Snyder literally just used the panels from the graphic novel as his story. 300 and Watchmen is just the scenes in the books on screen hence why their his best, because he had nothing to do with the writing. The only glaring difference between this and the comic is Ozymandious being the big bad that gets the US and Russia to not nuke the world instead of a squid monster… probably the right choice

The Rorschach test is a phycology test where you are shown ink blotches, and you are supposed to tell them what you think you see. Hence the moving ink blotches on Rorschach Mask.

    • @Tomcat088
      @Tomcat088 Рік тому +2

@P-M-869 is correct. This is an older psychology technique to try to use to get some frame of reference for the psyche of some patients. His mask is a constant Rorschach ink blot and changes with his moods. He is a VERY VERY intelligent person and he is purposefully feeding the psychologist/psychiatrist the answers that he knows he should hear for a more serene, common, mundane answer. There is never a right or wrong answer, it’s just supposed to be a slight impression into any bias, experience, creativity, visual cues, trauma, etc. that someone uses to processes some ink on a paper that may seem to be more depending on how we process it. It’s obviously triggering other visions to him. Depending on the evaluators ability, he may know that he’s being mocked, or he completely buy in to the misdirection.

And Snyder romanticizes what the graphic novel deconstructs and whitewashes Rorschach to turn him into a Batman 2.0 that kills. What's more by changing the character and having Dreiberg scream in terror at the sight of his death and on top of that the next scene when he grabs Adrian and starts to tell him how he's mutilated mankind yadda yadda(all this doesn't happen in the graphic novel) Snyder makes clear what posture he thinks the audience should take rather than allow the ambiguity of the graphic novel. So glad you got to react to this one, girls. The story of Watchmen is an absolute masterpiece. Needless to say there is so much to unpack here but to cover the main story of it all, Adrian used Dr. Manhattan’s energy signatures to power the nuclear attacks on the world so that it would look like he caused them & everyone in the world could finally unite as one and stop the global conflicts all around. Like Adrian himself said, “kill millions in order to save billions.”
I also am really glad you both developed a soft spot for Rorschach throughout the film. He really is one of the most iconic comic book characters of them all but is heavily maligned because he is a stone cold killer, but as you saw in the film, he believes that there is no other way to truly uphold justice than to eradicate all crime with the same amount of energy & intent it began with.

In this fictional timeline, America wins the proxy wars like the one in Vietnam with the help of Dr. Manhatten. United States Of America vs. The Soviet Union aka Russia. Nuclear Destruction becomes a for sure thing in this timeline and the doomsday clock is counting down. Adrian (Osymandias) stops these 2 superpowers armed with nuclear weapons and prevents them from destroying each other and the whole world by creating a mutual enemy in Dr. Manhatten. Peace is achieved and mankind annihilation is prevented through this lie. Shit is crazy.

Having lived through the times when a president said about crimes during his administration "if the president does it, then it's legal"
It's understandable that in a universe where he won the Vietnam war with the assistance of Dr. Manhattan, he would become so popular that no one would have dared to question his actions, no matter how corrupt, and Kissinger was a hard liner, who favored the US waging wars in representation of the capitalism vs. communism all over the world.

@gabrielp9646 To anyone in the demographic at the time it came out, rorschach was not a villain. The pro commie crap was to set the scene, no one was pro commie 40 yeas ago. It was anti authority, anti government, anti war. It was pro liberal talking points to show the parody of what was happening a world away no one cared about cause muh guns. And the public needed to be like that to a degree to spawn a need for heroes. The whole point is there was a bad guy with a gun around every corner. Cities were degenerate cesspools but still somehow you could raise a family. Not true of today. People shooting up schools and mass shootings are a recent thing. Life is becomming more like the comic than not and that's the point of the comic. And stats being changed to impose a narrative so everything is a mass shooting now instead of gang bangers doing gang banger crap plays right into the authority controlling the narrative that the comic was putting a spot light on. Who watches the watchmen means whose perspective counts and whose doesn't? And in the strongest way possible Alan Moore shows you that the authority's perspective should be disregarded in almost every single instance.

