I love the Silver Minnow. When I started for bass many many years ago I used the Silver Minnow, Rapala F13, and a curly tail grub.
Title should be "The WORST ANGLER throwing a Johnson Spoon into Lily Pads". I;ve never seen someone put a trick worm on the back of a spoon like that or use that kind of palsy retrieve
Watch my other videos. You might change your mind lol
I can’t believe you didn’t think it would work😂
Used to be super common, and is still used for bass and pike.
Haha I knew it would but I just remembered throwing it as a kid and never caught a thing! Lol
It’s got better action if you put the pork frog on it. The drag put on the spoon by the pork makes it wobble and not tumble. Basically it has a chatterbait action. In Florida, the gold spoon is a staple for catching giant redfish and trout. Been a while since I’ve used one for bass but it is definitely a fish catcher.
I definitely will have to order some pork chunks
First of all your retrieve is to fast, slow down and allow the spoon to sink and then slow roll it as close to the bottom as possible, that’s when the strikes occur…It works for me all the time!
Kevin, you can actually let that lure flutter down along the edge of the pads on a tight line. Also get some feathers tied on the hook.
Thanks. I will give that a try
Definitely try a shorter plastic and you can skate it on top and they'll blow up on it.
i was using that bait 60 years ago i put a piece of uncle josh pork rind on the back
Man you need to be going before daylight and do a early morning topwater video heck with this heat
I know it!!! I had to get some work done before I couod go out
The old school spoon was always fished with a double tail grub on the back and fished almost like a buzz bait on top of the water
It does catch fish!! We always put an Uncle Josh pork strip on the back. That was years ago and I never caught anything!! I made it happen on this day though!
I remember using them back in the 70's and 80's with a uncle josh pork strip! The 1st time I tried one, I had lost my weed walker (plastic spoon with a metal paddle wheel) on a big fish. I put on a silver minnow because it was the only other lure I had that could be thrown in the pads without getting snagged. I didn't think it was going to work, but the 1st cast with it, and I caught a 5lb bass that still had my weed walker in its mouth! I'll never forget that....FishOn....Jim
Thats pretty awesome!! Im going to have to look that weed walker up!
Dude that’s a cool story
Fish the hell out of that lure on the early 70s.
I’ve never seen anyone fish bass with them. They work phenomenal on red fish!
Hmmm.....thats good to know!
Have caught so many bass on this bait. Also, the black silver minnow on dark or overcast days. Like others have said, double tails or just a bit shorter tails work best. A must is letting it flutter down after clearing the pads, grass, or structure.
I am definitely going to give it another try
About 30 years ago on a fly in fishing trip at a Canadian lake about 110 air miles NW of Red Lake Ontario my fishing partner and I found a huge area of the lake with eal grass(?) and cattails in it turns out it was absolutely overrun with Minnows and also with 5-10 pound northern pike feeding on the Minnows only luer we had we could fish in the cover without getting hung up immediately were 1/2oz Johnson Silver Minnows
Only reason we had them was the owner of the outfitting operation that had fishing rights to the lakes we flew into told us we EACH absolutely MUST have 3 or 4 Johnson Silver Minnows as these lakes had alot of reeds in them full of pike
We tipped them with 4" Mister Twister curly tail grubs in chartreuse and had some of the best fishing of our lives
I did a lot of fishing that area by myself as everyone else wanted to chase walleyes which took work as we had no electronics with
But there were so many pike in the reeds you just put on your polarized sunglasses spotted them sitting or swimming in the reeds cast to them and watch as they cased caught ate your JSM and you set the hook.
That was over 30 years ago and never had better time fishing in my life
It was like fishing for bedded bluegills except each one of these fish weighed 10-20× more than a bluegill
I hated when our last day dawned.
Sounds like an awesome trip!
Dude why you skeptical? Like sheesh think about it from the perspective of basic economics. How would a lure that’s as big a POS as you seemed to think this was survive the marketplace for as long as you said it has? If it sucked so badly no one would produce it. I’d say the fact that it was invented over 100 yrs ago and is still around tells me it IS the cream of the crop?
