I missed this when you posted it on Christmas, because I didn't know about your channel until much more recently ... But I love this film, and when I saw yesterday that it was on your channel here, I bookmarked it to watch today, both to see the film again and to listen to your introductory comments. I loved hearing how much you love this film ... And I very much appreciate your efforts with the subtitles! Thank you for that! (I am not completely ignorant of French, but ignorant enough that I needed the subtitles.) The only additional comment i want to make is that I also love that at the end, she does not say, "I won't be afraid with you", but rather "I don't mind being afraid with you" ... I feel that there is much more love in that line. Such a beautiful film! Thanks for sharing it with your introduction so loving of the movie! Oh, and one more thing ... I noticed that "Janus films" or played a role in this film ... so it feels appropriate that I watch it on the last day of Janus' month shortly after hearing from a friend who told me of how January was a significant month for her because of its relation to Janus who looks backwards and forwards at the same time.

To see this filmed version of "Beauty and the Beast" in French language. The original origin of this classic fairytale story makes me fall more for this wonderful love story. ❤
Wonderful film, thank you very much for presenting this great black and white film to me or others who yet have not see it or know this movie classic 🙏❤

  • @themysteriousdomainmoviepalace

Merry Christmas everyone! This one is later than I'd hoped because this is a French film and needs subtitles. The subtitles wouldn't embed in the video. I was thinking I'd have to offer a different film, but then I found the scriot in English online! So, I had to add them line by line in my editor. It was a long tedious job and the subtitles are uneven because I had to learn as I went and there was no way to change the font size in the beginning of the film to have consistency, I wanted it up Christmas and now it is!
There will be another film this month, for Barbara Steele's birthday! I hope you come back for that! ❤❤❤

On my "must see" list since boyhood, yet criminally I never got round to seeing it and never chanced upon it, so I came straight here when it popped up among my suggestions. And it's indeed a masterpiece of what remains my favourite period of cinema, roughly 1944-47 (and on into the 1950s) when the creativity pent up by wartime seemed to burst out in a torrent.
One thing that strikes me is that this just couldn't have been done in colour, as with so much from the period: Cocteau would have come up with an exquisitely-realised fantasy, no doubt, but much of the darkness would have been lost. You really need blank-and-white for some things, and it's understandably hard to pull that off now when it's a choice rather than a natural expression of the conditions of the time (colour was available by then, but budgets were necessarily limited).
The camerawork is inspired: others were experimenting with novel approaches to filming, but here Cocteau's well ahead of the curve: Powell seems his only peer). Fantasy staging was almost as old as cinema itself, but again the design's state-of-the-art. An excellent pick, and somehow it manages to suit xmas without having anything to do with it, like most good xmas movies!

I agree with everything you said. The period between the world wars was incredible with so much variety. It also remarkable how with such primitive equiptment, Cocteau was able to make his forest scenes look like Gustave Dore engravings. Amazing!

@themysteriousdomainmoviepalace Yes, I think those resource limitations helped drive the creativity, whereas the fruits of today's 8- and 9--figure megabudgets tend to leave me cold. This was from the heart.

This was a wonderful Christmas gift ! I loved this film since I was a little girl.We would only see it when it was shown on PBS channel 13 back in the 60's. I knew back then that this was a "Special" film. I was always amazed at the Human hands on the walls holding the candle torches.I now own this on DVD, but part of the Magic was waiting every year to watch it on our BLk/Wht TV ! Another movie I also love is "Donkey Skin"Peau dAne" also a French film directed byJacques Demy,Starring Catherine Deneuve, and Jean Marais.1970. Music by Michel Legrand. The "hallway" scene in Cocteau's film --- assume you're alluding to the sequence where hands & arms are protruding from the walls and holding candelabra --- might in turn have been influenced by Fitz-James O'Brien's surrealistic story, "From Hand to Mouth" (1858). I'm not sure Cocteau had read the story (since I'm not sure he'd gotten hold of O'Brien's tale, either in the original English or in French translation), but it seems to me the resemblance, while not identical, is too close to be coincidental.

One of my favorite films. I first saw this about fifty years ago, with my then fiancé, now wife. At the time I was fascinated by the fantasy the film portrayed. The animated wall sculptures, wall sconces, etc. The actress that portrayed Bell was a stunningly beautiful woman. The beast's makeup and costume are better than any I have seen in remakes of Beauty and the Beast.

I cannot describe the poetic beauty of La Bell et La Bete.. the imagery, the moving heads and arms in the castle, the beauty of this transcends our fears. I saw this in early 1980's, I was going to foreign film fests galore in San Diego. As a former actor, I immersed myself in all things theatrical, especially foreign film...La Belle et La Bete draws one in and never let's go...It is what we all inwardly crave to be able to see beauty when confronted by the beast. The sets were otherworldly, the lighting was perfect. the acting was sublime and just right. Utterly fascinating. The beginning having the principals erase their names on the chalkboard was brilliant. My soul has been quenched. 🎭 p.s. Jean Marais and myself share the same birthday!

An urban legend I've read various places online. At the conclusion of the 1946 premiere, the famous actress cries out... some say Greta Garbo, some say Marlene Dietrich..."What have you done with my Beast?" Or words to that effect.
Have further read that this was Cocteau's intent...to make the Beast more compelling than the human prince.

