generation and millions of fans
Your little steel guitar melody is burned into my brain forever. Recently saw a meme with a photo of edd with the lap steel guitar that said "if you were born in the 90s you can hear every single note just from looking at this picture" so i know im not alone. Lol
I recently bought the Cartoon Network 30th anniversary collection of Ed Edd N Eddy and have been binge watching all the seasons the past couple of days. When I got to the episode with 88 Fingers, I was curious to see if anyone had successfully covered the sheer insanity of this track on UA-cam. And this was the first video to pop up in the results 😄 This was such an awesome back story to how that track came to be. And it filled me with so much nostalgia from back when I was around 7 years old and heard it for the first time.
I love this video exists. Born in '97 and watched it in Spanish so I think I was around 5 or 6 when I first heard this on TV. I still remember it, like this huge excitement and awe, laughing about it and wondering what the hell was that. Thanks to you and Pat for that moment. 👍🤌🤯
Man, seeing this at last is amazing! I was actually drawn to your music by the reveal that you were the one who did "88 Fingers Edward"; wound up picking up a copy of Solid States & Loose Ends at the end of all of it.
I remember watching the episode for the first time and getting instantly mesmerized by the sound. I couldn't understand what was going on with the playing (because I was like...8 or something) but I just knew I loved listening to it and every time that episode came on, I couldn't wait for it to get to that part. Every now and again I look it up on UA-cam, because I still love the sound. So a big thanks to you for creating it, it brings back pleasant memories!
Now you have to play it with your feet while reading a book. Amazing though, would’ve assumed it was synthesized. Well played. It’s ingrained into my memory lol
I stumbled upon this video just randomly searching up some clips of the show. Caught my eye, had to watch this. Amazing work. Your music made this scene so iconic and memorable
I wish Danny could actually renew or do a reboot for this show that actually adjust to "modern times". Thank you so much for doing this video! It was so entertaining!
Wow I always wondered who played this when I was a kid. Thanks so much for making this video. It was probably one of the moments in my childhood that steered me towards a life of music. I'm an engineer by day now but I still find time to make music in my free time and spent my entire childhood studying music before college.
I remember a couple other, less memorable occasions on the show where Double D played steel- when the boys offered hula lessons, needed accompaniment for a silent movie, etc.. Was that you too?
The only thing I can't stand is that this arrangement is so short and that I can't find anything else that scratches that itch. Is there anything like this?
You probably don't even know just how many kids remember this... Thank you for being a part of my childhood sir!
You're most welcome!
i heard this as a child on tv and im 32 now and just now seeing this played live and from the original artist. mind blown. thank you for uploading and providing your story and playing
It's actually really cool to find out who play that bit, I've always loved it ever since I first saw the episode
It’s a well-loved scene!
The man behind the curtain has finally revealed himself! Only he’s a musician, not an Illuminati figure
Perhaps I'm both!
Couldn't imagine the show without Pat Caird's music. The music and sound design as a whole was crucial to the show's identity and even a lot of the humor.
Totally agree!
Finally finished watching on my lunch break just now. This felt like meeting a childhood hero. Thanks Steve, you delivered so much on this one
You’re most welcome! It was fun to do.

😌😌, the Men that made my Childhood Fun. Thank you so very much. I'm wondering who was writing ✍️ all Rolfs Quotes
You did a great service to the children of our generation. Never would we have heard such a wonderful melody without your contribution.
Thank you!
I still remember that scene from when I was a kid. Thank you for the memory!
You’re very welcome!
The amount of times I rewound that clip on VHS as a kid…
I have a 6 string lap steel tuned to C6.. I now have a life goal.
As a fan of Ed, Edd, 'N Eddy, it's so cool to hear from Pat Caird about making the show. There's so many iconic musical stings in the show and it's so interesting to hear how it came about.
Yessss, I'm so glad he was in here cuz that description of the style as the surviving members of two tour buses was golden, and accurate lmao
Man, I wish I could get my friend's to watch Ed, Edd n Eddy so they could hear this
I never thought in my life id see & hear the man who actually played that riff, wow. You crushed it man.
Why, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Oh man this is awesome. Seeing this episode of him playing steel when I was 9 is what got me started on playing steel which I still play. I didn’t know what that sound was at the time but I loved it haha. Thank you man!
You are a living legend, sir. Words can't express my gratitude to your musical talent.
Thanks for listening
You created the greatest moments in cartoon history. Thank you.
You're welcome!