I knew it would and has caught plenty of fish through the years. I was basically speaking of my thoughts from throwing it as a kid....I hadnt thrown one in 30 years, so I had to give my honest thoughts during the video. I appreciate your comment
Johnson Silver minnow with a white 3" Berkeley curly tail power grub & HOLD ON! Been using it for 40 years.
It definitely won't be the last time I.sling this thing around!
I cant remember every trying one bass fishing, but I have probably caught a thousand redfish on Johnson Spoons
Ive gotten several comments saying they crush the redfish!
The two lures that were my go to's for pullin bass out of heavy lilly pads are the Johnson Silver Minnow and the Bill Plumers Super Frog I've caught under all conditions all year long with both lures with and without trailers or stinger hooks since I got serious about bass fishin back in the mid sixtys
I'll still use the Silver Minnow occasionally but the new Super Frog isn't the same action as the original ones I still have two originals but am too afraid of losing them to use one very often I do use the new type modern top water frogs plenty
I actually have a few original Bill Plumer super frogs that were my dads. I will never throw them but just keep them with my other old lures
That was and still is a Roland Martin staple. I also used to throw it a bit in the 80’s with a pork rind trailer. A split tail spinnerbait trailer works great as well.
The ol pork strip was the deal!!
@@GunnFishTV yes sir!
Sharpen the hook and bend the hook point out a few degrees, put a short trailer grub or section of a ribbon tail worm and you be surprised what you end up catching. I was surprised what I caught on a gold colored Johnson Silver Minnow with a white grub on it. You have to sharpen hook though.
I appreciate the advice. Once I bent the hook out (before the last 3 fish) my hookups definitely were better
Am I the only person thinking, let it drop under the pads and slow roll it like a chatterbait? IDK, ive never fished with a spoon.
Most of the pads were to thick for that but aim going to ise it again when I have more time. I think I can crack them on it!
It's a great lure, you caught fish without even fishing it right. If you fished it on top of the pads ossasionaly letting it drop you would have doubled your catch. You need a rod with a soft tip and mono so your not pulling it out of the fishes mouth. Use a zoom white salty chunk and dip the legs in garlic spike it dye. If I miss a fish on a frog I fire the spoon in there and usually catch the fish
I appreciate the tips!! I definitely plan to use it again
I saw a video of a guy using a 18mm wrench and a hook catch a big fish in the ocean. So don’t laugh at the spoon.
The spoon will catch a fish until the end of time!
Yup. It works but only if you let it. The key to fishing the lure (like the other guys, I've caught tons of bass, pike and redfish on the Silver Minnow) is letting it flutter and slowing it down. Pads, reeds and edges are the spots to work, just like all the "new" baits. Nothing new there, isn't that where the fish are? The standard trailer was a frog chunk with the split tail or the Uncle Josh split tail in white. One more thing: maybe more fishing and less talking...slow down!!!
I only had 2 hours to fish on this particular day. I talk to try to explain what I am doing, etc. I invite you to check out some of my other cideos where its less talking and more catching!
Understand completely and please don't take my comments as negative. I clearly understand you and your colleagues are under pressure by sponsors (and others) to crank out videos. "Speed fishing" is tough for anyone!!
Twin tail Mr Twister is killer with this bait. It was the go to bait when Back Bay was in its hay day in the 80s.
I need to get back out there!! My Dad told me about Back Bay in 80s. He said it was awesome and would throw a broken back Rebel in the holes between the Hydrilla
Don’t discount the old school stuff, fish haven’t seen them in years
Your exactly right. Probably will throw it some more soon
Put a 2 inch Manns grub on it. Been a low key lure for me in a local lake in the pads.
I will give it a try
Spoons catch fish. They also caught a variety of species.
No doubt they catch em
Not much of a bass fisherman thinking a spoon cant catch fish.
I've caught giants on a spoon, just not this particular one. Which I hadn't thrown since I was 10 years old
It's 100 years old.. it's a classic. Very weedless.
Definitely came theough the pads well. Im going to throw it around some more and see if I can get a big one on it
I have caught tons of bass on a silver minnow.
It catches em!!
One of the great old ones. Fish it like a frog and no trailer.
