I’ll tell you a funny story, about 18 years ago we moved to the Isle of Skye, we came from a large town, flooded with light pollution. We knew nothing about the northern lights, nothing. One night, we were sat in our lounge & the sky suddenly went green & seemed to be moving towards us 😳 I have to say it seemed quite frightening at the time, we thought the Martians 👽 had landed 🤣🤣 Em 💜
Thank you for the iPhone hints! Please consider posting more of the photos you got - for some of us it’s the only way we will ever see the Aurora! Love you guys ❤.
That was fascinating, you are always so clear in everything you tell us. (Wish you'd been my teacher at school, think I'd have learnt so much more.) The Aurora footage was awesome in fact I'm going to watch your video again. Thanks Colin, and Hi Shaun xx 💕🐾
Thank you very much for sharing your tips., it is a typically kind and generous thing from you. ❤ We have a red alert on Aurora Watch even here in the south so hope that the clouds go and it appears!
I've witnessed a solar eclipse in Tennessee, a stunning meteor shower in a dark sky location in central Washington and a month of 24 hour daylight in Alaska but have never been under the aurora. After reading Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" books long ago (and watching the recent TV adaptation) this is one of the things that is at the top of my list. Thanks for sharing your images and how you captured them!
Thank you for this super session of how to take photos of the Northern Lights. I recently "discovered" the ISO setting on my 35mm and it helps. So envious.
Beautiful! Reminds me of the times when I was little standing in the front yard of our home with my parents in the upper peninsula of Michigan here in the USA watching them. This blog brought back some warm memories. Thanks guys. 👍🤗❤
Well done Colin, great shots, we might go out into the Forrest tonight if the sky's clear, too much light pollution where we are at home. Only you can get a smutty mention involved with such a science based subject, keep up the good work, thanks for sharing. Can we expect one of your photos in next years calendar?
Awesome show, nice job capturing them👍👍 I guess the aurora is 1 benefit to living at the north pole. I'm north enough to be miserable and cold but too far away to see them.😂😂 Thanks for updating the tips!
Those are some amazing shots - Thanks!! "Angry ball of angriness" - not sure I've ever heard Neil deGrasse Tyson ever quite describe the sun that way, but it works :)
Thank you so very much for this video. I saw the Aurora for the first time yesterday, and i'm so happy! I live in Denmark, so there is a fair chance from time to time, but I'm sat in the middle of a city (suburbia, not big city.) So far i haven't had any luck, it's either been too faint for me to see through the light pollution, or i've been out at the wrong time, or its been cloudy as our weather over here is about as good as what you get in Britain. Then i saw a notice about aurora yesterday evening, so i kept an eye out for clear skies, and late last night i was in luck! It was so amazing, started as a faint haze that made me suspicious when i was taking out the trashbags. So i dashed inside to get my phone, and sure enough, through the night settings on my camera, the skies exploded with vibrant green swirls. Stood there for a while, and it just got wilder and wilder! Soon the greens were visible to the naked eye, and then big blotches of red appeared all across the sky, clearly visible to the naked eye. I snapped a bunch of decent pictures with my phone, using our bins to rest my elbows. I also gave my neighbour a heart attack as he was coming out of his house when standing behind the houses so still that the motion sensors didn't go off. So now i want to have my old canon eos ready to pull out if i am this lucky again. The pictures on my phone are ok, but i want to make something even better. I needed some quick tips for a newbie who hasn't used her canon camera in about 8 years, as the phone is always nearby and not as heavy to drag along on trips. Didn't need a 50 minute deep dive into the ethics of using this or that iso setting. You delivered precisely the info i needed. 👏👏
Going to Svalbard next week hopefully for the Northern Lights so this info was well timed😁. Thanks for the info, it more or less confirmed what I thought.
Is it Friday already oh silly me it's Monday 🤣 like the different colours of the northern lights you guys have picked the perfect place to live up in Scotland
Did you have any luck spotting it? Apparently it was an absolutely massive solar storm. Its the first time i've been lucky enough to see it, as i'm in a city, so i usually have too much light around to get a look at it.
They were glowing here in the Yukon in northern Canada for much of the night. Swirls and streaks of all colours... especially red, purple, green. Magnificent display and I've lived across northern Canada for over 35 years! Our local social media was full of tons of amazing photos! Only difference is it was -30 here. Brrr.
WOW! Those reds! Fantastic job. I grew up far enough north to have seen several ABs, but never reds like what you two photographed. Two most unusual times for me were once in the Philippines in 90 or 91, and one of the times from my home. The Philippines because it was so far south. The one from my home because it looked like a waterfall coming from the moon and the rest of the sky was covered in ribbons.
loved all your videos from the beginning- but as a photography fan - this is my favourite. This is on my bucket list and now I have target settings 🎉🎉 Unfortunately too far south in HK, but it's on my travel plans!
I have never left you guys a comment before but thought I should tell you how much I enjoy your channel. I am going through your old shows to make sure I have not missed any. Your new format of living in the highlands is great. Keep up the good work. I know you want to keep things private but we would enjoy learning a little more of your past history. Just nosey I guess. Good luck to both of you.
I have been so lucky to see the aurora in Iceland last year, it's the most beautiful natural event I have ever seen, I need to rent a cabin somewhere north for a month haha. Does the aurora happens normally in north Scotland? or it's visible just when it's really strong?
That was really interesting and useful. Thank you. Not sure we will get much in the way of aurora borealis down here in Sussex - hour photos are awesome.
Great advice! Have fun, you can't break your camera taking photos. Bracketing a picture is a great way to ensure success. Bracketing - (adjusting speed, F stops, and Iso high and low) many cameras have settings to bracket automatically. Loving the Aurora pics!
Wow what a great video on how to capture the AB! Thanks for taking the time to explain how to do it and the tips. The photos and videos were fabulous. You have a creative mind that is wonderful .
We're coming upto Scotland at the end of October and the place we're staying regularly take photos, so with my camera, I'm going to use your setting, so if we're lucky enough to see then, I might get to see this light show with my own eyes, thanks fellas😊
Great Shot Guys, apprently the Northern Lights could be seen from Bury St Edmunds, Mid Suffolk, Soooo.. I'm Gonna get my Mini 3 Pro in the air, weather permitting, if the wind is good, then I'll take it to the maximum 120m (400ft) wish me luck 😉👍