Videos like this are the true gems of youtube The full story about a random gag from a 90’s cartoon
Dude, you rock at the pedal steel guitar! That scene made that episode of Ed Edd n Eddy my favorite.
It is very nice to know the man behind the sound, that small 30+ sec gag is iconic and bring smile on my face every time I hear it. Thank you.
Man, the sound of that steel guitar it's been printed in my brain ever since the first watched that episode. Definitely my favorite scene from the show, love it.

I remember loving that part, glad you are here to explain such a funny scene from our childhood show.
It just kept flooding back, hearing that again felt like a 30 second sneeze it was so good
Thank you!! Everyone who eorked on this show did a phenomenal job, glad you did this bit

I was convinced that this was a multi track recording, incredibly impressive. Inspired me to try doing slide on my guitar years later.
The real 88 fingers Edward!!!
This always stood out to me, especially with my grandfather being a lifelong lap steel player. So cool to hear this story after all these years, thank you!

thank you for this video, it means a lot to those who really grew up with this show. 88 fingers Edward solidified him as not being a son of a Shepard.
Glad to do it!

Thank You so much. The show was part of my childhood. Gosh that episode specifically was my favorite
judging by that fret wear i'd say that 88 fingers edward has been played ALOT.
Man, this thing was played a ton before I ever bought it about 25 years ago. I wish I knew more about where it came from.
Its been 20 years and this will forever be imprinted in my brain. You are a god.

Glad you enjoyed it! Funny how a 25 second bunch of noise can be remembered so fondly!
Man, seeing this at last is amazing! I was actually drawn to your music by the reveal that you were the one who did "88 Fingers Edward"; wound up picking up a copy of Solid States & Loose Ends at the end of all of it.
Very Cool. Thanks!
I have one of those same Magnatone lap steels. Already love it cause it was my dad's but knowing it's the 88 Fingers Edward steel is even cooler.
I remember watching the episode for the first time and getting instantly mesmerized by the sound. I couldn't understand what was going on with the playing (because I was like...8 or something) but I just knew I loved listening to it and every time that episode came on, I couldn't wait for it to get to that part. Sir thank you for making such an impactful piece of sound
Not only your music transcend time but frontiers, greetings form 🇲🇽
Thanks for watching it!
This song lives rent free in my head. Thank you for your work sir 🙏
Rolling off the tone knob and bringing it back up is one of those "It's so simple, I feel like an idiot for never thinking of it" deals.
It sure wasn't my invention, but thanks!
well shit, never thought i'd actually see the guy that played a part of my childhood, thanks for sharing!
Dude I’m so glad you made this video, fell in love with the sound ever since I heard it in the episode
Sure lit up my face with a smile lmao
Thanks for watching it!

Ok that’s it, my life is complete
Mine too!
My search was 'Ed Black Steel Guitar',and this came up.😁
Oh my goodness. This is more than i could have hoped for. One of my favorite scenes in the show.
When I think of that show that clip is always the first thing to come to mind. Great seeing the guys behind it. Thanks for sharing the legend lol
Just watched Avast Ye Eds today, you killed that clip.
You have had such a huge impact on so many kids
Thank you 🤩
Fills my heart with joy to find this. Cheers, Steve.
I love that sound and its such a great memory! Thank you for making this video!
Now you have to play it with your feet while reading a book. Amazing though, would’ve assumed it was synthesized. Well played. It’s ingrained into my memory lol

Dude you’re a legend.

I remember a couple other, less memorable occasions on the show where Double D played steel- when the boys offered hula lessons, needed accompaniment for a silent movie, etc.. Was that you too?
I don’t think it was. I think was the only thing I did for that show.
now I want to see who made doc gerbil's world theme song
Thank you so much for sharing! I love Ed Edd and Eddy!
Me too!
omg omg omg! Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!!
This is awesome, would you ever do an extended version?
I can't really imagine it being any longer than it is!
Did you also do the music on the episode- little blue ed when edd was playing in the garage when the homemade movie was playing?
This instrument may be "so annoying", but you do a fine job at playing it!
Literally got me asking what the hells a lapsteel
What's the model of lapsteel you used here, Steve?
It’s a Magnatone, but no idea what model.
@@SteveDawsonYT Awesome! Thank you, this was truly one of the best videos I've come across, I've held this little tune all my life!
That was you??? I always figured that the person's name who did the recording was lost to time.
Indeed it was!
The only thing I can't stand is that this arrangement is so short and that I can't find anything else that scratches that itch.
Is there anything like this?
Not exactly, but if you want to get into the ballpark, listen to some Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West records!