It definitely catches em still
Kevin!!!Thanks for bringing back an old favorite. I used it back in the 1920's😜🤪
Nice
Do a rod and reel arsenal and show us what you use
I absolutely will 👌👌👌
i use to smash on it back in the 80s would put a white skirt on it i found a company up north a couple years ago and bought a few i also learned to use a swivel back then to cut down on line twist boy that spoon brings back memories.
I had pretty good luck with the silver minnow years ago. Always used a white twin tail culprit worm as a trailer.
Hey Kev! Use to put a single tail grub but try a white menace.
Awesome video Brother!! Keep up the awesome content dude!!
Throw it over hydrilla patches
Awesome video. I love fishing flutter spoons along the edge of submerged grasses so I bought a couple of the Johnson weedless spoons and never had any luck. I’ll try them again.
I would definitely try them again!
Hahah Kev, you always find great stuff to keep us entertain. I caught myself the other day saying "this bass smoooked it" hahaha it is your catch phrase in many videos.
Haha thats awesome man. Yea I love saying that!!
There is a video that Roland Martin put out where he cuts the weed guard and adds a longer worm which makes the spoon dynamite. The lure is still very weedless, and it's incredibly effective.
I think I have seen that before. Definitely going to give it a try
great video. You have great reflexes. That spoon was coming at you fast. LOL.
Haha it was close!
Super Glue a short or trimmed white Spinnerbait Skirt or a short white grub. Let it fall when you first cast it. then fish it like a swim jig. Bass hit it 50 Percent of the time on the initial fall. PS you were right to bend the hook out!!! I use to kill them on this in South FLA.
💪💪💪 heck yea. I appreciate the tip
Johnson silver minnow has been catching fish for many decades try putting a white skirt or a twin tail for a trailer people just get all wound up on the latest baits and forget about the old classics and that is a mistake . there's a reason why they still make them and they sell dont forget the classics.
💪💪💪💪 you got that right!
Almost forgot about that been a long time ago. The one we would use had this crazy feather on it. Did catch some on it. That was super cool heck yeah nice ones. Bring some more like that . Thanks again for another awesome video. Late.
Thanks Blake
Kev you gotta try one of the old Fred Abrogast Jitterbugs out there. (if you ever do another old school lure vid)
I will definitely do one
The key to that Johnson spoon is putting a swivel on the front, Try it makes it look better.
Thanks I will give that try
The gold spoon is a killer red fish bait here in South Louisiana that can't resist it
That's what several people have said. Thats awesome
Awesome video man 🔥🔥🎣🎣
First video I’ve seen of yours where you used just one rod/bait! Fun vid!
I am going to try to do it some more
Every time your wife calls, you catch one. Nice
Your exactly right, lol. I need her to talk to for a whole tournament!
Heddon Moss Boss is a floating design like that for tops of mats
I will take a look at that one
check out the Barney Spoons out of Akron Ohio
I will take a look
Enjoyed the video. I still have Johnson Silver minnows in my tackle box. Throw them on the Roanoke River occasionally. Next how about a jitterbug video.
I will do one for sure
It's still tough to beat a Jitterbug fished at night.
Great video! Old school still works.
💪💪💪 old school will always catch em!
Red drum and striper love those type of spoons
The flash will get em!
I use to use them for hickory shad
The smaller ones do work good for shad!!
Great video. Thanks
Thanks!
Probably need to open up the hook gap with pliers and use a hook file to sharpen the hook on the johnson spoon.
I opened it up before I caught the last 3. I definitely think it made a difference
@@GunnFishTV The hooks on those are notoriously dull as well.
It was junk. Next spot!
😂😂😂 JUNK
I guess ya'll done forgot about the Mepps Timberdoodle spoon?! That thing was made for lilly pads
I remember the Snagless Sally!! I think im going to try that next
fyi guys, what did we learn? never fish a silver minnow with that speed of a retrieve! this guy missed alot of fish, as he doesn't know how to fish the silver spoon...
You could have wrote this as an advice, all you have to say hi guys just an advice when you fish a silver minnow make sure it is with a slow retrieve, no need to be condescending or saying this guy. This guy has a name Kevin, and if you do not like what you see then do not watch. Seriously some people……
Sometimes when you learn what not to do, thats better than learning what to do!! Lol