Hi guys!! Thanks for explaining how the aurora borealis appears. I loved seeing your photos.
Thanks for the northern lights. We use to watch them when I was a kid.God bless you both. I really appreciate you both. God bless.
Excellent homework fellas! Who said you don’t know much…….triple experts in my book. Stupendous pics, just saved me buying a useless cruise up north.
Absolutely beautiful! and the lights weren't bad either. :)
Beautiful photographs. When I have been in Scotland in the past I have seen the Aurora many times but it never ceases to amaze and impress me. James.
Thank you for the iPhone hints! Please consider posting more of the photos you got - for some of us it’s the only way we will ever see the Aurora! Love you guys ❤.

Thank you for such an informative and useful edition. Definitely inspired to take some night time photos. 👏👏👍😀
Thank you for this. I watched your video right before I photographed the Aurora Borealis last week. I uploaded a video slideshow to my channel.
Thank you so very much for this video.

Wow, breathtaking beauty.
When I lived in norther norway (70 deg N), I just layed down in the snow and could watch for hours despite -30 C
I love the effort, research and attention to detail in these videos.
Thank you very much!

You deserve so much credit for your excellent research for your videos. 😘😘
Thank you so much!
Great pics. Would have thought that Achavanich Standing Stones would be a great spot for a moody pic.

fantastic
Colin, you may not be a professional photographer, but you certainly do have the knack for taking gorgeous photos.
Great video short & sweet
Thanks 👍
I have been so lucky to see the aurora in Iceland last year, it's the most beautiful natural event I have ever seen, I need to rent a cabin somewhere north for a month haha.

It can be seen fairly regularly but not usually this strong.

brilliant thank you\
You're very welcome
YAY!!!!
Great video again , well done colin.
Thanks 👍
Top Tips hey lads 👍👍👍
Great idea guys, same Nikon as me :)
The lights are 100 miles high so 400feet won’t make much difference. Plus, the slight movement of the drone will give blurry photos/video 👍🏻