Your comment has inspired this further thought.
Cocteau has in essence inverted a trope, to put it in the modern phrasing.
The usual expectation is that when the protagonist is delivered from his curse, the listener / watcher will see it as a desirable occurrence. But in this case a portion of the audience is conflicted.
Certainly none of the readers of the original novel would've rejoiced to see the Beast remain a Beast. It would be like main character remaining in poverty or even debtors' prison in a Charles Dickens novel. Yet more than a few viewers of Cocteau's movie (seem to) regret the Beast's transformation into the Prince.
And I further notice, if I may segue into another movie, Cocteau has been much more fortunate...or skillful...at retaining the audience's goodwill than another director who went a long way to make his movie (The Last Jedi)"subvert" expectations...Rian Johnson.

I love your channel! Almost ALL of your films/shows are right up my twisted, dark passageway! My favorite film of all time is Jean Cocteau's 1946 "The Beauty and The Beast", and I'd like to share a creepy-cool incident, which I don't think is anything but pure chance, but makes for a good story (like the ones you tell). I was living with my mom in Janesville, Wisconsin, for a few months, in the mid-1990s, while my husband and I were separated. My two sons were 3 and 1 years of age, and I worked weekends at a couple of local radio stations, in order to keep my sanity & get out of the house once in a while. I also frequented the local Blockbuster video rental store, mostly to rent cartoons for the boys, but if I had the time & money & cooperative kids, I sometimes rewarded myself with a REAL MOVIE, just for ME. I stumbled across the 1946 "The Beauty and The Beast" in the CHILDREN's video section, and I knew at a glance that I'd enjoy it, if nothing else but for the historical value alone - a girl needs an education, ya know. So I rented it & watched it late one night, after getting my baby to fall asleep in his swing in the living room. I popped the video cassette in the VCR, and since it had subtitles, I could keep the volume low, without waking anyone up. Oh my SWEET, SWEET SOUL! I was in love from the very first scene! I loved it so much, that I would rent it over & over (LATE FEES BE DAMNED)! Now here's where it gets interesting...
I went to Blockbuster after work one Sunday evening, to get the kids some videos, and to, of course, rent out my new favorite film, again. But it wasn't in its usual spot/area, and I was fairly sure that I was the only customer who ever rented it, so, naturally, I had to ask the clerk about it. She informed me that it probably had been removed along with many other titles that weren't popular enough to make a profit. I went into panic mode, and I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. I felt like a kid who just found out that her new cat had just been flattened by a speeding car. I somehow remained composed enough to USE MY VOICE to inquire WHERE ALL THE REMOVED TAPES WERE, NOW. She explained that they were in a storage room, awaiting processing, as they would be sold soon for cheap, to get rid of them. If they didn't sell, they'd be trashed. I explained my desire to buy the video, but she told me that the only problem was that she'd never be able to find it in there, as nothing had been sorted out into any categories or anything, there were just hundreds of video cassettes in piles, in stacks, in boxes... and she couldn't afford the time to help me look for it. I begged. I somehow got her to let me in to that storage room, in order to show me just how much of a disaster area it was. She was right. At first glance, it looked really hopeless. She was just ushering me back into the main part of the store, and, something caught my eye, as she was closing the door behind us. MY HOLY GRAIL OF ALL MOVIES WAS SITTING RIGHT ON TOP OF A STACK OF TAPES ABOUT 5 FEET HIGH! I pointed to it. BUT, she said, it's probably not actually inside of the decorated box we were looking at, as employees hadn't matched the boxes with the corresponding tapes. She saw my face fall, and must've felt sorry for me, because then she gingerly made her way over to the gorgeous silver & black-coloured box of my dreams... she picked it up, and, to our surprise, the tape WAS in the box.
She was speechless, and I just kept repeating THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I paid $10 for it. I still have it, along with a copy on DVD, and a small movie poster I got on Amazon.
You have my express, written permission to re-tell my story to anyone who gives a rat's ass! I also feel the need to thank you for the Gemini Gentlemen you featured last month - I'm proud to be a Gemini, too. I tell people that I'm a TRUE Gemini, as I'm right on the cusp, so sometimes I'm actually a Taurus. Keep up the good work, lady! I'm appreciating everything you share here - like the one I watched today, where you featured the 1970s British series "Supernatural". I actually have to watch the end, as I got caught up in writing this way-too-long note. STAY SPOOKY & COOL!

A wonderful and enchanting film. Belle is beautiful and her sisters are jealous of her, but it's really her inner beauty, her kindness, and compassion that is the source of her beauty. Adelaide and Felicie are selfish and scheming, and only interested in status and wealth. Love, compassion, and courage are where Belle's beauty really comes from. It must have taken great courage to take the place of her father, to travel into the forest and face the Beast for the first time.

Well, I think it's perfect. I don't know if anyone has made a film of the original story. Do you know one?

I paid a buck fity 40 years ago at the Varsity Theatre on the Drag in Austin Texas to see this movie on the single screen! Stunning, the Romantic style to me set the story in motion for all others to follow!
Now for a remake of, “Moontide”?

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful restoration of one of world cinema’s real treasures with us. I’ve loved the movie for years, but I’d never seen a print half as gorgeous. I’m sincerely grateful.

You know this movie is going to be enchanting when you hear music from “Swan Lake” right off the bat. This is my favorite “spooky” movie. Atmospheric and unsettling.

    Ça, c'est vrai...
I had a European DVD of this (they run the PAL video system ~ USA runs the NTSC (whatever: different fps); i have a screenshot of le Magnificent that gets used on FB or Twitter "de temps en temps" (from time to time).

Adding: I am intrigued by not the similarities, but the "overlap" with Cinderella: two bitchy social-climbing sisters, very harshly treating their sister "the domestic"... and her transformation ❤
