I love when he says "look what I'm whipping up" he is basically letting the audience know he is creating some crazy stuff behind him and trying to distract us all at the same time. Then he says, "dont catch me slipping up" like we are slipping everytime we let ourselves be distracted. Its genius
All heavy metaphors. Look at how they take care of the gun vs the bodies of the dead. Look at how the dancing in the foreground distracts from the fire and chaos in the background. The man on the white horse is the biblical depiction of death. His pose when he shoots the first guy is similar to a picture of Jim Crow. Lyrics "this my celly, that's a tool. " is literally telling you what to do if you see something. Notice how quickly pacified you were right after he killed the first dude after he started dancing with some kids. After each murder he says "This is America ". There are several fires in the background. Oh and the end multiple meanings. The dark transition is like the sunken place in GET OUT! Also if he's the depiction of america hes running from the problems of the undeserved. If he's black no matter what perks his platform gives him he still faces the same struggle of minorities in this country. There's more I'm sure but those stood out to me.

So late with response but recently got hooked on this song again, also in the end when the camera pans up and we see him running,notice how there seems to be no way out, and like his woken up from this trans and is running but it seems to indicate they get him in the end , especially when you no longer want to live in that trans and speak out against all the injustice.
My thoughts on the video. This video was a perfect representation of America. The first showing was America/Gambino killing our culture which is the guy with the guitar. That's y the beat changed as soon as he died. The beat went from a kinda African dance style beat to a modern rap beat that exist in America. The choir getting shot up represents the church massacare.That I believe that happened last year.
Lastly, Gambino dancing was a perfect mask to what was going on In the background. While u was watching him dance u don't notice all the chaos in the background. That's kinda showing how we don't pay attention to all the fucked up shit that's happening in America because it's always something that distracts up from the real problems in America. It can be a new trend or even something deeper as a meaningless sport. THIS IS AMERICA !!!!!!!!!

This video has some deep deep meanings.
I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! It's rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him.
To me the high point of the video starts at 4:59, the shooting of the choir. The gun is wrapped and taken away carefully, pans to the empty police car (the presence of policing but no actual people) in front of the incident but couldn't do anything about it. Then the dance scene, and the adlib from offset, dope touch. And the main bit, the contraband, contraband", the white horse with the dark character, death, and how he pulls out a non existent gun, points it and everybody's running away, kinda symbolizes racial profiling and assuming gambino is dangerous to society wrongfully, and takes his weed to cope with the shit. Bruh, too much to dissect, props to gambino on this joint.
Biig mannnn, the choir scene is my fave for sooooo many reasons, but yes,,, that Usher/Chris Brown/MJ slide through the door was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

I noticed the cars are old with the hazards on and doors open. The choir is singing but absent, the guitar player is there but he has a bag on his head. I think the cars belong to all the victims, and the fact that they’re old is a statement about how long these things have been happening, meanwhile the choir representing black culture continues to sing about getting rich to get out of the situation when it’s clearly worthless advise, for such a futile paradigm.

It's interesting to me that, as a black guy, you don't immediately see the meaning of the final scene, where he is clearly running for his life from a mob. In some ways this is a good thing, that the days of slaves running to escape their owners, or of lynchings, is in the distant past. But all of this belongs when thinking about 'This is America' - same with the Jim Crow references. It's all part of the identity of America, past and present.

There’s several theories toward what he’s trying to portray in the video so here’s some of them: In the beginning when he shoot the man in the chair he does a pose that people think can be the Jim Crow law figure, some of his over the top facial expressions are from when African Americans worked in show biz in the 60s during segregation, the kids and Glover are dancing to distract the chaos going on as it’s blurred somewhat in the background, each time a shooting occurs one of the kids take it with a red cloth as the bodies are left there or dragged, the choir represents the choir shooting in North Carolina, the kids hold phones at one part as Glover says “It’s a Celly, that’s a tool” as they record the madness around them as it symbolizes that people do t take action but just record it and make the public view it, in the back theres a person dressed head to toe with black clothing riding a white horse that represents the the end of time, and lastly the end of the video people say can be from the movie “Get Out” as the main character in the movie...tbh idk this one that well but it’s related to “Get Out”. And yeah well that’s all ik.