This is based on the famous comic book by Alan Moore, which is probably one of the most influential comics in the last 50 years. I HIGHLY recommend that you get a copy and read it, because there is SO much more in the book than in the film. For the sake of time limits, they had to cut a lot of background info and sub-plots out of the movie, which is fair enough (and probably the only way it could have been made at all), but they make the book vastly richer and re-readable. The level of detail in some of the panels is insane and the way in which what looks like minor background detail turns out to be the plot coming back around through the same scene 100 pages later is just mind-blowing.

It's not simplistic or too didactic. While it could have just been a mere attack on power, it actually shows the incredibly tough decisions that come with power.
It reminds me of all the big 'enlightenment period' questions and ideas we learned about in my sociology degree, such as how much freedom is best, the value of life, what values are objective etc. Above all, whether negative means justify positive ends and whether it's ok to be live happily under a lie.

A politician and a policeman are regular people with "extra powers." They're above the law because we want someone ELSE to "help save the world," instead of being better people and doing it ourselves.
Do people love and admire mayors and policemen, like they do Superman and Wonder Woman? It's the opposite. We treat them like: Watchmen. We let them do authoratative things for awhile, we let them wear a snazzy uniform with flashy parts, then we get angry at them as a mob and throw things at them, hobble them with new laws, and finally try to lock them up and force them out, away from regular people,. Then, when things go south, we call them back to work, rather than do something ourselves. Stop crime in my neighborhood? Cant. Gotta work tomorrow. Netflix. My kid is sick. My dog needs walking.
Watchmen exposes how humans treat other humans with power, showing how power corrupts (1)those who have it, (2)those who dont, and (3) those who want it. And when someone DOESNT get corrupted.....they get blown apart, like Rorschach

iirc superheroes were outlawed. That is why they don't go out to save ppl. That's why they said "want to go out and do something stupid". It's illegal to go out as superheroes, so going out as superheroes is stupid. They will get locked up like Rorschach.
Those two are not like The Boys. They genuinely like helping ppl. They are just not legally allowed to help ppl. The closest character to The Boys would be the Comedian but even he is more complicated of a charater than most of the Boys' two dimensional characters (I am going off of the first two season of the Boys. I didn't watch beyond the second season).

This is an adaptation of Alan Moore's comic. Very poor adaptation that while visually adapting the panels of the comic completely undermines itself by missing the point of the themes the story actually explores and turning Rorsasch (who's a far right wing, misogynistic, homophobic racist) into Batman 2.0 and turning a story of heavily flawed individuals who dress weird and fight crime not out of a sense of justice but because they can't cope with their own flaws and traumas into a cool action movie with superheros joining forces to save the world.

Watchmen is the best comic book movie that's also a top tier movie. The only other one that comes close or better is V for vendetta. As for regular old comic book movies, the best is either blade or dredd 2012. It would be the dark knight if not for it being a part of a trilogy that overall wasn't that great.

Seriously..?? This is one of the worst comicbook adaptations of all time. It completely misses all the meaning and lessons behind the original... Turns VILLAIN characters like Rorschach into cool misunderstood heroes.. And the worst part is that I don´t think Snyder even realizes he did this. I think he legitimately tried to adapt this literally, but just didn´t understand the original comic 😅😅

The trouble is Ozymandias is wrong, people can be united, the existence of nations, communities, religions prove that. But people will always find causes, excuses and rationales for conflict, they will invent them. His effort would only be a tourniquet, a temporary solution. And even more, the truth will always be found out.

What would you do if it was you who found Rorshach's diary? I'd read it and burn it. The search for truth may be the noblest of human activities but is not worth World War III and the total human extintion. Wars start with lies, why can't peace if it works?
Also, the reason Ozzy is so strong is because he is fast, the kinetic energy is calculated as 1/2 m*(v^2) if you go faster you punch with more energy because it grows exponentially.

" You don't seem to understand, I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me"
    9/10
    10 years later
Some time after "The Boys" I decided to give this film a rematch... Back in 2009 it was still a time when there was not that many similar to each other superhero films Watchmen cam out a bit too early..., What makes Watchmen feeling so fresh in 2020 is that it's completely different to most of Marvel films.... The characters in Watchmen feel more like real people than idealistic figures you usually get - they age, they change opinions on things, they do wrong things... The world is also much more similar to ours in 2020 that it was in 2009... Brilliant film 9/10!
